Book excerpt: Lewis County, located in far northeastern Kentucky, was formed in 1806 and named for explorer Meriwether Lewis. The county was once teeming with industry as a supplier of finished goods and agricultural products. Historically, the county's proximity to the Ohio River allowed the export of timber and salt, and in the 1800s, railroad transportation made Lewis County an influential source of railroad ties, boat-building materials, and barrels. In later years, the area was most popular for its health resorts, spas, and "sulfur waters," which attracted visitors from as far as New York and Chicago. The images in this volume depict the county's military influence, as Lewis Countians had strong allegiance to the Union during the Civil War. The photographs featured in Images of America: Lewis County have been drawn from the archive of the Vanceburg Depot Museum and from various private collections.

Book excerpt: With only a handful of incorporated villages and seven stoplights, Lewis County is unmistakably rural. Cows continue to outnumber people, and nearly two-thirds of the land remains wooded. Despite its geographical isolation, Lewis County has a colorful history dating back to the 1790s, when the first settlers from New England and France arrived. Drawing on archival images to document life in this section of New York's vast and sparsely populated North Country, Lewis County illustrates the area's rich history with photographs of the people, landmarks, and scenery that have given the various townships their distinctive character. Special attention is paid to the Black River Canal and to the economic mainstays of the region: dairy farming and the forest industry.

Book excerpt: Since the first documented arrival of white men in its borders in 1769, Lewis County has morphed from a howling wilderness known simply as West Augusta, Virginia, to a major player in a hub of interstate highway transportation and a recreational area with a number of tourist destinations. Formed from Harrison County in 1816, Lewis County and its 17,003 citizens represent the best of central West Virginia. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Jackson's Mill, Stonecoal Lake, and Stonewall Jackson Lake define the county by their unique place in history. The county's native sons and daughters have been industrialists, U.S. senators, Civil War generals, and nationally recognized athletes. They have been the fabric that makes America the great country it is today: the ordinary, everyday citizen who lives life to its fullest potential while enduring whatever struggle fate sets before them.
