Download or read book Total Science written by Jean-Guy Prévost and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-09-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Total Science, Jean-Guy Prévost charts how Italian statistics emerged as a full-fledged discipline, giving rise to a network of university chairs, journals, and other institutions. He focuses on episodes such as the creation of the famous Gini coefficient and the statisticians' participation in Italy's war effort and also analyses the intellectual project to which most statisticians were committed, that of creating a quantitative social science. In doing so he reveals the political and ideological use of the work of statisticians during the Fascist era.
Download or read book Algebraic Geometry between Tradition and Future written by Gilberto Bini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incredible season for algebraic geometry flourished in Italy between 1860, when Luigi Cremona was assigned the chair of Geometria Superiore in Bologna, and 1959, when Francesco Severi published the last volume of the treatise on algebraic systems over a surface and an algebraic variety. This century-long season has had a prominent influence on the evolution of complex algebraic geometry - both at the national and international levels - and still inspires modern research in the area. "Algebraic geometry in Italy between tradition and future" is a collection of contributions aiming at presenting some of these powerful ideas and their connection to contemporary and, if possible, future developments, such as Cremonian transformations, birational classification of high-dimensional varieties starting from Gino Fano, the life and works of Guido Castelnuovo, Francesco Severi's mathematical library, etc. The presentation is enriched by the viewpoint of various researchers of the history of mathematics, who describe the cultural milieu and tell about the bios of some of the most famous mathematicians of those times.
Download or read book Decision Theory written by Giovanni Parmigiani and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision theory provides a formal framework for making logical choices in the face of uncertainty. Given a set of alternatives, a set of consequences, and a correspondence between those sets, decision theory offers conceptually simple procedures for choice. This book presents an overview of the fundamental concepts and outcomes of rational decision making under uncertainty, highlighting the implications for statistical practice. The authors have developed a series of self contained chapters focusing on bridging the gaps between the different fields that have contributed to rational decision making and presenting ideas in a unified framework and notation while respecting and highlighting the different and sometimes conflicting perspectives. This book: Provides a rich collection of techniques and procedures. Discusses the foundational aspects and modern day practice. Links foundations to practical applications in biostatistics, computer science, engineering and economics. Presents different perspectives and controversies to encourage readers to form their own opinion of decision making and statistics. Decision Theory is fundamental to all scientific disciplines, including biostatistics, computer science, economics and engineering. Anyone interested in the whys and wherefores of statistical science will find much to enjoy in this book.

Download or read book Genetic and Phenotypic Markers of Tumors written by Stuart A. Aaronson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of tumor markers is not only one of the most important but also one that offers one of the richest perspectives in biology and clinical oncology. The aim of scientists in this field is to adduce evidence of a property that is typical of and exclusive to tumor cells, and which is easy to determine, in order to immediately recognize, or even better, to foresee, neoplastic transformations. Unfortunately, despite the large number of scientists and laboratories engaged in this work, the ideal tumor marker has not yet been identified. However, it is worth noting that new trends in molecular biology and immunovirology have recently opened up new avenues that may lead to the eventual resolution of this problem. In this book, different approaches to the identification of tumor markers, from the points of view of biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology, are compared in order to explore possible interrelationships and to stimulate scientific collaboration among scientists active in these fields, both in basic research and in clinical applications. We wish to thank all the contributors and also the publisher, especially Dr. Robert Andrews, for making the publication of this book possible.
