Book Writings by Pre Revolutionary French Women

Download or read book Writings by Pre Revolutionary French Women written by Colette H. Winn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume covers 30 Pre-Revolutionary French women, providing a representative sampling of their manifold and varied contributions to intellectual and cultural history. This volume is unique in its grouping of essentially French writers from the Pre-Revolutionary period. The authors included here range from those prominent because of their social position or literary fame, to those slowly becoming part of a new canon of Old Regime women writers - authors whose works were known to their contemporaries but who have slipped into near invisibility in the following centuries until their recent rediscovery and reassessment.

Book Sentimental Figures of Empire in Eighteenth Century Britain and France

Download or read book Sentimental Figures of Empire in Eighteenth Century Britain and France written by Lynn Festa and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-10-15 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious and original study, Lynn Festa examines how and why sentimental fiction became one of the primary ways of representing British and French relations with colonial populations in the eighteenth century. Drawing from novels, poetry, travel narratives, commerce manuals, and philosophical writings, Festa shows how sentimentality shaped communal and personal assertions of identity in an age of empire. Read in isolation, sentimental texts can be made to tell a simple story about the emergence of the modern psychological self. Placed in conversation with empire, however, sentimentality invites both psychological and cultural readings of the encounter between self and other. Sentimental texts, Festa claims, enabled readers to create powerful imagined relations to distant people. Yet these emotional bonds simultaneously threatened the boundaries between self and other, civilized and savage, colonizer and colonized. Festa argues that sentimental tropes and figures allowed readers to feel for others, while maintaining the particularity of the individual self. Sentimental identification thus operated as a form of differentiation as well as consolidation. Festa contends that global reach increasingly outstripped imaginative grasp during this era. Sentimentality became an important tool for writers on empire, allowing conquest to be portrayed as commerce and scenes of violence and exploitation to be converted into displays of benevolence and pity. Above all, sentimental texts used emotion as an important form of social and cultural distinction, as the attribution of sentience and feeling helped to define who would be recognized as human.

Contents include: “The Romantic Feeling”, “Notes to Chapter I”, “The Publishers and the Circulating Libraries”, “Notes to Chapter II”, “Influences from Abroad”, “Notes to Chapter III”, “Historical Gothic”, “Notes to Chapters IV”, “Matthew Gregory Lewis”, etc. Other notable works by this author include: “A Popular History of Witchcraft” (1937), “Witchcraft and Black Magic” (1946), and “The Physical Phenomena of Mysticism” (1947). Book The David Hume Library

Download or read book The David Hume Library written by David Fate Norton and published by Oak Knoll Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David Hume, well-known as a philosophy and historian, was also an avid reader and collector of books. Unfortunately, no catalogue of his library survives. The Nortons have traced the path of Hume's books to his brother and sister, then to his nephew, David Hume the younger (later Baron Hume), and finally to Thomas Stevenson, an Edinburgh bookseller. Working from manuscript sources, including an 1840 catalogue of Baron Hume's library, as well as letters to Hume, the authors identify several hundred titles that belonged, or probably belonged, to Hume. Included among these are corrected copies of Hume's own works; a wide range of items presented to him by such friends or acquaintances as Buffon, Burke, D'Alembert, Diderot, Gibbon, D'Hollbach, Price, Priestley, Rousseau, Adam Smith, and Horace Walpole; and many now obscure works that may have helped to form the views of one of Britain's most important writers."--
