Download or read book The malleable body written by Heidi Hausse and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses amputation and prostheses to tell a new story about medicine and embodied knowledge-making in early modern Europe. It draws on the writings of craft surgeons and learned physicians to follow the heated debates that arose from changing practices of removing limbs, uncovering tense moments in which decisions to operate were made. Importantly, it teases out surgeons’ ideas about the body embedded in their technical instructions. This unique study also explores the material culture of mechanical hands that amputees commissioned locksmiths, clockmakers, and other artisans to create, revealing their roles in developing a new prosthetic technology. Over two centuries of surgical and artisanal interventions emerged a growing perception, fundamental to biomedicine today, that humans could alter the body — that it was malleable.
Download or read book Caesarean written by Rosemary Mander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically analyzes the place of caesarean in childbearing at the beginning of the twenty first century. It questions the changes that are taking place in childbirth and, in particular, the effects and implications of an increase in caesarean births. This controversial work by a practising midwife and researcher, includes discussion of: the context of the operation and description of it health systems around the world and their caesarean incidence rates decision-making and cultural/medical constraints the short and long term implications of caesarean for baby and mother. Using up-to-date research, Rosemary Mander bases her argument on a firm evidence-base and argues that the rapidly rising caesarean section rate may not be for the benefit of either the woman giving birth or her baby. Rather, the beneficiaries may actually be those professionals whose investment is in extending the range of their influence and thus increasing the medicalization of normal life.

Download or read book Mining Language written by Allison Margaret Bigelow and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mineral wealth from the Americas underwrote and undergirded European colonization of the New World; American gold and silver enriched Spain, funded the slave trade, and spurred Spain's northern European competitors to become Atlantic powers. Building upon works that have narrated this global history of American mining in economic and labor terms, Mining Language is the first book-length study of the technical and scientific vocabularies that miners developed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as they engaged with metallic materials. This language-centric focus enables Allison Bigelow to document the crucial intellectual contributions Indigenous and African miners made to the very engine of European colonialism. By carefully parsing the writings of well-known figures such as Cristobal Colon and Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes and lesser-known writers such Alvaro Alonso Barba, a Spanish priest who spent most of his life in the Andes, Bigelow uncovers the ways in which Indigenous and African metallurgists aided or resisted imperial mining endeavors, shaped critical scientific practices, and offered imaginative visions of metalwork. Her creative linguistic and visual analyses of archival fragments, images, and texts in languages as diverse as Spanish and Quechua also allow her to reconstruct the processes that led to the silencing of these voices in European print culture.

Download or read book Pathways to a Centered Body written by Donna Farhi and published by Embodied Wisdom Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-10 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoga teachers Donna Farhi and Leila Stuart have joined forces to produce a definitive guide to centering the body. With over five decades of combined experience in working with people of all ages, and from diverse movement disciplines, Farhi and Stuart share their gentle, yet incredibly effective approach to balancing body structure for optimal pain-free movement. This book demystifies the catch phrase “core strength” and teaches you how to center your pelvis and find optimal spinal alignment as the foundation for true core stability. Farhi and Stuart begin by walking you through the anatomy of the deepest core muscle in the body: the supportive psoas. Using easy to understand terms, combined with beautiful illustrations, they unravel the complexities of the psoas to reveal its function as an extraordinary unifying structure for the entire body. When these deep core muscles are tight, weak, or unbalanced, the position of the pelvis and spine is thrown off-center. Poor posture, back pain, and discomfort in lying down, sitting, standing, and walking can result. In a step-by-step protocol, you’ll learn how to release, lengthen, balance, and move again with ease. As deeply held tension is resolved, this work can help you to feel more grounded, mentally focused, emotionally calm, and more able to stay connected to yourself and to others. Trialed over decades of working with hundreds of Yoga students, Farhi and Stuart share simple and accessible techniques that realign the body and pave the way toward whole body rebalancing. Exercises incorporating the Muscle Release Ball can be practiced in as little as 5-10 minutes, often with immediate and remarkable reduction of chronic muscle tension and back compression. With this foundation work under your belt, later Chapters in the book help you to learn how to engage and strengthen your core and apply these principles to the practice of basic Yoga postures and everyday movement. Pathways to a Centered Body is an invaluable guide for Yoga and Pilates students and teachers, personal trainers, dancers and athletes, as well as physical therapists, chiropractors, and somatic practitioners, indeed, anyone who wants to live in their body with greater ease, grace, and stability. With over 108 color photographs accompanied by concise instructions, this manual will be a requisite text for movement training programs worldwide.

Download or read book Improving Ankle and Knee Joint Stability written by Alexandra Milon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First book to present several physical exercises using Balancefit discs aimed to enhance the ankle and knee joint stability, as well as to improve proprioception, Improving Ankle and Knee Joint Stability. Proprioceptive Balancefit Discs Drills is addressed to a more specialised audience (coaches, physical trainers, Physical Education teachers or students). Why Balancefit discs? Mainly, the joint stability can be improved using tools such as Bosu, Wobble Board, balance board etc. But we think that the Balancefit discs (also known as Balance discs, Bobbled Balance Discs, Core Discs, or Stability Discs), in this case, are most appropriate for the drills we proposed. The advantage of the Balancefit discs, from the point of view of an increased effectiveness over the anatomical-physiological and biomechanical characteristics of different motor acts, is that they allow a lot more strains to be put on the muscles and ligaments, regarding the plans and axis of the movements we are trying to train. In comparison with the balance boards and the wobble boards that have a flat, hard foot contact surface, the Balancefit discs strain the plantar surface of the foot right through that mobile and flexible contact area. Hence, the stress found in the ankle joint is not reduced to controlled and limited eversions and inversions, dorsiflexions and plantar flexions, but there are also tendencies to slide back and forward, and all of these movements can be combined. The complexity of the exercises can be directed and controlled also through the degree of inflation of the discs. Another great advantage of using the Balancefit discs is that many of the drills presented in this book can be adapted for a multitude of athletic disciplines, from sportive games to winter sports. Also, we must emphasize that the Balancefit discs can be used in the Physical Education lesson, as well as during any sportive recreational activity, where they can be important and great fun means of developing the coordination and static and dynamic balance, starting with children even as young as four. Many of the drills presented in this book can be coupled with or introduced in Pilates programmes or improving core stability programmes, adapted to the specifics of each sport. All these drills (stimulating proprioception in special conditions - on mobile surfaces, Balancefit, Wobble board, balance board etc.), performed in a particular manner (with eyes closed), can contribute to an increase in the quality of athletic performance, especially during game situations with a high psychological stress (the end of a match, a tie-in, the team/athlete being qualified for a superior phase in a competition, numerical inferiority situations etc.), as well as during situations demanding technical performances in unnatural body positions (unbalances in the air, passes, throws, hitting the ball from a fall determined by a rough action from the opponent etc.).
