Book excerpt: The accession of William Wake (1657-1737) to the primacy of Great Britain in 1716 was hailed by Protestants all over Europe. Lutheran and Reformed theologians came to see Wake not only as the wisest choice the Anglican Church could have made but also as another great apostle of Christian unity. Gallican and Jansenist theologians also were impressed by Wake's interest in ecumenical discussions. Their dissatisfaction with factional disputes within the Church in France and their consequent openness to the Anglican view of church history and basic theology are reflected in this critical edition of more than a thousand letters exchanged with Wake over a period of fifteen years. But this was an age when letters were probably the most reliable source of current news. It is therefore not surprising that they reflect an era in the social, economic, political and religious life of Western Europe deeply marked by controversy; for this was also the age of Voltaire, Montesquieu, Ellies Dupin and Pierre-François Le Courayer, the embattled librarian of the abbey of Sainte-Geneviève.

Book excerpt: In Virgil's third Eclogue, Palaemon concludes the poetry competition between Menalcas and Damoetas by saying that he cannot choose between them, a judgment that is emblematic of the contest between Neo-Latin and vernacular poetry in Renaissance France. Both forms of poetry draw on similar roots, both are equally accomplished, and the contest between them is largely amicable. The Judgment of Palaement illustrates the almost symbiotic relationship between Renaissance Latin and French poetry, while exploring poets' motivation for choosing one language over another, the different challenges each form of writing involved, and the extent of the collaboration between different language communities. It focuses on some of the major writers of the period, as well as less known ones, and on genres specific to humanist poetry. It shows that composing in Latin was often considered more natural than writing in the vernacular, at a time when many Frenchmen's mother tongue was a non-standard French dialect or distinct language. This book redresses this, providing an edition and translation of depositions of heresy suspects interrogated in Toulouse 1273-82, preserved in a copy of 1669. The book’s introduction investigates the history and reliability of this copy, and, together with the edition, illuminates the inquisitors and scribes who produced the original register. The edited text shows a Cathar hierarchy in exile in Italy, a Cathar revival in Languedoc, and its destruction by a re-launched inquisition. Inquisitors’ questioning led to depositions which are extraordinarily colourful and lively, and in this they anticipate the circumstantial detail of the early fourteenth century depositions upon which Le Roy Ladurie’s famous Montaillou was based.
