Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Deeds of Dr. Martin Luther Our times, on the other hand, are inundated with false human doctrines as with a flood. Nearly every year adds to the number of new religions. The major1ty fabricate their own religion, and many set forth their peculiar no tions and whims as new revelations, to say nothing of the fools who, in their satanlc ln fatuation, proclaim it as the highest wisdom to believe in no 'god at all. But what is sad dest of all 1s that so many, who 'still extol the Bible as the word of God, 111 so many points depart from it, and follow the false opinions of men in preference to the blessed and unchang able utterances of the God of truth. Of what avail are all these futile doctrines of men? They are vain cobwebs, and nothing more. Though they appear ever so beautiful and ingenlous, they are but shining bubbles which soon must burst. Wo to the unhappy mortals, who put their trust in them tempo i'a'l and eternal ru1n 1s their doom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Martin Luther Among the immortal names that have honored their kind and glorified their God, stands pre-eminently the name of Martin Luther. Yet not in name alone does his greatness shine forth in splendor after the lapse of four centuries, but in word and deed, in character and in uence. His private life and public career are a unit, for both were the manifestations of a sincere soul, a generous heart, a true man. The enlightened, civilized world celebrates the four hundredth anniversary of this great man's birth. He belongs to the world, to Church and State, for both have felt the in uence of his teachings. In the truest estimate of his God-given work he belongs to no sect or party, he is a man of and for the people. In what better way can the memorial of his birth be observed than by a study of his life, his character, and his works and above all, by a practical appreciation of the in uences which have proceeded from him and blessed mankind? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Martin Luther The biography of Luther is in truth a history of his age, so wide-spread were his connections, so universal was his influence. A wide examination2 of contemporary literature has shown that by 1526, three fourths of the quotations from the New Testament in German were from Luther's version. The Catholics paid it the sincere compliment of plagiarism for the rapidly executed version of Emser was but a light revision of his opponent's work. Only the Zwing lians for a time stood aloof. Surely, then, it is incumbent on us who have lighted the beacon of invitation to bid others come and enjoy with us liberty of person and conscience, to know him better. Nor is it only for this. The life of Luther is one for which we find no parallel in any history, and as such it is worth knowing. I have tried to view it from an impartial standpoint, to see him as a man among men, leaving polemics and the niceties of chronology to those who have tastes in that direction. J. H. T. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Luther by a Lutheran, or a Full Length Portrait of Doctor Martin Luther: Being a Comprehensive, Though Condensed and Correct History of the Life and Stupendous Achievements of the Great Reformer, From the Cradle to the Grave IN presenting the Life of Luther to the American public, it would seem to be proper to give a few reasons for such an um dertaking at this time. It may be asked and no doubt will be, have we not Lives of Luther in abundance? Why then add another to the list It is true we have d'aubigne, and Milner, and Scott, and Bowers, and Tischer, and a number of inferior works; but it is a remarkable fact, that we have not in the Eng lish language a single life of Luther, that pretends to give any thing like a correct and extensive account of the great Reform er, written by a Lutheran. And yet we humbly conceive that the gre atreformer ought to be fairly represented in English by a member of the church that bears his illustrious name. There are thousands and tens of thousands of as warm-hearted and whole-souled Lutherans in this country as ever lived, who are not able to read the rich and copious language of their fathers; and ought they not to be supplied with a correct and impartial life of the illustrious Reformer? Far be it from us to accuse those good and learned men of other churches who have writ ten the life of Luther, of doing him injustice, or intentionally misrepresenting him, but in most of such works we often see a parsimony of praise, which actually amounts to unintentional misrepresentation. This we have endeavored to correct in the following pages, and how well we may have succeeded, the ln telligent reader will be able to? Judge after a careful perusal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin Luther, Vol. 1: His Life and Work However unlike in respect of merit, this work on Luther has an affinity in class and kind with such books as Dr. Newman's Apologia and Mr. John Morley's Volfaire. These are personal histories; but the personal history - all the more bound to be true as a personal history on this account - serves for pre sentation of an important phase of belief, a notable chapter in spiritual evolution. Dr. Newman portrays and exemplifies one type of religion; and without question it is in these days a widely extended type. He accepts the Catholic Roman Church as the oracle of God, infallibly interpreting Scripture, and rendering credible doctrines, such as transubstantiation.
