Book Letters to My Grandson

Download or read book Letters to My Grandson written by P.D. Goldsmith and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charming, wise and idiosyncratic series of twelve letters which give advice to the author's grandson on what it means to become a man. The letters cover fundamental, sensitive and profound matters such as the body and the physical world; smoking, alcohol and drugs; healing the body; character; culture; the role in society; the nature of men and women; relationships; sex; family and fatherhood; and religion. The book also reflects on why the unexamined life is not worth living, with the final substantial letter offering a radical approach to the philosophical and spiritual questions that all of us are likely to ask at some point in our lives. Although the book primarily addresses the needs of young men moving towards adulthood, much of its content would be of equal interest to young women. In addition, the book contains a generous appendix with suggested reading, film and music lists. Grandfathers will find this a useful handbook for discussions with grandchildren; parents will get a wider perspective of the problems their children are likely to face and what they are feeling; and if you are a young man, you are lucky indeed to have this book as a companion.

Book excerpt: The author and radio host shares an inspiring collection of letters to his grandson about family, growing up, and living with disability. When his grandson was born, Daniel Gottlieb began writing a series of letters for Sam to read later in life. He planned to cover everything from dealing with your parents and handling bullies to falling in love and coping with death. Ever since a car accident left Daniel quadriplegic, he knew not to take anything for granted. He wrote the letters in case he wasn’t around to see Sam reach adulthood. Then, when Sam was only fourteen months old, he was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disability, a form of autism, and suddenly everything changed. Now the grandfather and grandson were bound by something more: a disability. And Daniel’s special understanding of what that means became invaluable. Letters to Sam is a lovingly written, emotionally gripping book that offers unique—and universal—insights into what it means to be human.

Book Letter to a Great Grandson

Download or read book Letter to a Great Grandson written by Hugh Downs and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ''When you are a great grandfather you will experience something so much more powerful and meaningful than being a father or a grandfather, that you will look at the march of generations with new eyes.'' When his great-grandson Alexander was born in 2002, Hugh Downs suddenly gained a rare perspective on the world -- he had seen the evolution of American culture through five generations (his parents', his own, his children's, his grandchildren's, and now his great-grandson's). Once Downs realized the extraordinary amount of love he experienced for his brand new descendent, as well as the profound connection he felt between them, he decided to write him a letter, to be read at different stages of Alexander's life. Letter to A Great Grandson offers wisdom, advice, and speculation about how life was, how life is, and how life may be in the future. As one of America's most trusted commentators, Downs is a grandfather figure to many, and his words will resonate with readers everywhere, at any age. Letter to A Great Grandson presents a completely new system for categorizing life. Downs has divided it into seventeen stages, ranging from infant, to post-puberty minor, to "young old," to ancient, and everything in between. This unique organization allows him to offer specific thoughts on each stage, making the book pertinent to all age levels, ideal for reading over and over again during different periods in life. Downs discusses the common problems and achievements in each stage, and along the way offers his characteristically erudite and conversational thoughts on relationships, science, sex, education, careers, literature, and life in general. He also includes touching tidbits from his own childhood, and those of his family, illustrating that sometimes one must look back, in order to look forward. Though Letter to A Great Grandson is not a how-to book, it does teach by example. It stresses the importance and joy of sharing your thoughts and feelings with the children in your life, and of actively maintaining family connections -- before it is too late. This makes it a wonderful model for great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents alike. Considering the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren (and great-grandparents and great-grandchildren), surprisingly few books address this important relationship. When this vital, n0 heartwarming subject matter is combined with Hugh Downs's unique wisdom, wit, and warmth, the result is a book that will truly be treasured.

Book Letters To My Grandchildren

Download or read book Letters To My Grandchildren written by Tony Benn and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a diarist I have chronicled the time through which I have lived in meticulous detail: but all that is history. What matters now is the future for those who will live through it. The past is the past but there may be lessons to be learned which could help the next generation to avoid mistakes their parents and grandparents made. Certainly at my age I have learned an enormous amount from the study of history - not so much from the political leaders of the time but from those who struggled for justice and explained the world in a way that shows the continuity of history and has inspired me to do my work. Normality for any individual is what the world is like on the day they are born. The normality of the young is wholly different from the normality of their grandparents. It is the disentangling of the real questions from the day to day business of politics that may make sense for those who take up the task as they will do. Every generation has to fight the same battles as their ancestors had to fight, again and again, for there is no final victory and no final defeat. Two flames have burned from the beginning of time - the flame of anger against injustice and the flame of hope. If this book serves its purpose it will fan both flames.

Book Love Letters from Fathers

Download or read book Love Letters from Fathers written by HRI and published by 맨트립(Mantrip). This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remember the fathers from Chosun Dynasty who wrote letters out of love and worry for their children. The gentlemen from Chosun such as Lee Hwang, Yoo Sung-ryong and Park Ji-won - they were "fathers" before they were scholars, officers and writers. Through the letters to their sons, we aim to explore their life style and the value systems, including education methods, studying skills and attitudes towards others. We can also learn the distinctive personalities of the fathers who taught their children according to their personalities, strengths and weaknesses. Who could possible know a person better than his or her parents? We will read the letters of the great men from Chosun, who were "fathers" before they were scholars, officers and writers. What kind of letter did Lee Hwang (Toegye, 1501-1570), scholar and civil servant from the mid-Chosun era, send to his son who had lost confidence and have given up the state exam? A writer from the mid-Chosun era, Baek Kwang-hun (Okbong, 1537-1582) was relieved to find out his two sons safely entered into the exam station, but still expressed his nervousness in his letters. The father who lived in Seoul alone, working as one low officer to another, worries more and more about his wife at home and the unreliable children. Yoo Sung-ryong (Seoae, 1542-1607), a civil servant in the mid-Chosun era, writes about his education experience for his children who had lost the time to study due to household problems and wars. He is sorry about the lost time when every second is precious for young people and kindly teaches his children about studying with curiosity and preciseness. Park Ji-won (Yonam, 1737-1805), a writer from the lat Chosun period, expresses his joy about his newborn grandson by writing that he can almost hear the baby's cry from the paper. He also talks about how to take care of the sick daughter-in-law after childbirth. Ahn Jung-bok (Sunam, 1712-1805), a scholar in the late Chosun period, writes a letter to his 10-year-old young son who is on his way to the bride's house ty marry, worrying that he might make mistakes. Park Je-ga (Chojung, 1750-1805), a civil servant during the late Chosun period, sends letters to his son about every detail of his exile life. Even within the complicated situation, the love and longing for his family can be easily traced in the letters. The letter he first sent to his three sons as soon as he arrived at the exile place, starts with "Don't worry". Kim Jung-hee (Chusa, 1786-1856), a scholar and artist from the late Chosun era, does not lose his interest in objects such as how to write and draw and telling the story of making his own stuffs even in letters to his son. He delivers the heart and advice, as a father proud of a son who asks for advice on writing. Kang Se-hwang (Pyoam, 1713-1791), a civil servant and artist of the late Chosun period, writes a letter to his son about the conversations he had shared with his companions and sons and advice bout his memorial service after death. Lee Sik (Taekdang, 1584-1647), a civil servant from the mid-Chosun era, acknowledges the worries of his son regarding the health of the father and soothes him to stop worrying and take care of himself instead. Also, he sends his love by sharing the secrets to accept poverty and to grow minds in an attempt to calm him and guide him to dream big. As a scholar and civil servant during the late Chosun era, Park Se-dang (Seogye, 1629-1703) is proud that his son is trying to read a history book and further writes a letter to teach him how to read history books. Let's listen to the father's voice, reminding his son that reading is "to move the letters on the pile of papers directly into the heart". Lee Hwang leaves a message to his nearly 30-year-old son who is taking off to take the state exam, about how to study and how to behave around friends. He expresses his feelings of not wanting his son to be left out from others because of lacking any sense by just being older than his colleagues. The father who lived in silence far away writes a letter before the son's wedding, imagining the whole family getting together at home. Also, the father who didn't hid his proudness when his son was praised by many teachers including Zhuangzi, reminds the son that no one stays young forever to emphasize doing one's best at everything. The father who excitingly welcomed a grandchild at the age of 60 scolds the son for not letting him know how the baby looks like, through his letter. He also shows that he is slightly hurt of not hearing from the son even after sending the meat and food prepared by himself. The father who was trapped inside Namhansansung during the Manchu war of 1636 communicated with his brothers and children through letters. As his wife grew sick due to worrying and his son became extremely sensitive at any kind of rumors related to the father, he writes about his worries and requests in his letters.
