Frederic Baraga" to the public, we hope that we are doing i service to religion, to the Church in the United States, and to our fellow-citizens in general. The subject of our narrative was a man of uncommon ability, learning, and piety. Ho distinguished himself as author of many works, written for his countrymen, for his Indian converts, and for linguistic scholars. As Indian missionary he was most wonderfully successful, having converted more Ottawas and Chippewas than any other priest the writer knows of. His converts were of the genuine kind, deeply religious, fervent, and well-behaved. If in the course of time some of them, or of their children, degenerated from their pristine fervor, it was not his fault, but the natural outcome of circumstances and environments, over which he could exercise no control, and which were detrimental to Indian moral advancement. Bishop Baraga has won the lasting love and respect of the people of the Northwest, among whom lie labored so long self-sacrifieingly. To perpetuate his memory unto future generations the remembrance of his life of labor, prayer, and suffering, is the object of this work. We are well aware of its many imperfections, but we have endeavored to give the reader a perfectly reliable account of Bishop Baraga's life and labors. We have generally let him tell his own story, as there is a peculiar charm in reading the accounts he gives us of his doings and happenings. It was 1831 when Father Frederic Baraga arrived in this country from his native Slovenia. He had come to bring Christianity to the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of the Old Northwest. Twenty years later, when Baraga first heard that he might be named Bishop of Upper Michigan, he began to keep a "daybook" or diary. Intended as a private document for his own use and reference, the diary contains a log of Baraga's missionary journeys, his observations about daily weather conditions, ship movement on the lakes, and a running account of the various works he accomplished. Between the lines of the usually concise entries, however, there are clues to Baraga's zeal, dedication, and generosity. Within these pages you will find an abridged biography of Venerable Bishop Baraga's life, a timeline of his journey toward sainthood and pictures of the Center, gardens and artifacts on display in the Museum. The biography is based largely upon Rev. Antoine Ivan Rezek's History of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette, Vol. I and the collection of letters and reports written by Bishop Baraga. Because the material quoted and paraphrased in the Biography come from sources written in the 19th and early 20th Century, the term "Indian" was used. Though some may view it as offensive today, we certainly have no wish to offend anyone. To convey the times with historical accuracy, we left the word as is and pray that it will be understood in the context of the times. We have great respect for the Native American people, the people Bishop Baraga loved. The Venerable Frederic Baraga was a complex man, but centrally, a man of deep faith. His love for the people in the Upper Great Lakes region - both the Native Americans and the European immigrants - sprang from his love for God and his deep desire to share his faith in Jesus Christ with others. Our desire, with the Bishop Baraga Educational Center, and with this book, is to con¬tinue Bishop Baraga's mission. The history of the Baraga House is an ongoing process that hopefully can be updated in the future. We also fervently pray that we'll be updating the timeline of the cause for sainthood very soon!If one wishes to delve deeper into the life of Venerable Bishop Baraga, most of the books listed in the bibliography can be found in the gift shop of the Bishop Baraga Educational Center and Museum.
