Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Atonement: In Which a Contrast Is Instituted Between the Doctrine of the Old and of the New School; Or Between the Definite and Indefinite Scheme, on This Important Subject, Addressed to a Brother in the Ministry Until of late years the writer of these Letters scarcely ever, in the course of his public ministry, touched on the extent of the atonement. He was in the habit of explaining its true nature, as a satisfaction for sin; and, on the ground of the infinite merit of the death of Christ, making a free offer of salvation to his hearers; assuring them that whosoever believed would certainly be saved. But lately the extent of the atonement has been made a subject of controversy in the Presbyterian church; and some advocates of the indefinite scheme have represented this as a point of such importance as to allege, that those who do not adopt their views cannot preach the gospel; and indeed their zeal to carry a favourite dogma, has, in the author's opinion, led them to abandon the true nature of the atonement. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to trans late the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. This is the divine mission for which Christ was sent into the world. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. But what is the divine method of saving the world by Christ? Was the salvation of the human race to be purely an intellectual process, requiring only a divine teacher of the truth? Is the production of this great mental, moral, and spiritual change a function of the reason only, when it has been taught by Christ; or was the process of man's salvation to be ethical as well as rational, dc manding a perfect moral law, illustrated by the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Christian Atonement The following Manual is not presented to the public, because the subjects it discusses are not ably set forth by men of deep theological science and ardent piety, but because most of the works published are found in large volumes of systems of theology, and are, therefore, not so accessible to, and sought for by, the Christian public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eternal Atonement Dr. Hitchcock published little in his life-time. His mind was so active, and he was so constantly giving out fresh thoughts to stimulate others, that he left himself little space to revise and elaborate for the press. Be sides, his power was in himself quite as much as in his words. His own personality was so marked, that his presence in the pulpit or the lecture-room, at once commanded attention, and gave emphasis to what he uttered. That personal magnetism cannot be recalled though it remains to all who knew him a most vivid and precious memory. But now that he is gone, we can only read these silent pages, supplying, as best we may, the flashing eye and the thrilling voice.
