It is well to have any two or three books fire library may possess on either of these subjects stand together on a given shelf. But the reader is likely to find three-fourths of the most useful material on either of these subjects in general works on Politi cal Economy, in articles in periodicals, and in various reports and encyclopaedic works. Download or read book An Introduction to Library Classification written by William Charles Berwick Sayers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Library Classification: With Readings, Questions and Examination Papers In order to meet it I have reproduced here, after an exhaustive and somewhat wearisome revision, a series of lessons which I prepared some eight or nine years ago at the suggestion of the late James Duff Brown for the use of students working for the examinations of the Library Association. This original purpose determined the plan of the book, and I have thought it advisable to retain it, in Spite of the fact that it leaves the work full of repeti tions which may be irritating to readers who have some knowledge of the subject. Throughout I have tried to be as rudimentary and as lucid as possible. I assume that my readers are beginners without the most elementary acquaintance with either logic or classification. Necessarily, in so small a compass, I have not exhausted any of the problems of classi fication every chapter could have been expanded tenfold, especially in the second half of the book, but I believe that the essential themes are all touched upon in a way that will lead students to appreciate their meaning and significance. One or two paragraphs are repeated from earlier books Of mine, as I thought it would be affectation to attempt to rewrite what I had written as well as I was able. The simple hypothesis that underlies all I have written is that a general classification is primarily a schedule of the field of knowledge that it is possible to assume an order in knowledge; and that the order most clearly indicated by modern scientific method is the historical order. A general book classification in its essentials is identical with a knowledge classification, and only differs from it in the provision of general and form classes and divisions, and such practical auxiliaries as a notation and an index. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classification of Books: A Paper Read Before the American Library Association, May, 1882 The classification is intended to be permanent only so far as the six main classes A E I O U and Y, and their sub-classes a, b, c, d, e, etc., are concerned. In its details it is Open to modification to suit the needs of libraries devoted mainly to the collection of one or a few classes of books. AS the volumes multiply on the shelves, it is Obvious that the divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., can be added to indefinitely, - by each librarian for himself - without deranging the system. Moreover, the divisions can themselves be subdivided by supplying arbitrary marks. For example, under Zoology (i I have made but one subdivision, that of Birds (i16 whereas an Academy of Natural Sciences might well find it expedient to distribute their works on the animal kingdom in accordance with the elaborate plan set forth in Agassiz's Essay on Classification. On the other hand, a small library may content itself with the classes and sub-classes marked by letters only, or even with the classes A E I O U Y alone. It is to be remarked in passing that, by this arrangement, whatever improvements may be made from time to time in the details of the system, the books have always a relative, and not a fixed location on the shelves. So that they may be moved from shelf to shelf, from case to case, and from building to building, without altering the Shelf marks. Book A Classification and Subject Index for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Classification and Subject Index, for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library The plan of the following Classification and Index was developed early in 1873. It was the result of several months study of library economy as found in some hundreds of books and pamphlets, and in over fifty personal visits to' various American libraries. In this study, the author became convinced that the useful ness of these libraries might be greatly increased without additional expenditure. Three years practical use of the system here explained, leads him to believe that it will accomplish this result; for with its aid, the catalogues, shelf lists, indexes, and cross-references essential to this increased usefulness, can be made more economically than by any other method which he has been able to find. The system was devised for cataloguing and indexing purposes, but it was found on trial to be equally valuable for numbering and arranging books and pamphlets on the shelves. Two thousand two hundred and fifty divi sions are provided, excluding general heads, while provision is made for four thousand five hundred divisions by means of blanks. Each of these divisions is capable of infinite sub-division. For most ordinary purposes the divisions printed will meet every need. Book Library Cataloguing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Library Cataloguing Classic Reprint written by J. Henry Quinn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants - this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished. As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject. I am indebted to my friend Mr. Frank Pacy, City Librarian of Westminster, for reading my proofs and suggesting many improvements, although I am sure he would not care to accept responsibility for all the views expressed or the mode of expressing them. Book On the Classification of Books

Download or read book On the Classification of Books written by Lloyd Pearsall Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Classification of Books: A Paper Read Before the American Library Association, May, 1882 Whether the classification itself is more or less logical than that of others who have attempted this hard and thankless, but needful task, it is not for me to say. It has at least the merit Of not being made out of nothing, but rather of having been evolved from a pre-existing system which has the approval of the best bibliographers Of Europe, and which has been tried for centuries, and not found wanting. Nolumus leyes Anglia? Mutare. I believe the groundwork of the system to be good, but I know very well that the building I have raised upon it can be improved; and there fore any one who thinks of making use of either would do well to study - among others - the Table Methodique of Brunet, and the classification - which, however, is rather crude - of the British Museum. The latter can be consulted in Henry Stevens' Catalogue of the American booles in the Library of the British [museum (london, Mr. Dui's and Mr. Perkins' highly original systems are also full of valuable suggestions, though the former is, to my thinking. Not sufficiently worked out in detail, while the latter, with its six thousand classes - ten times as many as are used in the British Museum - is, if anything, too much so. The reference alphabet - first used by Mr. Dui - gives their systems of classification, in point of practical utility, a decided advantage over others; and Mr. Dui's decimal division brings in an 'element of simplicity which has, in theory at least, some Obvious advantages. It is also steadily making its way into practice, and I understand there are more American libraries now using that plan than any other. Mr. Perkins believes that his system accomplishes some good things which Mr. Dui's does not, and cures some defects in it and I agree with him. If I did not think that mine was on the whole better than either, I should not publish it. Nevertheless, I am free to say that in working out the details I consider Mr. Perkins' arrangement in some respects better than my own, and if I had seen it in time I could have improved mine in several ways. Mr. Swartz's Mnemonic System, and that of Mr. C'utter described in Vol. IV. Of the Library Journal-are also worthy of the highest consideration. Doubtless the true Classification of Books, at once rational and convenient in practice, is a thing yet to be established, but at any rate the materials for it exist; and if the present System with its Index - on which I have been work ing more or less for the past four years - contributes in any degree to make the labors of those who follow me more easy, it is all that I expect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classification of Books in the Library Gradual growth to over volumes (april, 1915) has necessitated amplification. No changes, no erasures, were re quired on the books, catalogues, or other records; the addition of one or more letters proved to be a simple, rapid, cheap process. New subjects. Like Aeroplanes, Photo-plays, War of 1914 easily found their appropriate places. The expansion has been carried down' through class 302, and a few other subjects - as Botany, Architecture, Semitic and Ger manic Literatures, have been similarly treated. For these por tions the classification is ample in a general library of this size. We are printing a very limited edition of the classification as it now stands for our own convenience, and therefore need not apologize for not expanding it as a whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries The books of every library, no matter how small it may he, should be classified, preferably according to some well known system, like the Dewey Decimal classification, for example. It always saves time, confusion, and money in the long run, if a library is started on a proper basis. You may think you can do without this and that until some future time, but you will find that it pays in the end to get and to do the needful things in the very beginning. The time comes but too quickly when an imperfect, makeshift system overpowers you. DO not postpone too freely and too readily. Book New System of Classification and Scheme for Numbering Books Applied to the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia Classic Reprint

Download or read book New System of Classification and Scheme for Numbering Books Applied to the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia Classic Reprint written by John Edmands and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New System of Classification and Scheme for Numbering Books, Applied to the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia The general idea of this system is, First, the division and arrangement of the books, in such principal and subordinate classes, as will make it most easy to determine what works the Library contains, on any topic, and in what part of the collection books on any given subject are to be found; and, Second, the numbering and arranging them on the shelves in such a way that they can be most readily found without consulting a catalogue, or stopping, to ascertain the shelf number. In working out this idea it was found that all the books in any library of a general character, could be gathered into about twenty primary groups or classes, each of which would have a certain completeness, and would embrace a kind of book that was not included in any other class; and also, that the works in each of these several groups or classes, while having certain characteristics in common, yet had peculiarities which furnish ground for the formation of subordinate classes. Some of these primary classes could readily be divided into fifteen or more secondary classes, while others required only six or eight; and it seemed altogether best, to make such an arrangement of classes, and sub-classes, as would be at once recognized as natural and convenient in practical operation. In making this distribution into classes, it was found that about one half of the old divisions in the Library, could be retained as primary classes in the new arrangement, with more or less of transferring of individual books; among these classes are those of History, Biography, Theology, Fine Arts and Medicine. In other cases, two or more of the old classes were found to embrace works that had close affinities with each other, and so they were consolidated to form new primary classes; thus, the old divisions of Poetry and Drama, have been united to form one primary class, under the compound name; and the three former classes, Natural Philosophy, Astronomy and Mathematics, have been united into one, under the name of Mathematics and Physics. The old classes of Commerce and Agriculture has been consolidated with that of Useful Arts; and that of Political Economy has been combined with Sociology and Law. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Library Classification, Theoretical, Historical, and Practical, and a Short Course in Practical Classification: With Readings, Questions and Examination Papers This little work seems to need a preface to excuse its appearance, since it may be thought that I have already written enough, and more than enough, upon the subject of bibliographical classification. Two years ago I gathered into a volume, Canons of Classification, a series of essays in which I stated in concentrated form what I considered to be the principles underlying the construction of a book classification, and then focussed them upon the four schemes most generally in use in libraries. I hoped for a small circle of readers; but to my surprise the work received a comparatively wide welcome, and achieved what is not exactly usual with library manuals written by Englishmen, a circulation in America. The present volume does not make the Canons supererogatory; on the contrary that work, with all its imperfections, and, it may be, fallacies, is the best work I have done or am likely to do upon classification. One outcome of it, however, has been the criticism that in it I took too much for granted, that I presumed in my readers a certain acquaintance with technical terms, logical reasoning, and classification construction generally. That criticism is perhaps just. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
