Si las revistas científicas abrieron el camino consolidándose como paradigmas digitales irreversibles en el ámbito académico, los libros, tanto científicos como comerciales, después de varios años sujetos a movimientos de signo contradictorio, han iniciado un camino que se va afianzando progresivamente. El libro electrónico es una realidad cada vez más consistente en el ámbito editorial, en el que los movimientos de mercado aleccionan sobre los posicionamientos favorables a los mismos emprendidos por las industrias culturales en general, y por las empresas de generación de contenidos en particular. Lo que estos movimientos pergeñan es el fin del libro, en el sentido tradicional del término, y el nacimiento de nuevas formas de lectura. La aparición de la tinta electrónica, de dispositivos de lectura con niveles de legibilidad equiparables a los libros en papel, con capacidad para almacenar varios miles de libros, con conexión a Internet; el aumento de la oferta editorial digital; el éxito del iPad, con prestaciones que multiplican la lectura convencional, o el surgimiento de modelos de negocio nuevos como Google eBooks dibujan un panorama inexorablemente digital. El futuro está en la pantalla, pues esta puede recrear las características consustanciales a la literatura electrónica: la intertextualidad, en el sentido de creación múltiple y compartida, la interactividad y la yuxtaposición de formatos y medios. La desaparición del libro es también el nacimiento del libro y el comienzo de la escritura-lectura. Esta obra pretende analizar todos estos fenómenos y trazar un panorama que permita comprender el momento actual del libro electrónico y sus posibilidades futuras. José Antonio Cordón, profesor titular de la Universidad de Salamanca, miembro del Consejo Ejecutivo del Instituto de Historia del Libro y de la Lectura, ha publicado numerosos artículos y monografías sobre la industria editorial en general y el libro electrónico en particular.
