Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to Presbyterians, on the Present Crisis in the Presbyterian Church in the United States The pious founders of these churches were warm ly attached to the Westminster Confession of Faith, and to the Presbyterian form of ecclesiastical go vernment. To these they had been accustomed from their youth, and deemed them important to the edi fication of the body of Christ. On these principles they associated; and to sustain this scriptural system, they virtually pledged themselves to one another and to the church of God. They began to form congre gations on this plan toward the close of the seven teenth century; and in the year 1704, they seem to have constituted the first judicatory, under the name of the Presbytery of Philadelphia. The vows of God are upon you, with a solemnity then only to become more solemn, when, by His grace, you shall have "used the office of a deacon well," and shall be admitted to a higher order of the ministry. Often, I doubt not, under an almost overwhelming consciousness of the weakness of self, you have asked, "Who is sufficient for these things?" And your strength and comfort have been found in this: "My strength is made perfect in weakness." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth Advocated: In Letters, Addressed to the Presbyterians In the Christian Repository, a paper published in Wilmington, Delaware, a writer under the signature of Paul, has attacked the religious society of Friends. He has been answered by a member of that society, under the title of Amicus. After what has been done in our defence, it would seem to be a work of supererogation to add any thing further. But the reader, if he has perused those publications, will perceive that I have here replied to charges, which Amicus from their multiplicity has been obliged to pass over in silence; and when I have taken up the same subjects which Amicus has noticed, I have treated them differently. I do not mean by this to be understood as depreciating the labours of that writer. The ability and temper with which he has managed his side of the controversy, against a very unfair antagonist, will, I think, be generally acknowledged: I do not intend, therefore, to occupy his ground. Be his the task of continuing to expose the sophistry of the author, mine to unfold the character of the man: and whilst Amicus leaves him in his mask, I shall uncover him and present him before the public as a Presbyterian minister. The assault made by this writer, being supported by no kind of evidence, yet seasoned by the coarsest and most virulent abuse, when viewed in the abstract, calls for no further animadversion. But I have been induced to notice it, under a belief that it constitutes an entering wedge, preparatory to a more extensive field of operations, before which all opposition to the ambitious views of a hireling priesthood, is to be prostrated. And I think I shall be able to present to the impartial reader, in these letters, no slender evidence that this belief arises neither from invidious feelings, nor an overweening credulity. Neighbour John, I am not fond of being catechized. I went on the evening of First-day, to the meeting, because I was told that the preacher intended to speak of our deceased friend Jeremy Jones, a neighbour I much esteemed. But in regard to this, I was disappointed. And as to the matter of the young man's discourse, it was well enough; but to tell thee the truth, neighbour, I have a strong dislike of these hireling preachers, Who make a traffic of the truth of God. P. Is not the labourer worthy of his hire? If any man spends his time and strength in serving you, is it not reasonable that you Should support him? F. The Bible tells us that none should be induced to seek the ministry for the love of filthy lucre; that what we receive freely, we should give freely. Book Letters to the Young on Progress in Pudsey

Download or read book Letters to the Young on Progress in Pudsey written by Joseph Lawson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to the Young on Progress in Pudsey: During the Last Sixty Years In compliance with numerous requests, the following letters are issued in a separate form. Being written chiefly for the young people, who, from the nature of their position, cannot be expected to have large pecuniary resources at command, not having had a sufficient length of time to acquire much wealth, we have resolved to publish a cheap edition. Our desire is that they should be read; thinking from our own experience, that the young people might be helped both to appreciate the superior advantages they possess as compared with their forefathers, and be prompted to greater activity on behalf of progress in the future. The following letters extended over twice the length of time that we expected they would do when we began to write them, though we curtailed them as much as possible, compatible with giving the reader something like a general view of the various matters dealt with. We are not conscious of having gone out of our way to deal with debatable matters, but have tried to avoid them as much as possible. One thing however is certain, that those who only read their own side deny themselves of some advantage which reading both sides would give. Were there no difference of opinion amongst mankind, no one could learn anything from his fellow-men, and all social intercourse and progress would be at an end. There is no need for any apology on our part for the order or arrangement of our subject. The various letters were written as the matter presented itself and impressed us at the time, and it has not been deemed desirable to alter them in that respect, though some slight alterations and corrections have been made. Hatfield, in Review of Two Lectures Against Universalism: Delivered by Him in the Seventh Presbyterian Church, Broom Street, on Sunday Evenings, January 5th and 12th While you did not conceal from all your hearers the motives which induced you to treat on the subject of your lecture at this particular time, you did not keep from their view another fact well expressed by Steele The more restless and opiniated the partisan, whether in religion or politics, the more ready he is to deal in invective. I intend no incivility or unkind ness, when I remind you that it was to a people close ly infolded in the robe of self-righteousness, and their minds grossly darkened by prejudice, to whom the words were applied with the majesty of truth Ye are of your father the devil. Whether the sect called Universalists, whom you unblushingly charge with throwing off from young men all moral principle and responsibility, sustains the character just alluded to, remains to be proved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Baldwin News Letter, Vol. 1: April, 1930 Institutions of learning differ not so essentially in their buildings or endowments, in their physical equipment or courses of study, as in the men and women who have shaped their character and determined their spirit, who have moulded their inner life. They are rich and great only. As great personalities have lived within their walls and have influenced and guided the young lives that have touched their own. In the historic little city of Staunton, guarded by the noble mountains that flank the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, stands Mary Baldwin College, an institution around which for well - nigh a century have gathered some of the richest social and cultural traditions of Virginia and the old South, and whose history from its foundation has been linked with the high intellectual and spiritual ideals of the Southern Presbyterian Church. As Augusta Female Seminary it was established in 1842 by a consecrated Presbyterian minister, Rev. Rufus Bailey, who to quote the tribute of a biographer, was a man of superior ability, who could not have resided anywhere without being felt as a power in the community. Supported by a group of Presbyterian ministers and laymen, he opened the Seminary with the avowed purpose to afford the means of a thorough literary and religious education to the female youth of this part of the country. In 1843 the first permanent building was erected on a lot belonging to the Presbyterian church, with a guarantee from the church trustees that the seminary should have possession in perpetuity of the said building, provided always that the institution be directed by a board of which three - fourths should be ministers or members of the Old School Presbyterian Church. In 1849, after seven years of valued service, Mr. Bailey resigned his connection with the seminary. His portrait hangs today in the parlor of Mary Baldwin College. Book Letters on God and Letters to a Young Woman

Download or read book Letters on God and Letters to a Young Woman written by Rainer Maria Rilke and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) was an avid letter writer, and more than seven thousand of his letters have survived. The best-known collection today is Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, first published in 1929. Two other letter collections appeared around the same time and gained high acclaim among readers yet are virtually unknown today. They are Letters to a Young Woman (1930) and Letters on God (1933). With this volume, Annemarie S. Kidder makes available to an English-speaking audience two of the earliest collections of Rilke letters published after his death. The thematic collection On God-- here published in English for the first time--contains two letters by Rilke, the first an actual letter written during World War I, in 1915 in Munich, the second a fictional one composed after the war, in 1922 at Muzot, in Switzerland. In these letters, Rilke builds on the mystical view of God conceived of in The Book of Hours, but he moves beyond it, demonstrating a unique vision of God and Christ, the church and religious experience, friendship and death. The collection Letters to a Young Woman comprises nine of Rilke's letters, written to a young admirer, Lisa Heise, over the course of five years, from 1919 to 1924. Though Rilke and Heise never met, Rilke emerges in these letters as the compassionate listener and patient teacher who with level-headed sensitivity affirms and guides the movements of another person's soul.
