Book Letters from the Battle of Waterloo

Download or read book Letters from the Battle of Waterloo written by Gareth Glover and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waterloo is probably the most famous battle in military history. Thousands of books have been written on the subject but mysteries remain and controversy abounds.By presenting more than 200 previously unpublished accounts by Allied officers who fought at the battle, this collection goes right back to the primary source material. In the letters the Allied officers recount where they were and what they saw. Gareth Glover has provided historical background information but lets the officers speak for themselves as they reveal exactly what happened in June 1815.Originally sent to, and at the request of, Captain W Siborne, then in the process of building his famous model of the battle, these letters have remained unread in the Siborne papers in the British Library. A small selection was published in Waterloo Letters in 1891 but much of vast historical significance did not see the light then and has remained inaccessible until now. Glover now presents this remarkable collection which includes letters here by Major Baring, George Bowles, Edward Whinyates, John Gurwood and Edward Cotton as well as letters by Hanoverian and King's German Legion officers. This is a veritable treasure trove of material on the battle and one which will mean that every historian's view of the battle will need correcting.

Book The Iberian and Waterloo Campaigns

Download or read book The Iberian and Waterloo Campaigns written by S. Monick and published by . This book was released on 2002-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book first appeared with the unweildy title Letters from Portugal, Spain and France during The Memorable Campaigns of 1811,1812, & 1813; and from Belgium and France in the Year 1815. By a British Officer. James Hope s career began in July 1809 as a Volunteer in the 2nd Battalion the 92nd Highland Regiment of Foot, in which he served in the Walcheren expedition to Holland. In September 1811, now an officer, he was sent to Portugal with a draft for the 1st Battalion with instructions he should return to the 2nd Battalion once he had completed his task. The 1st Battalion, however, was short of officers and kept him temporarily; as a result he served for over two years in the Peninsula. He was present at several battles - Arroyo del Molino (Arroyo Molinos) in October 1811 where the French lost some 2,000 to the British 100; Almarez (May 1812), Alba de Torres (Nov 1812), Vittoria (June 1813), the Maya Pass (July 1813) where he was wounded in the head, and finally Nivelle (November 1813). The following month he was at last released from service with the 1st Battalion and went home to rejoin the 2nd Battalion. In 1814 the battalion was disbanded and Hope went back to the 1st Battalion which he accompanied to Flanders in May 1815. He fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo and both these battles are vividly described, especially the battlefield scenes after Waterloo. Hope s record is contained in a series of letters to a fellow officer, and as they were written very shortly after the events they describe, they create an immediate impact. There is a lengthy, comprehensive and instructive introduction by Stanley Monick, the editor. As well as discussing the function of letters in the early 19th century, Monick analyse the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns. Monick has also compiled a useful index, which are usually lacking in the originals and reprints of publications of this nature. A must for Napoleonic specialists.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 100 maps of the actions, engagements and battles of the entire Peninsular War. “A full and vivid account of the Peninsula War and the Waterloo campaign as they happened in some 180 letters to his family written by Col. Frazer, commander of the Horse Artillery in both conflicts. The writer of these letters, Colonel Sir Augustus Simon Frazer, K.C.B, was born in September 1776 and a month before his fourteenth birthday he was admitted as a Gentleman Cadet into the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich... Promoted Major in June 1811 he went to the Peninsula in November 1812, and it is from this date that the letters begin. In April 1813 Frazer was appointed to command the Horse Artillery of the army and as such saw action at Salamanca, Osma, Vitoria, St Sebastian, the crossings of the Bidassoa, Nive and Adour. He was severely wounded at the siege of Bayonne on 27 February 1814 but was back for the final battle of Toulouse in April which brought hostilities against the French to a close. When war with France broke out again on Napoleon’s escape from Elba Sir Augustus joined the allied army in Flanders, under the Duke of Wellington, in March 1815 and resumed command of the Horse Artillery, the post he held during the battle of Waterloo. On return to England he was appointed commander HQ RHA, Woolwich until promoted Colonel in January 1825. Frazer was a prolific letter writer and the letters contained in this book were written to his wife, Lady Emma Frazer (whom he married in 1809) and to his wife’s sister and her husband, Major and Mrs Moore. They give a fascinating account of the stirring events of the time. 140 of them were written during the Peninsular campaign and a further 41 during the Waterloo campaign. They describe events literally as they occurred.”-Print ed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waterloo Letters: A Selection From Original and Hitherto Unpublished Letters Bearing on the Operations of the 16th, 17th, and 18th June, 1815, by Officers Who Served in the Campaign When my father, the late Captain William Siborne, Unattached, was engaged in the construction of his Model of the Battle of Waterloo, he was authorised by the General Commanding-in-Chief - Lord Hill - to issue a Circular Letter to the several surviving Officers of the Battle who might be in a position to afford him the information necessary for the completion of his undertaking. Copies of this letter, and of the plan which accompanied it (on one half the original scale), are annexed. A great number of letters were sent to him in reply, and subsequently, when writing his History of the Campaign, he received many additional letters and memoranda relating, not only to the precise period of the Battle represented on the Model, but also to the operations and incidents of the Campaign generally. These letters were written to Captain Siborne with the knowledge that the information contained in them would be conveyed to the public. The greater number of the letters, amounting to several hundreds, are still in my possession, and as the 75th anniversary of the Battle occurred last year, and general attention has been redirected to that great event, I have thought that the publication of a selected portion of them might be of interest, not only to the Army, particularly to those Regiments or Corps which took part in the Campaign, but also to the public generally. Many families and individuals will here find recorded the original accounts given by relatives who served in the Waterloo Campaign of what they experienced and of the parts which they played in it.
