Book Passages From the History of Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Passages From the History of Liberty Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Passages From the History of Liberty It is hardly necessary to explain the connection between the Passages, drawn all from one great stream of History, which are contained in this little volume. The efforts of the first Italian Reformers, here, of course, very briefly sketched, are illustrations of the isolation and travail of the Dark Ages. Wycliffe's work was a work of national principles, just beginning, in his time, to be acknowledged by his country of England. Savonarola's reforms express the desires for peace and purification, which were in all true hearts, during a period of so much strife and so many stains, as that period of transition from the Middle Ages to our Modern Times. The Castilian war is one among numerous histories concerning the same desires for juster principles and larger life, as they were in many places forced into struggles, tumultuous and unavailing. Without turning away from abstract truths, that are vigorous and beautiful to all who have open souls, we may be glad to seek the greater power and completer beauty which belong to human examples. We begin with things individual to end with things general, and all our Cathedrals must be built up, column by column, stone by stone. It is after such simplest purposes that these passages are here put together. Although neither many in number, nor full in detail, they may nevertheless be as clear, separately, as a single diminutive volume can be made to comprehend. Book A Defense of Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Defense of Liberty Classic Reprint written by Oliver Brett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Defense of Liberty The statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is a somewhat trite object of contemplation. Both the cynic and the idealist have used that gigantic image to fill the gaps of many a moral tale and idle platitude. Its magnificent position, its ironic proximity to the marvelous metropolis of modern commerce, its embodiment of the ideas of Jefferson and Rousseau are so compelling a combination that I do not see how that dominating figure can fail to stir the pulses or quicken the imagination. Great is Diana of the Ephesians. It pleases men to solidify their ideals. The world is strewn with the frozen memorials of this desire, the desire for definite and unchangeable standards, the desire to record once and for all that this and no other is what we believe, and shall always believe. And, as in the case of Ozymandias, "nothing beside remains." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Liberty Which the ruler should he suffered to exercise over the community and this limitation was What they meant by liberty. It was attempted in two ways. First, by obtaining a recognition of certain immunities, called political liberties or rights, which it was to be regarded as a breach of duty in the ruler to infringe, and which if he did infringe, specific resistance, or general rebellion, was held to be justifiable. A second, and generally a later ex pedient, was the establishment of constitutional checks, by which the consent of the community, or of a body of some sort, supposed to represent its interests, was made a necessary condition to some of the more important acts of the governing power. To the first of these modes of limitation, the ruling power, in most European countries, was compelled, more or less, to submit. It was not so with the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Liberty In the early months of 1916 I wrote a book entitled The Decline of Liberty in England. It was composed in illness and in a period of acute anxiety about causes and individuals. Like many others I then feared that even if the Central Powers were defeated the British Empire would by victory be converted to Prussian ideals. Yet to-day as I write these words the Central Powers are defeated and the Allies are laying the foundations of international peace. In 1916 it was difficult to write of liberty except in the sentimental manner of John Stuart Mill. War and fear of war have necessarily always been the worst enemies of liberty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Necklace of Liberty Ike the ocean after a storm has passed, when the waves are in commotion though the wind has subsided, the Ameri can people are still agitated by the blast of war which blew so fiercely over our country now nearly a quarter of a century ago. This state of affairs puzzles the politicians, and as they toss about in their little canoes upon the sea of public opinion, many of them are hoisting their sails to catch a breeze which no longer exists, and in a condition of agitated imbecility are peering about the horizon wondering which way the wind blows; some are even demented enough to think they can fill their sails with their own feeble breath, and are puff ing away like mad in ludicrous imitation of the storm that has gone by. But their actions, which make them ridiculous, have. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Liberty The study of political theories seems to be attracting considerable attention at present, a number of able writers, such as Dunning, Willoughby, Merriam. Osgood, and others having recently made contributions to this branch of research. Political theories are not only of theoretical interest, but have at times greatly influenced historical development. This is true in marked degree of those ideas whose genesis is traced in the following pages. They have been put forward repeatedly as a protest against oppression and arbitrary power. Their greatest influence, however, has made itself felt since the American Revolution. They have in large measure contributed to make our American political institutions what they are to-day. They are often spoken of as American principles. Though they did not originate in this country, they were here for the first time incorporated in the political programme of a great nation, and have been more completely realized here than in any other country. The following dissertation was begun at the suggestion of Professor Max Lenz of the University of Berlin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Daughter of Liberty Three rides are memorable in the early his tory of the Revolution. One is the well-known ride of Paul Revere, who, on.the night of April 18, 177 5, warned the country about Boston of the intended British raid on the morrow. Less Celebrated in verse and story, but equally worthy of commemoration, was the ride of Caesar Rodney, who, on July second of the same year, rode from Dover, Delaware, to Philadelphia to carry Delaware's vote in favour of the Declaration of Independence, covering the distance of eighty miles in thirty hours. Early in November, I 775, a young English serving boy rode from the headquarters of the provincial army at Cambridge to Kennebunk, Maine, in less than thirty-six hours. Untold in verse or story, its record preserved only in family papers, or as a dim tradition of the Maine coast, the ride of Anthony Severn was no less heroic in its action and memorable in its consequences. Book The Lower of Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lower of Liberty Classic Reprint written by Julia A. M. Furbish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lower of Liberty It has been suggested, that it would be well to have in the collection one representation, at least, of our ban ner, all tattered and torn; but, on reflection, I shrank from the thought of thus helping to commemorate the fact that it had been insulted by those who had solemnly sworn to keep it flying in the face of all foes without and foes within. I chose rather to regard it as a thing of divine life, which, though trampled on for a while, will, from its inherent self-restoring power, rise again, and, in company with him from whose teachings it Sprang and blossomed into the Flower of Liberty, will, to the end of time and throughout the world, keep pace with the progress of Christianity and equal rights. After four years of as heroic bravery in deadly combat as was ever recorded of the embattled hosts of Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon, or Wellington, it now shakes out its trium phant folds over all the late rebellious States of the Union. It waves, alas! Over rivers and seas, over moun tains and plains, crimsoned with the blood of many thousands of gallant and noble young men, Whose souls, like setting suns, Have left their radiance flung on sea and shore. Book Lafayette the Friend of American Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lafayette the Friend of American Liberty Classic Reprint written by Alma Holman Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lafayette, the Friend of American Liberty The story of the Marquis de Lafayette forms one of the most interesting chapters in the history of human liberty. To understand clearly the nature of Lafayette's services, both to America and to the whole world, we must first think of the conditions of life at the beginning of his career, and then contrast them with those which now prevail. One hundred and forty years ago, when Lafayette was a child, the world was not so pleasant a place to live in as it is in our own time. Even in the most enlight ened countries of Europe, the majority of the people were downtrodden and oppressed. Men had scarcely so much as heard of liberty. Outside of England and her colonies, the idea of popular freedom was unknown. This idea, as you may have learned elsewhere, seems to have been a sort of birthright of the anglo-saxon race. Ever since the barons of England forced King John to grant them a charter of rights, the peoples of that race have defended and cherished it. Like 'a spark of fire in the midst of gen eral gloom, it has oftentimes been almost extinguished; and yet, no matter how its enemies have tried to pstamp it out, it has survived and been rekindled.
