Download or read book Hunting Humans written by Elliott Leyton and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic study, Elliott Leyton challenges the conventional idea of serial murderers as deranged madmen. He explores the twisted – but comprehensible – motives of a half-dozen notorious killers: Edmund Emil Kemper, Theodore Robert Bundy, Albert DeSalvo (“The Boston Strangler”), David Richard Berkowitz (“Son of Sam”), Mark James Robert Essex, and Charles Starkweather. In the process of describing their crimes Leyton exposes the cold rationality that underlies their apparent pointlessness. The result is startling: a revelatory text on a deeply troubling topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of nearly 200 old photographs of Leyton and Leytonstone illustrates some of the dramatic changes and growth that have occurred in this busy suburban area over the last hundred years. Although Leyton and Leytonstone existed for centuries as an ancient parish on the fringes of the capital, it saw, like many other communities, enormous and rapid growth when the railways arrived. Easy and cheap access to the metropolis enabled people for the first time to commute to work and so thousands sought housing in areas like this and initiated the growth on the London suburbs. When the Midland Railway's route passed through Leyton and Leytonstone in 1894 it was the signal for a population rise that transformed the community from a parish that had numbered around 5,000 in 1861 to an urban district council in 1901 of nearly 99,000 people. These photographs show many aspects of life in the area from the time of this great expansion and through the decades that followed. This book will fascinate all who know Leyton and Leytonstone and would enjoy a nostalgic trip into its recent past.

Paul Talling investigates how these rivers shaped the city - forming borough boundaries and transport networks, fashionable spas and stagnant slums - and how they all eventually gave way to railways, roads and sewers. Armed with his camera, he traces their routes and reveals their often overlooked remains: riverside pubs on the Old Kent Road, healing wells in King's Cross, 'stink pipes' in Hammersmith and gurgling gutters on streets across the city. Packed with maps and over 100 colour photographs, London's Lost Rivers uncovers the watery history of the city's most famous sights, bringing to life the very different London that lies beneath our feet.

Book Different Class

Download or read book Different Class written by Dermot Kavanagh and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for Biography of the Year at the British Sports Book Awards When Laurie Cunningham played for England in an under-21s match against Scotland in 1977, he became the first black footballer to represent England professionally. Two years later, he would become the first Englishman to play for Real Madrid. In a time when racist chants flew from the stands, Cunningham's success challenged how black players were perceived, paving the way for future generations. But Cunningham was more than an exceptional footballer who could play like a dream. He was a dandy with a love of funk music and bespoke suits, as easily graceful on the dance floor as he was on the pitch. Different Class is a portrait of an important but unsung figure who brought glamour to the game at a particularly dark point in its history. Many know Laurie Cunningham’s name but not his story; now they will know both.
