Book Leucocratic Gabbroic Xenoliths from Hual lai Volcano Hawai i

Download or read book Leucocratic Gabbroic Xenoliths from Hual lai Volcano Hawai i written by Patrick J. Shamberger and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magma storage conditions of the distinctive Pu'u Wa'awa'a (PWW) trachyte eruption on HuaHilai Volcano remain poorly understood. New mineral and whole-rock compositional data of plutonic nodules with similar evolved alkaline geochemical affinities may constrain these conditions. These advances offer insight into changes in magma storage depth during the shield to post-shield transition at HuaHilai Volcano. Summit xenoliths compose three suites: (1) chilled alkalic liquids and alkali-feldspar bearing gabbro cumulates, (2) sub-alkaline gabbro-norite cumulates, and (3) diverse xenoliths not apparently related to groups (1) or (2). Series (1) xenoliths may be related to the PWW trachyte. Thermodynamic models of clinopyroxene and feldspar compositions, fractionating assemblages inferred from bulk major and trace element compositions, and normative compositions of intermediate melts all indicate that the trachyte formed at pressures -3-7 kbar. This pressure range suggests reservoir depths significantly deeper than previous models of the PWW trachyte magma chamber and may indicate a shift to deeper magma storage at the onset of the post-shield stage. Finegrained dioritic xenoliths of series (1), which may approximate original liquid compositions, are all mildly silica-saturated, suggesting that the PWW trachyte fractionated from a hypersthene-normative alkalic or transitional parent, consistent with Pb isotopic evidence. Bulk compositions of these xenoliths partially fill the gap between erupted alkalic basalts (MgO >4 wt%, Si0249 wt%) and trachytes (MgO

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawaiian Volcanoes, From Source to Surface is the outcome of an AGU Chapman Conference held on the Island of Hawai‘i in August 2012. As such, this monograph contains a diversity of research results that highlight the current understanding of how Hawaiian volcanoes work and point out fundamental questions requiring additional exploration. Volume highlights include: Studies that span a range of depths within Earth, from the deep mantle to the atmosphere Methods that cross the disciplines of geochemistry, geology, and geophysics to address issues of fundamental importance to Hawai‘i’s volcanoes Data for use in comparisons with other volcanoes, which can benefit from, and contribute to, a better understanding of Hawai‘i Discussions of the current issues that need to be addressed for a better understanding of Hawaiian volcanism Hawaiian Volcanoes, From Source to Surface will be a valuable resource not only for researchers studying basaltic volcanism and scientists generally interested in volcanoes, but also students beginning their careers in geosciences. This volume will also be of great interest to igneous petrologists, geochemists, and geophysicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawaiian Volcanoes, written by Clarence E. Dutton as part of the 1883 Annual Report of the U.S. Geological Survey, is the first comprehensive study of volcanism in Hawai‘i. In addition to being of both scientific and historical interest today, it is a fine example of natural history writing. It takes the form of an entrancing nineteenth-century "roadside geology" of the Big Island and much of Maui, combining Dutton's clear, elegant writing style with his eye for color and line and meticulously accurate observations of Hawai‘i's people and landscape, as well as its geological phenomena. A new foreword discusses the importance of Dutton's ground-breaking report and its influence on subsequent research on Hawai‘i's volcanoes. The present volume also includes a colorful biographical sketch of Dutton, a discussion of his assignment to Hawai‘i, and a list of his principal writings.

Book Origins and Evolution of Life

Download or read book Origins and Evolution of Life written by Muriel Gargaud and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devoted to exploring questions about the origin and evolution of life in our Universe, this highly interdisciplinary book brings together a broad array of scientists. Thirty chapters assembled in eight major sections convey the knowledge accumulated and the richness of the debates generated by this challenging theme. The text explores the latest research on the conditions and processes that led to the emergence of life on Earth and, by extension, perhaps on other planetary bodies. Diverse sources of knowledge are integrated, from astronomical and geophysical data, to the role of water, the origin of minimal life properties and the oldest traces of biological activity on our planet. This text will not only appeal to graduate students but to the large body of scientists interested in the challenges presented by the origin of life, its evolution, and its possible existence beyond Earth.
