Book excerpt: First published in 1983, this book represents an effort to lay the groundwork for a general approach to lexical semantics that pays heed to the needs of a theory of discourse interpretation, a theory of compositional semantics, and a theory of lexical rules. The first chapter proposes a basic framework in which to undertake lexical description and a lexical semantic analogue to the classical syntactic distinction between subcategorized for complement and adjunct. This apparatus for lexical description is expanded in the second chapter. A theory of the semantics of nuclear terms along with a proposed implementation is presented in chapter three. The fourth chapter argues that a number of regular, semantically governed valence alternations could be captured in frame representations that give rise to various kinds of realisation options. The final chapter examines interaction of these phenomena with a general account of prediction or control along with the general framework of lexical representation.

The book comprises two theoretical contributions and a number of empirical ones. One theoretical paper discusses several possible motivations for a morphologically organised mental lexicon (like the economy of representation view, and the efficiency of processing view), and lays out the weaknesses that are associated with some of these motivations. The other theoretical paper offers an interactive-activation reinterpretation of the findings that were originally reported within the lexical search framework. The empirical papers together cover a relatively broad array of language types and mainly deal with visual word recognition in normals in the context of lexical morphology (derived and compound words). Evidence is reported on the function of stems and affixes as processing units in prefixed and suffixed derivations. The role of semantic transparency in the lexical representation of compounds is studied, as is the effect of orthographic ambiguity on the parsing of novel compounds. The inflection-derivational distinction is approached in the context of Finnish, a highly agglutinative language with much richer morphology than the languages usually studied in psycholinguistic experiments on polymorphemic words. Two other contributions also approach the study object in the context of relatively uncharted domains: one presents data on Chinese, a language which uses a different script-type (logographic) from the languages that are usually studied (alphabetic script), and another one presents data on language production.

Book excerpt: This thesis develops the model of Lexical Phonology, in which a subset of phonological rules applies in the lexicon as part of the word formation component. Phonological rules apply after every morphological operation, to the output of which morphological operations may apply once again. The lexicon consists of ordered lexical strata which function as the domains of application Of these phonological and morphological rules. This model eliminates the need for the use of distinct boundary symbols by allowing phonological rules to have direct access to morphological information, and imposes severe restrictions on the class of possible grammars. The model of Lexical Phonology yields three levels of phonological representation, namely, the underlying, the lexical, and the phonetic. The lexical level of representation is the output of the lexical rule applications, which is also the input to lexical insertion. it is shown that several interesting formal and psychological properties converge on this level. Pauses are assigned to lexical representations after lexical insertion, and therefore, lexical rule applications are unaffected by pauses, while post lexical rule applications are blocked by intervening pauses. Speakers' judgments on the 'sameness' and 'distinctness' of speech sounds are based on lexical representations. Secret code languages, such as Pig Latin and the Alb language, take the lexical representation as the input, and so do speech errors which permute phonological segments. It is suggested that the lexical level may also have interesting consequences for theories of speech acquisition, speech recognition, and speech production.
