Book Research Within the Disciplines

Download or read book Research Within the Disciplines written by Peggy Keeran and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research lies at the heart of all academic disciplines. Research Within the Disciplines: Foundations for Reference and Library Instruction is an expansion of that concept. The book provides an overview of research practices and literacy standards in the various disciplines_humanities, music, social sciences, business, government publications, engineering, and sciences_to help shape library instruction and reference assistance. Conceived and developed by the reference librarians at the University of Denver, the book grew out of team discussions about teaching research and writing within the disciplines. The book's main objective is to provide a degree of orientation toward conducting research within specific disciplines and across others. The volume includes separate chapters on the broad disciplines covered in undergraduate education, as well as concluding chapters addressing interdisciplinary research and the role of instruction as a means of developing effective researchers. The continued necessity of understanding the foundations of research, whether within the physical library or via the electronic environment, remains an underlying concern, and the advice put forth by this team of practicing academic librarians is an important step to achieving this goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Science in the Archives" reveals affinities and continuities among the sciences of the archives, across many disciplines and centuries, in order to present a better picture of essential archival practices and, thereby, the meaning of science. For in both the natural and human sciences, archives of the most diverse forms make cumulative, collective knowledge possible. Yet in contrast to laboratories, observatories, or the field, archives have yet to be studied across the board as central sites of science. The volume covers episodes in the history of astronomy, geology, genetics, classical philology, climatology, history, medicine, and ancient natural philosophy, as well as fundamental practices such as collecting, retrieval strategies, and data mining. The time frame spans doxology in Greco-Roman antiquity to NSA surveillance techniques and the quantified-self movement. Each chapter explores the practices, politics, economics, and open-ended potential of the sciences of the archives, making this the first book devoted to the role of archives in the natural and human sciences.

Download or read book Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy 7 written by Andre HECK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy isthemostancientsciencehumanshavepracticedonEarth. Itisascienceofextremesandoflargenumbers:extremesoftime–fromthe big bang to in?nity –, of distances, of temperatures, of density and masses, ofmagnetic?eld, etc.Itisasciencewhichishighlyvisible, notonlybecause stars and planets are accessible in the sky to the multitude, but also - cause the telescopes themselves are easily distinguishable, usually on top of scenic mountains, and also because their cost usually represent a subst- tialproportionofthenation’sbudgetandofthetaxpayerscontributionsto that budget. As such, astronomy cannot pass unnoticed. It touches on the origins of matter, of the Universe where we live, on life and on our destiny. It touches on philosophy as well as on religion. Astronomy is the direct c- tactofhumankindwithitsoriginsandtheimmensityofuniversalnature. It is indeed a science of observation where experimentation is practically - possible and which is ruled by mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistical analysis and modelling, while o?ering the largest number of veri?cations of the most advanced theories of fundamental physics such as general r- st ativity and gravitation. At the beginning of the 21 century astronomy is clearly a multidisciplinary activity touching on all aspects of science. It is therefore logical that in the past and still now, astronomy has attracted the most famous scientists, be they pure observers, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, experimentalists, and even politicians.

Silahkan simak penuturan pustakawan Jerman, Czech Republic serta Mexico dan tentu saja Indonesia. “We astronomy librarians are also very fortunate because we work in a technologically advanced environment where many evelopments like access to databases, availability of e-journals, extensive text-mining, and others have been implemented much earlier than in other subject areas. Somemes am asked whether I would like to change job now that I have spent 20 years in the same instuon. My answer has been and always will be the same: if the environment around you and the technologies you apply in your daily work evolve constantly, there is no need to change job, because you are changing with the job” (Uta Grothkopf, Head, Library and Informaon Centre, ESO - European Southern Observatory, Germany) “Pri pohledu z okna knihovny mùže bÿt dr. Book Information Handling in Astronomy

Download or read book Information Handling in Astronomy written by Andre Heck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pilot boat just moved away and'its lights are already fading towards the coast of Northeastern Queensland over which Saturn is going to set. There is still quite some time to go before dawn. The big ship has now regained her cruise speed following its roughly northwesterly route in the South Coral Sea along the chain of nearby reefs. Few people are around at this time, except a dozen early birds sharing some 'shipshaping' exercise on the top deck and taking advantage of the relative coolness of the night. On my way down to the stateroom, I cannot but stop once more in front of that elegant composition by British artist Brigid Collins (1963-) hanging in the monumental staircase between Decks 7 and 8. That piece 2 of art, a 1.8x 1.8m oil on canvas plus collage entitled Berinl in honour of the Danish explorer, gathers together many navigation-related themes of the time: Suns, Moons, planets, sky maps, astrolabes, small telescopes, as well as drawings, diagrams and charts of all kinds. It is somehow a digest of how astronomical information was then collected, made available, and used.

Book Scholarly Communications

Download or read book Scholarly Communications written by John J. Regazzi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly Communications: A History from Content as King to Content as Kingmaker traces the development of scholarly communications from the creation of the first scientific journal through the wide diversity of professional information services today. Unlike any other book, this work is an authoritative history by the past President of Elsevier and current Professor at Long Island University, which examines the changing nature of scholarly communication throughout its history, including its research importance as well as its business value. It specifically covers four key themes: the value of scholarly content and information at various stages of it development and use; the role that technology has played on the use, importance, and value of scholarly information and research communications; the changing business models affecting the system of scholarly communication from the way it is produced to how it is distributed and consumed; and some of the implications of mobile, cloud, and social computing technologies on the future of scholarly communications. Attention is paid to analyzing the structural changes that the professional publishing community now faces. Regazzi examines research content as an economic good; how technology and business models have greatly affected the value of scholarly publishing; and the drivers of the future sustainability of our system of scholarly communication.
