Book The Bishop the Mullah and the Smartphone

Download or read book The Bishop the Mullah and the Smartphone written by Bryan Winters and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not so long ago the world resisted change, often using religious-reasoning. Small wonder--the printing press, a sixteenth century disruptive device, split Christianity. Now the globe welcomes digital disruption, even praising it as a solution for faltering economies. Religions don't have much choice but to follow, because information is a prime asset of faith. Believers treasure and reframe their past, and present. However, both old and current data is now available in huge quantities, visually and instantly. Movies provide more spiritual guidance than holy texts, and terror merchants use the uncontrollable Internet to gain hearts and minds. Nevertheless a turbulent re-mythologization of adherents towards peaceful versions of their belief can be tracked. There are positive things we can all do to help, which is just as well in a world that suggests only political acts count.

Book The Powerful Presence of the Past

Download or read book The Powerful Presence of the Past written by Jacqueline Knörr and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conceptualizes integration and conflict as interrelated dimensions of social interaction, social relationships and alliances, identifications and identity constructions within society at large. In order to reach an in-depth understanding of integrative and violent forms of interaction in the region of the Upper Guinea Coast, authors take into account the impact and repercussions of specific historical experiences as well as the continuities and changes of social patterns affected by the interaction of local and globalized values, institutions, and models of social organization. Rather than providing an(other) analysis of wars and violence as such, contributors aim at a better understanding of the social mechanisms that affect both the processes of integration and conflict at the local, national and regional levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilized Women is concerned with the intersection of cultural constructions of gender and other systems of ranking among the Glebo people of Cape Palmas, in southeastern Liberia. Like other Liberians, the Glebo people make a social distinction between western-educated wage-earners, or "civilized people," and traditional subsistence agriculturists, or "natives." The civilized-native dichotomy splits the Glebo community and Liberian society in general, in contrast to other West African nations, where ethnicity or regionalism provides important markers of personal identity.Through a close analysis of the local history of male labor migration, contact with African-American settlers, and the influence of Protestant Episcopal missionaries, Mary H. Moran shows how the Glebo have incorporated the civilized/native dichotomy into other systems of prestige allocation based on gender and age, capturing the poignant nature of "civilized" and traditional roles for women.
