Book The Selected Papers of Jane Addams

Download or read book The Selected Papers of Jane Addams written by Mary Lynn Bryan and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a void in Jane Addams scholarship, this first volume of The Selected Papers of Jane Addams collects extant documents from the formative years of the major American historical figure, intellectual, social activist, and author. Documenting the early development of Addams's social principles, the documents reveal the leadership skills that led her into a life of public commitment. For all her public compassion and visibility as an outspoken pacifist, Progressive reformer, and founder of Hull-House, Addams was an intensely private person who revealed her personal side only to family and close friends. Drawing on letters, diaries, and other writings from her childhood in Cedarville, Illinois, and her education at the Rockford Female Seminary, this volume provides heretofore unavailable insight into her developing ideas, educational experiences, and personal relationships. More than just biographical records, The Selected Papers of Jane Addams defines the era in which Addams lived. Unique yet representative of the spiritual ideals and political sensibilities of post-Civil War women and society, Addams's lesser-known, personal writings are necessary reading for scholars and historians. The volume explores important themes, including the migration of families westward, the first generation of college women, and the religious and domestic lives of nineteenth-century Americans. The editors' rich annotation of individuals and events featured in the documents and appendix of biographical profiles represent a trove of primary research and place the documents in historical context.

Book The Crosswicks Journals

Download or read book The Crosswicks Journals written by Madeleine L'Engle and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author of A Wrinkle in Time takes an introspective look at her life and muses on creativity in these four memoirs. Set against the lush backdrop of Crosswicks, Madeleine L’Engle’s family farmhouse in rural Connecticut, this series of memoirs reveals the complexity behind the beloved author whose works have long been cherished by children and adults alike. A Circle of Quiet: In a deeply personal account, L’Engle shares her journey to find balance between her career as an author and her responsibilities as a wife, mother, teacher, and Christian. The Summer of the Great-Grandmother: Four generations of family have gathered at Crosswicks to care for L’Engle’s ninety-year-old mother, whose health is rapidly declining and whose once astute mind is slipping into senility. L’Engle takes an unflinching look at diminishment and death, all the while celebrating the wonder of life and the bonds between mothers and daughters. The Irrational Season: Exploring the intersection of science and religion, L’Engle uncovers how her spiritual convictions inform and enrich the everyday. The memoir follows the liturgical year from one Advent to the next, with L’Engle’s reflections on the changing seasons in her own life as a writer, wife, mother, and global citizen. Two-Part Invention: L’Engle beautifully evokes the life she and her husband, actor Hugh Franklin, built and the family they cherished. Beginning with their very different childhoods, their life in New York City in the 1940s, and their years spent raising their children at Crosswicks, this is L’Engle’s most personal work yet. Offering a new perspective into her writing and life and how the two inform each other, the National Book Award–winning author explores the meanings behind motherhood, marriage, and faith.

Book excerpt: Sergei Yesenin was a Russian poet who, in 1925, hanged himself after writing his farewell poem in blood. Jim Harrison's "correspondence" with Yesenin is an American masterwork. In the early 1970s, Harrison was living in poverty on a hard-scrabble farm, suffering from depression and suicidal urges. He began to write daily prose-poem letters to Yesenin, confiding to his unlikely friend about sex, drunkenness, family, politics - about living for another day. Although "the rope" remained ever present, Harrison listened to his poems: "My year-old daughter's red robe hangs from the doorknob shouting Stop."

Book The Letter

Download or read book The Letter written by Jamuna Devi Advani and published by PartridgeIndia. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I reminisced about my 1940's childhood days in Jiribam, a remote place in the state of Manipur in North East India, I couldn't help but scribble all the memories which came flashing back to me like waves on the ocean. I have written about those memories in stories, in poems and in letter form to my nephew Gojen. Some of the names in my stories are fictitious as I reconstruct the stories, which I heard from my father and Uncle Chandrahas. Also I have included my journal entries since the time I had moved to Canada and later to USA revealing the trials and tribulations I had experienced during that time. Also writing is healing no doubt. Whatever the resentments I had accumulated during my growing up days about my father or any other individual is now gone permanently from my mind and I am at peace. In fact I see the positive sides of all the persons concerned. Hence I would like to encourage others who are in simliar situations, to write and enjoy the healing process.
