Book excerpt: Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, was a high-ranking diplomat and politician during the reigns of George I and George II in eighteenth-century England. Today, Lord Chesterfield is best known for the four hundred or so letters to his son collected and published without his prior knowledge or approval as Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman. Because he had been mostly neglected as a young man, Lord Chesterfield wanted to be present for his son Philip. However, because Philip was illegitimate – the son of Chesterfield and a Dutch governess – his father’s attention came in the form of letters. Beginning in 1737 when Philip was five years old and ending after Philip’s unexpected death at the age of thirty-six, the letters offer honest and often funny advice on everything: art, literature, politics, manners, and how to get ahead in the world. Through these private letters, Lord Chesterfield was grooming his son to overcome the stigma of illegitimacy to rise to a suitably high station.

Book excerpt: Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694- 1773) was a British statesman and a man of letters. His relative James Stanhope, the king's favorite minister, procured for him the place of gentleman of the bedchamber to the Prince of Wales. In spite of his brilliant talents and of the admirable training he received, his life, on the whole, cannot be pronounced a success. Short as it was, Chesterfield's Irish administration was of great service to his country, and is unquestionably that part of his political life which does him most honor. Chesterfield was selfish, calculating and contemptuous; he was not naturally generous, and he practised dissimulation until it became part of his nature. As a politician and statesman, his fame rests on his short but brilliant administration of Ireland. As an author he was a clever essayist and epigrammatist. But he stands or fails by the Letters to his Son (1774) and the Letters to his Godson (1890). The Letters are brilliantly written, full of elegant wisdom, of keen wit, of admirable portrait-painting, of exquisite observation and deduction.

Book excerpt: The proud Lord Chesterfield would have turned in his grave had he known that he was to go down to posterity as a teacher and preacher of the gospel of not grace, but—“the graces, the graces, the graces.” Natural gifts, social status, open opportunities, and his ambition, all conspired to destine him for high statesmanship. If anything was lacking in his qualifications, he had the pluck and good sense to work hard and persistently until the deficiency was made up. Something remained lacking, and not all his consummate mastery of arts could conceal that conspicuous want,—the want of heart. Teacher and preacher he assuredly is, and long will be, yet no thanks are his due from a posterity of the common people whom he so sublimely despised. His pious mission was not to raise the level of the multitude, but to lift a single individual upon a pedestal so high that his lowly origin should not betray itself. That individual was his, Lord Chesterfield’s, illegitimate son, whose inferior blood should be given the true blue hue by concentrating upon him all the externals of aristocratic education.
