Book The Most Foreign Country

Download or read book The Most Foreign Country written by Alejandra Pizarnik and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Translated from the Spanish by Yvette Siegert. First published in 1955 and now translated for the first time into English, THE MOST FOREIGN COUNTRY is Alejandra Pizarnik's debut collection. Here, the nineteen-year-old poet begins to explore the themes that will shape and define her vision: the solitude of the poetic self, the longing for artistic depth, and the tenuous nearness of death. By turns probing and playful, bold and difficult, Pizarnik's earliest poems teem with an exuberant desire to grab hold of everything and to create a language that tests the limits of origin, paradox, and death.

Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2022 by The New Yorker “A tender and funny story about love, family and the peculiar position of being a stepparent…[Chilean Poet] broadens the author’s scope and quite likely his international reputation.” —Los Angeles Times “Zambra's books have long shown him to be a writer who, at the sentence level, is in a world all his own.” —Juan Vidal, NPR.org A writer of “startling talent” (The New York Times Book Review), Alejandro Zambra returns with his most substantial work yet: a story of fathers and sons, ambition and failure, and what it means to make a family After a chance encounter at a Santiago nightclub, aspiring poet Gonzalo reunites with his first love, Carla. Though their desire for each other is still intact, much has changed: among other things, Carla now has a six-year-old son, Vicente. Soon the three form a happy sort-of family—a stepfamily, though no such word exists in their language. Eventually, their ambitions pull the lovers in different directions—in Gonzalo’s case, all the way to New York. Though Gonzalo takes his books when he goes, still, Vicente inherits his ex-stepfather’s love of poetry. When, at eighteen, Vicente meets Pru, an American journalist literally and figuratively lost in Santiago, he encourages her to write about Chilean poets—not the famous, dead kind, your Nerudas or Mistrals or Bolaños, but rather the living, striving, everyday ones. Pru’s research leads her into this eccentric community—another kind of family, dysfunctional but ultimately loving. Will it also lead Vicente and Gonzalo back to each other? In Chilean Poet, Alejandro Zambra chronicles with enormous tenderness and insight the small moments—sexy, absurd, painful, sweet, profound—that make up our personal histories. Exploring how we choose our families and how we betray them, and what it means to be a man in relationships—a partner, father, stepfather, teacher, lover, writer, and friend—it is a bold and brilliant new work by one of the most important writers of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by Jesse Lee Kercheval Eight years before Sylvia Plath published Ariel, the Uruguayan poet Idea Vilariño released Poemas de Amor, a collection of confessional, passionate poetry dedicated to the novelist Juan Carlos Onetti. Both of her own merit and as part of the Uruguayan writers group the Generation of ’45—which included Onetti, Mario Benedetti, Amanda Berenguer, and Ida Vitale—Vilariño is an essential South American poet, and part of a long tradition of Uruguayan women poets. Vilariño and Onetti’s love affair is one of the most famous in South American literature. Poemas de Amor is an intense book, full of poems about sexuality and what it means to be a woman, and stands as a testament to both the necessity and the impossibility of love. This translation brings these highly personal poems to English speaking audiences for the first time side-by-side with the original Spanish language versions.

Download or read book Miami Century Fox written by Legna Rodríguez Iglesias and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Iglesias experiments with form while showcasing the philosophical and metaphorical possibilities of poetry in this winner of the 2016 National Poetry Series Paz Prize for Poetry. Faultlessly translated by Aparicio, the individual pieces in this book-length sequence of Petrarchan sonnets are each foregrounded by brief meditations, which often read as a commentary on the work's own movement through literary tradition...The experiment in form is a philosophical argument that poetry can contribute to what have traditionally been envisioned as purely scholarly conversations. Iglesias offers a vision of the subject as divided while showcasing the beauty inherent in this fracturing; the fragment is revealed as 'the key that will open the doors.'" --Publishers Weekly "Readers of this book, whether in Spanish, English, or both, can find something special in these snapshots of life's random moments...Hearing from a Latina woman that is unapologetically authentic and funny provides a much-needed healthy representation of our culture that helps to dispel the misconceptions. We are not criminals or bad hombres, we are lovers and dreamers and complex human beings, in Miami, and beyond." --White Wall Review "Miami Century Fox is Legna Rodríguez Iglesias's English debut, but by no means is she an emerging poet. Here's a voice that's seasoned and fierce, tender and sharp as a blade. I promise, dear readers, that you will not encounter another book quite like this, nor another poet quite like Legna Rodríguez Iglesias, ever again." --Achy Obejas, from the introduction "This smart, delightful, and seductive dual-language (Spanish and English) collection by the 2017 winner of the Paz Prize for Poetry is a loving and sly portrait of Miami and the immigrant experience in the 21st century." --Publishers Weekly, included in Fall 2017 Adult Announcements, Poetry A bilingual--English and Spanish--collection by the 2017 winner of the Paz Prize for Poetry, Miami Century Fox is a delightful, seductive read. Sonnets? Rhyme and meter? Yes, along with a delicious serving of irony and wit. This is one very smart collection of poems--a loving and sly portrait of Miami and the immigrant experience in the twenty-first century. Translated by Eduardo Aparicio. The Paz Prize for Poetry is presented by The National Poetry Series and The Center for Writing and Literature at Miami Dade College and is awarded biennially. Named in the spirit of the late Novel Prize--winning poet Octavio Paz, it honors a previously unpublished book of poetry written originally in Spanish by an American resident.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuscript Poetics explores the interrelationship between the material features of textual artifacts and the literary aspects of the medieval Italian texts they preserve. This original study is both an investigation into the material foundations of literature and a reflection on notions of textuality, writing, and media in late medieval and early modern Italy. Francesco Marco Aresu examines the book-objects of manuscripts and early printed editions, asking questions about the material conditions of production, circulation, and reception of literary works. He invites scholars to reconcile reading with seeing (and with touching) and to challenge contemporary presumptions about technological neutrality and the modes of interfacing and reading. Manuscript Poetics investigates the correspondences between textuality and materiality, content and medium, and visual-verbal messages and their physical support through readings of Dante Alighieri’s Vita nova, Giovanni Boccaccio’s Teseida, and Francesco Petrarca’s canzoniere (Rerum vulgarium fragmenta). Aresu shows that Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarca evaluated and deployed the tools of scribal culture to shape, signal, or layer meanings beyond those they conveyed in their written texts. Medieval texts, Aresu argues, are uniquely positioned to provide this perspective, and they are foundational to the theoretical understanding of new forms and materials in our media-saturated contemporary world.
