Book Representation of the Banlieusard in Literature Cinema and Performances

Download or read book Representation of the Banlieusard in Literature Cinema and Performances written by Emma Chebinou and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-09-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representation of the Banlieusard in Literature, Cinema, and Performances: Francephobia explores the complex identity of the banlieusard within French society through literature, film and pop culture, such as rap music and stand-up comedy. The banlieue, known in English as the “inner city,” is home to underrepresented and marginalized descendants of North- and West- African immigrants as well as some white European immigrants or white French individuals. Established in tall housing estates located on the wider outskirts of Paris, the banlieue is a space constructed through the systemic disenfranchisement of working-class people across genders, ethnicities, and race and through associations with crime, unemployment, poverty, etc. In face of these challenges, the banlieusard(e) attempts to claim their Frenchness but finds oneself trapped by society’s negative perception. Similarly, they are also physically trapped in their space of high-rise buildings and in a social/economic sphere with preconceived beliefs making it difficult to integrate and contribute to French society. This book aims to emphasize resistance and the agency of the banlieusard(e) rather than pointing out their marginalization by society’s preconceptions. Therefore, the spatial arrangement of the projects where they live redefines, deconstructs, reconstructs and reverses the center/periphery dichotomy, in which the center becomes the banlieue and as a result, its outcast status is diminished. Through a varied selection of novels, films, rap and stand-up comedy, Emma Chebinou exposes the necessity in examining negative stigmas created by the institutional discourse and by space and gives a broader interpretation of the banlieue.

Book Acc l rer la r duction de la pauvret en Afrique

Download or read book Acc l rer la r duction de la pauvret en Afrique written by Kathleen Beegle and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Families and Frontiers written by Kathryn Edwards and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As put forth by Edwards, the eastern duchy and the western county of Burgundy constituted a frontier society from the death of Charles the Bold in 1477 until 1540. Through detailed case studies and family reconstructions of elites from the Saône River valley, specifically the cities of Dijon, Dole, and Besançon, this book examines the social, cultural, political, and economic relationships of the Burgundians on a local level. Edwards successfully challenges the national models still frequently used in modern historiography and offers a provocative alternative to better understand this anomalous area and the creation of pre-modern regional identity.

Book 750 French Verbs and Their Uses

Download or read book 750 French Verbs and Their Uses written by Jan R. Zamir and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1992-08-17 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential grammar taught simply and directly. 750 French Verbs and Their Uses gives you the backbone of language study -- correct verb usage -- by showing verb conjugations in their contexts. To understand the value of such an approach, consider the English verb "to hold," the meaning of which can change dramatically when used in expressions such as "hold on," "hold up," "hold off," and "hold down"; in French, as students of the language have perennially learned to their frustration, the changes are far broader and apply to many more verbs. Now you won't have to guess how a verb is used in a sentence: 750 French Verbs and Their Uses gives you all the correct variations and grammatical interrelationships. Correct usages are illustrated in common phrases and idiomatic expressions. Unusual or troublesome expressions are emphasized throughout. And special attention is given to reflexive verbs (often difficult for English speakers) to make their usage clear. Perfect for students and travelers, ideal as a text, a grammar book and a reference, 750 French Verbs and Their Uses will help you not only to conjugate verbs, but also to use them correctly and comprehensibly. Series Editors: Jan R. Zamir, PhD, and Sonia Zamir, MA Also available in the series: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses and 750 Spanish Verbs and Their Uses.
