Book Lexique Syntaxe et Lexique Grammaire Syntax Lexis Lexicon Grammar

Download or read book Lexique Syntaxe et Lexique Grammaire Syntax Lexis Lexicon Grammar written by Christian Leclère and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-29 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Gross, who died in December 2001, was a pioneer and leading thinker in the field of modern linguistics. Long before computers could facilitate large-scale, lexically-based language study, he and his team began building an exhaustive, empirically-based inventory of the "lexicon-grammar" of French which, thirty years later, still remains the most complete syntax-based lexicon available. Researchers all over the world have adopted the Gross model of description, which serves as a computational model for any language. As can be seen in the contributions in this volume, it has been applied to languages as different as Arabic, Chinese, English, Greek or Korean (as well as the major Romance languages, of course). In this volume the reader will also find a number of articles by eminent linguists who were close friends of Maurice Gross, and frequently in dialogue with him on linguistic issues. No matter whether they shared his theoretical views, or his particular empirical methods of description, they each had great respect for his work, especially for the close-grained linguistic analysis which has set a benchmark for future generations.

Book Lexique Lexicologie Lexicographie

Download or read book Lexique Lexicologie Lexicographie written by Pierre Swiggers and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A joke, one might think, knowing that ancient grammar famously lacked a syntactic component. Not so, say the scholars: the very absence of the category syntax calls for theoretical and historical analysis, and a scratch at the surface reveals that ancient grammarians did indeed recognize and deal with various aspects of syntax. The 16 papers, five of them in English and the others in German or French, look at syntactic description and reflection in antiquity, Alexandrian grammarians and syntax, virtues and vices of speech, and the Latin and Byzantine heritage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the linguistic tools which enable speakers and writers to propose adjustments and re-adjustments of the sentences they’ve just produced, as well as the goals they fulfil by doing so. We examine corrections, reformulations, specifications, modifications of points of views and link them with discursive strategies. (Re)-adjustments can be made in order to express oneself in a better way, to favor comprehension by adapting to the addressee, to structure one’s intervention, to play on the potentialities of language (polysemy, homonymy, ambiguity), to mention the main purposes associated with the use of those devices. The study focuses on the markers associated with those strategies. Therefore, it links the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic levels.

Book Description and Measurement of Bilingualism

Download or read book Description and Measurement of Bilingualism written by Louis G. Kelly and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1969-12-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1967 the Canadian National Commission for Unesco and the Université de Moncton jointly sponsored an international seminar on bilingualism. Although 1967 was Canada's centennial year, the seminar was concerned only incidentally with bilingualism in Canada. Instead, bilingualism was considered as the essential element in communication between language irrespective of national boundaries. Participants included linguists, psychologists, and sociologists. The report shows that the interdisciplinary discussions carried on at Moncton were fruitful; that significant questions about bilingualism were raised and an improvement in communication between specialists from different traditions, languages, and cultures were effected. This volumes makes a valuable contribution toward establishing a general theory of bilingualism.

Book excerpt: This work considers the impact of technology on our command of (foreign) languages, and the effects that our (lack of) linguistic skills have on technology, even though modern communications technology implies mulitlingualism, yet at the same time paves the way for the development of a "lingua franca". The challenges are not only industrial, political, social administrative, judicial, ethical; they are also cultural and linguistic. This volume is a collection of essays and the edited results of some of the presentations and debates from two international forums on the subject.
