Book Protected Areas and the Regional Planning Imperative in North America

Download or read book Protected Areas and the Regional Planning Imperative in North America written by John Chadwick Day and published by Calgary : University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional planning is imperative if North America has any hope of retaining continental biodiversity. This timely collection of essays that presents new protected area theory, method, and practice reinforces this theme of regional planning. With a North American focus, these essays consider the history, ecology, policy, and planning of protected areas while raising awareness of their contribution to society. Contemporary understanding of protected areas are challenged as the book forces readers to move from a mentality of the past that saw protected areas as "fortresses," to a wider understanding of where protected areas are seen as interdependent with other landscapes in the matters of biodiversity, ecological integrity, and environmental health. Public officials in resources and environmental management, NGOs concerned with parks and protected areas, and students of tourism, environment, and planning and education will find current ideology and application in this collection of essays by scholars from Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Book Climate Displacement in Mexico

Download or read book Climate Displacement in Mexico written by Armelle Gouritin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-12 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the updated results of an investigation carried out in 2019. The National Autonomous University of Mexico’s (UNAM) Climate Change Research Program (PINCC), funded the research coordinated by Armelle Gouritin. The research aims to answer the following questions: Does the Mexican legal framework and public policies address forced internal climate mobility? If not, what could be the elements of a legal framework and public policies to address the phenomenon? As the phenomenon was approached it was clear that it was extremely complex and consisted of numerous tensions that would lead to other questions throughout the research process. Climate forced internal displacement is projected as a huge-scale phenomenon in Mexico. Against this background, the book provides the first critical diagnosis of the current politico-legal Mexican framework and finds it to be lagging behind in terms of prevention and attention. The book analyses the three-level Mexican governance (federal, state and local levels), and identifies serious loopholes according to a rights-based approach that particularly focuses on women, indigenous peoples, and persons and communities with scarce economic resources. The results provide information on up-coming legislative and political processes and provide benchmarks that can be applied in other case-studies, including other national frameworks’ critical analysis.

Book Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture

Download or read book Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture written by Hiroshan Hettiarachchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a broad and global level description of the current status of wastewater use in agriculture and then brings the readers to various places in the MENA Region and Europe to explain how some countries and regions have addressed the challenges during implementation. On a global scale, over 20 million hectares of agricultural land are irrigated using wastewater. This is one good, and perhaps the most prominent, example of the safe use potential of wastewater. Water scarcity and the cost of energy and fertilisers are among the main factors driving millions of farmers and other entrepreneurs to make use of wastewater. In order to address the technical, institutional, and policy challenges of safe water reuse, developing countries and countries in transition need clear institutional arrangements and more skilled human resources, with a sound understanding of the opportunities and potential risks of wastewater use. Stakeholders in wastewater irrigation who need to implement from scratch or improve current conditions, find it difficult to gather the necessary information on practical implementation aspects. The main objective of this book is to bridge that gap.
