Book Letters to Beethoven and Other Correspondence 1824 1828

Download or read book Letters to Beethoven and Other Correspondence 1824 1828 written by Theodore Albrecht and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes present approximately 430 letters and documents written to Beethoven (1770--1827) as well as those written by others (relatives, students, and secretaries) on his behalf. Along with over 70 of Beethoven's own letters discovered since Emily Anderson's three-volume Letters of Beethoven, these documents provide new insights into the composer's personal life. They illuminate his dealings with publishers, other musicians, poets, patrons, relatives, friends, and a wide variety of acquaintances. The documents provide important details about the composition of many works, Beethoven's performance practices, his criticisms of other composers and performers, and his role in the Napoleonic era. Gleaned from more than one hundred publications and collected from autograph sources in libraries and archives in Europe and the United States, these materials have never before appeared between two covers. At least sixty of the letters have never previously been published. Letters to Beethoven and Other Correspondence vastly enlarges accessibility to Beethoven's busy life and the music he made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In accompanying the present edition of the Letters of Ludwig van Beethoven with a few introductory remarks, I at once acknowledge that the compilation of these letters has cost me no slight sacrifices. I must also, however, mention that an unexpected Christmas donation, generously bestowed on me with a view to further my efforts to promote the science of music, enabled me to undertake one of the journeys necessary for my purpose, and also to complete the revision of the Letters and of the press, in the milder air and repose of a country residence, long since recommended to me for the restoration of my health, undermined by overwork. That, in spite of every effort, I have not succeeded in seeing the original of each letter, or even discovering the place where it exists, may well be excused, taking into consideration the slender capabilities of an individual, and the astonishing manner in which Beethoven's Letters are dispersed all over the world. At the same time, I must state that not only have the hitherto inaccessible treasures of Anton Schindler's "Beethoven's Nachlass" been placed at my disposal, but also other letters from private sources, owing to various happy chances, and the kindness and complaisance of collectors of autographs. I know better, however, than most people--being in a position to do so--that in the present work there can be no pretension to any thing approaching to a complete collection of Beethoven's Letters. The master, so fond of writing, though he often rather amusingly accuses himself of being a lazy correspondent, may very probably have sent forth at least double the amount of the letters here given, and there is no doubt whatever that a much larger number are still extant in the originals. The only thing that can be done at this moment, however, is to make the attempt to bring to light, at all events, the letters that could be discovered in Germany. The mass of those which I gradually accumulated, and now offer to the public (with the exception of some insignificant notes), appeared to me sufficiently numerous and important to interest the world, and also to form a substantial nucleus for any letters that may hereafter be discovered. On the other hand, as many of Beethoven's Letters slumber in foreign lands, especially in the unapproachable cabinets of curiosities belonging to various close-fisted English collectors, an entire edition of the correspondence could only be effected by a most disproportionate outlay of time and expense.

Book excerpt: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a prolific letter writer. Often written in great haste - he regularly signed off 'in der Eile' - his correspondence allows us to follow his anxieties and preoccupations. From his first letter, written at the age of thirteen, wherein he declared his lifelong commitment to the craft of music, through the poignant 'Heiligenstadt Testament', up to the final codicil to his will, these documents reveal the human figure behind some of the greatest music ever written. In this two-volume English translation of 1909, John South Shedlock (1843-1919) retains as far as possible the idiosyncratic and error-ridden texts as written by the great composer. Volume 2 finds Beethoven concerned over his financial situation and the poor printing of his music, and includes the final codicil to his will, written just three days before his death.

Book Beethoven s Immortal Beloved

Download or read book Beethoven s Immortal Beloved written by Edward Walden and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1812, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote three letters to an unnamed woman, whom he called "Immortal Beloved." The letters were discovered after Beethoven's death and ever since their discovery, there has been speculation regarding whom that Immortal Beloved might have been. In Beethoven's Immortal Beloved: Solving the Mystery, Edward Walden carefully and meticulously presents his case that the woman who Beethoven loved was Bettina Brentano, an artistic and talented musician in her own right. Setting the foundation for his argument, Walden begins the book with a general historical and sequential narrative that interweaves the lives of the three principle protagonists: Beethoven, the writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Bettina Brentano. Walden explores in detail the key elements of the factual narrative and shows how those elements support his claim that Bettina was the Immortal Beloved. In addition, Walden addresses the attacks other Beethoven scholars have made against Bettina and reveals how such attacks were mistaken or unjustified. Thoroughly and rigorously researched, yet presented in a clear and engaging style, Beethoven's Immortal Beloved will appeal to Beethoven scholars, music lovers, and general readers alike, who will be captivated by the solving of this fascinating mystery.

This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven's correspondences reveal much about his personality, inner struggles, and love of music. This edition appends the musical staves appended by the great composer to his letters. The second volume of Beethoven's letters begin with the composer in maturity. In these later years, several of his most accomplished and beautiful musical works were completed. It is clear from these written correspondences that music occupies a greater place in Beethoven's life; more frequently, he appends samples of and discusses musical phrasing and notation, giving readers insight into his methods of composition. Although Beethoven concealed his increasing deafness for years, it eventually became public knowledge. His ability to compose beautiful music was however undiminished, and demonstrated in concerts around Europe. Thought remarkable by the public, Beethoven nevertheless lived in quite modest circumstances, but felt deep appreciation for the acclaim with which he was held by various orchestral and philharmonic societies. In personal matters, Beethoven demonstrates great affection for his nephew Carl, whom he had won custody in the courts. However, the letters also reveal an irascible and controlling side to the composer: insistent that his nephew - whom he came to view as a son - be musically trained, the news that Carl's musical talents are negligible is a blow. Carl's subsequent intention to pursue a military career strains their relationship further. Despite these trials, Beethoven had the support of friends until the very end; his illness worsening, he was able to borrow money to pay for care, but it soon became clear he was on his deathbed. The great composer's final words comprise a short will, in which his estate is bequeathed to Carl. Ludwig van Beethoven died the next day, as a thunderstorm raged outside his apartment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beethoven's Letters, Vol. 1 of 2: 1790 1826, From the Collection of Dr. Ludwig Nohl; Also His Letters to the Archduke Rudolph, Cardinal-Archbishop of Olmutz, K. W., From the Collection of Dr. Ludwig Ritter Von Köchel Since undertaking the translation of Dr. Ludwig Nohl's valuable edition of 'Beethoven's Letters,' an additional collection has been published by Dr. Ludwig Ritter von Köchel, consisting of many interesting letters addressed by Beethoven to his illustrious pupil, H. R. H. the Archduke Rudolph, Cardinal-Archbishop of Olmütz. These I have inserted in chronological order, and marked with the letter K., in order to distinguish them from the correspondence edited by Dr. Nohl. I have only omitted a few brief notes, consisting merely of apologies for non-attendance on the Archduke. The artistic value of these newly discovered treasures will no doubt be as highly appreciated in this country as in the great maestro's fatherland.
