Download or read book Human Rights written by Albert A. Zinnos and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights refers to the concept of human beings as having universal rights, or status, regardless of legal jurisdiction, and likewise other localising factors, such as ethnicity and nationality. For many, the concept of "human rights" is based in religious principles. However, because a formal concept of human rights has not been universally accepted, the term has some degree of variance between its use in different local jurisdictions -- difference in both meaningful substance as well as in protocols for and styles of application. Ultimately the most general meaning of the term is one which can only apply universally, and hence the term "human rights" is often itself an appeal to such transcended principles, without basing such on existing legal concepts. The term "humanism" refers to the developing doctrine of such universally applicable values, and it is on the basic concept that human beings have innate rights, that more specific local legal concepts are often based. Within particular societies, "human rights" refers to standards of behaviour as accepted within their respective legal systems regarding 1) the well being of individuals, 2) the freedom and autonomy of individuals, and 3) the representation of the human interest in government. These rights commonly include the right to life, the right to an adequate standard of living, the prohibition of genocide, freedom from torture and other mistreatment, freedom of expression, freedom of movement, the right to self-determination, the right to education, and the right to participation in cultural and political life. These norms are based on the legal and political traditions of United Nations member states and are incorporated into international human rights instruments. This new book brings together the latest book literature centred on this crucial topic.

Book Realism and Moralism in International Relations

Download or read book Realism and Moralism in International Relations written by Janse de Jonge and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Frans Alting von Geusau held the chair of Professor of International Organizations at Tilburg University. His life-long academic and distinguished career is reflected in this book. He has long inspired others with his insistence that political realism can only be matched with a sense of ethical purpose. This moral dimension of international relations is one of the main themes of the 23 contributions. Academics from the United States, the UK, Israel, The Netherlands and other European countries give their view of a world which faces the challenges of the next millennium. Those who share von Geusau's deep interest in the cultural and moral dimensions of international relations will find excellent essays on this issue in this book. Those who want to enlarge their views on the (uncertain) future of a united Europe will find inspiring ideas and visions in this book. This book demonstrates that what really matters is righteousness and justice for all.

This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights play a crucial role in today's international relations. They provide standards to which states must conform when dealing with their own citizens. Non-governmental human rights organizations remind states of their obligations in that field. Without this, human rights would have drifted to the bottom of the international agenda.

Book The United Nations Security Council in the Post Cold War Era

Download or read book The United Nations Security Council in the Post Cold War Era written by Kenneth Manusama and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Security Council is meant to be the central international organ for maintaining international peace and security, and it has a profound impact on the rights and duties of states under international law. However, it has been severely criticized throughout its existence. This book examines the role of international law in its decisions and decision-making process since the end of the Cold War, with the principle of legality as theoretical framework. It explores the limits that international law places on the Security Council, i.e. what it is allowed to demand of and impose on states. More importantly, however, this study provides great insight into how states use international legal arguments in the Council’s decision-making process, and whether the Security Council has in practice respected and observed these legal limits. Selected case studies include Iraq, the former Yugoslavia, Haiti, East Timor and international terrorism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wessel Gansfort (1419-1489) is the author of a number of astute but difficult texts which indicate the high level of late-medieval spirituality and scholarship in northern Europe. Together with his younger friend Agricola (1444-1485) he ushered in the beginning of modern intellectual life in the northern part of the Netherlands (the province of Groningen) and adjoining Germany. This volume contains eight contributions on Gansfort, enlarging the range of perceptions of his work and personality for the first time since the major studies of 1917 and 1933 by Maarten van Rhijn. There are three additional articles on the Devotio Moderna and its influence, and eight on various subjects and personalities touching early Humanism and the Reformation in this range. Each of these studies is the result of entirely new and original research. The volume is concluded by a large bibliography.
