CHAPTER XX LITERARY LABOURS COUNT DE MONTALEMBERT ILLUSTRIOUS CORRESPONDENTS 1835-1875 We have seen how Phillipps de Lisle devoted his pen to promote two of the darling projects of his life, the restoration of Gregorian Chaunt in the worship of Almighty God, and the destruction of the Kingdom of Antichrist, whose hereditary representative he believed the Sultan of Turkey to be, the acknowledged head of the Mahommedan religion, that corruption of the Faith of Abraham, based upon the cruel supremacy of the sword and the slavish subjection of women. Of his endeavours to rehabilitate the claims of our National Gothic Architecture we have read something, although he never published any treatise upon this subject. He was satisfied to support and encourage his enthusiastic friend Augustus Welby Pugin. His other literary labours were mostly of a religious character, designed to promote the master passion of his soul, the restoration of the Church of England to Catholic unity, to peace and communion with the churches of the Continent and the Holy See. To appreciate the character of his writings is perhaps difficult to the ordinary Catholic as well as to the ordinary Protestant, who are both so little versed in each other's intellectual standpoints, although it is much easier now than it was in 1839, when De Lisle published his first great work, beautifully illustrated by artists of the Overbeck school, an exquisite, nervous translation of his chivalrous friend the Comte de Montalembert's Life of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. De Lisle's grand idea was to promote the sacred cause of Eeunion by exciting, kneading the Catholic or Orthodox leaven which still remained in the National Church until the Catholic leaven shall ferment and leaven the whole lump...

Book The Nile Campaign 1884 1885

Download or read book The Nile Campaign 1884 1885 written by Gerard de Lisle and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolph de Lisle RN entered Naval College in 1868 aged 13, and was only 31 when he died, ironically for a naval officer, in the Sudanese desert at the Battle of Abu Klea, 17 January 1885. An inveterate letter writer and talented artist, he consistently documented his eventful naval career as he traveled the world. His letters home were embellished with stunning sketches and watercolors. In August 1884, Rudolph was selected to join the Naval Brigade in the Gordon Relief Expedition led by General Sir Garnet Wolseley. His principal role was to help drag troop boats over the six cataracts that blocked their way up the Nile to Khartoum. Rudolph’s letters graphically describe this historic journey. We read of the struggles and ingenuity of the officers and men, the hardships and the daily dangers, and the shambolic, sometimes comic, chaos peculiar to the seemingly impossible task. His sketches, some of which were published in the Illustrated London News, vividly portray the challenges facing the Expedition. Gerard de Lisle, Rudolph's great nephew, has edited and compiled this superb collection, so that it can be appreciated by a wider audience and provide a fascinating insight into this famous yet too long overlooked military campaign. The result will appeal widely and particularly to art collectors and naval historians.

Book The Image of the Middle Ages in Romantic and Victorian Literature

Download or read book The Image of the Middle Ages in Romantic and Victorian Literature written by Kevin L. Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, The Image of the Middle Ages in Romantic and Victorian Literature looks at the impact of medievalism in the 18th and 19th centuries and the importance of post-Enlightenment literary religious medievalism. The book suggests that religious medievalism was not a superficial cultural phenomenon and that the romantic spirit with which it was chronologically connected, was intimately associated with the metaphysical. The book suggests that this belief gave birth to the metaphysical yearning and cultural expression of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The book seeks to clarify the post-Enlightenment relationship between aesthetic culture and ‘aesthetic’ religion, romanticism, medievalism and religious trends.

Book Newman s Early Roman Catholic Legacy 1845 1854

Download or read book Newman s Early Roman Catholic Legacy 1845 1854 written by C. Michael Shea and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, scholars have assumed that the genius of John Henry Newman remained underappreciated among his Roman Catholic contemporaries. In order to find the true impact of his work, one must therefore look to the century following his death. Newman's Early Roman Catholic Legacy, 1845-1854 unpicks this claim. Examining a host of overlooked evidence from England and the European continent, C. Michael Shea considers letters, records of conversations, and obscure and unpublished theological exchanges to show how Newman's 1845 Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine influenced a host of Catholic teachers, writers, and Church authorities in nineteenth-century Rome and beyond. Shea explores how these individuals employed Newman's theory of development to argue for the definability of the new dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary during the years preceding the doctrine's definition in 1854. This study traces how the theory of development became a factor in determining the very language that the Roman Catholic Church would use in referring to doctrinal change over time. In this way, Newman's Early Roman Catholic Legacy, 1845-1854 uncovers a key dimension of Newman's significance in modern religious history.
