Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Cavalry The Letter: on Cavalry of Prince Kraft of Hohenlohe Ingelfingen, of which the following volume contains a translation, formed originally the first part of his papers on the Three Arms they have been included in the present edition as being necessary in order to form a complete tactical series, but the order of suc cession has been changed as, since no new regula tions have appeared in Germany with regard to the movements of Cavalry, it was considered that there was less need to present them at the earliest possible moment, there being no opportunity of comparing them with recent official opinions. Book Letters on Infantry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters on Infantry Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Infantry In the original series, as published in Germany, the following Letters on Infantry formed the second part of the work, those on Cavalry having been the first, and those on Artillery the last in order. This succession having been inverted in the issue of the translations, we shall not be surprised to find that some matters connected with Artillery in combination with Infantry, which have been fully treated in Letters on Artillery, are again, but more cursorily, mentioned in the present volume. Those who are interested in studying the development of the various Arms will find indubitable proof of the value which is attributed in Germany to the opinions of the Author, if they compare the principles laid down by him in these letters, and in those on Artillery, with those which govern the new Drill Regulations for the Infantry and Artillery of the German Empire. I beg to again acknowledge the invariable courtesy and kindness which I have received from the Author and from Messrs. Mittler, the Publishers. Book The Unknown Friends

Download or read book The Unknown Friends written by Chalmers Ingersoll Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unknown Friends: A Civil War Romance; Letters of My Father and My Mother The contents of this book will I hope give the same pleasure to my children which they have given to me, and it is only necessary for me to preface the little volume with a few explanatory notes. As a young girl I remember hearing my mother speak Of her Civil War romance with my father and of certain letters which she had treasured during the years. After my father's death, which occurred on New Year's Day 1 908, mother again referred to the letters and said that she wished me to have them after her death. We had the joy of having her with us alert in mind and body until just before her ninetieth birth day. It was not until a few years later that the letters were discovered in an old japanned box among her effects. They have been printed exactly as written with no attempt at editing, as it is my feeling that any changes on my part would only serve to lessen their worth. AS will be readily observed in reading the letters, there are few of my mother's letters extant and the first three are signed with her sister's name. She makes her own explanation of this. As my father was a cavalry scout it is easy to understand that even the smallest impedimenta were impos'sible and it is only remarkable that mother's first four letters were*6. From the camp and the battlefield Charles Lowell was looking into the quiet beyond the smoke, where he hoped, as a citizen, to work at the harder tasks of helping to solve the prob lems that we face to-day. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Life in Virginia Letters From the Twelfth Vermont Regiment and Personal Experiences of Volunteer, Service in the War for the Union, 1862-63 The letters collected in this little volume are taken from the columns of the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, to which paper they were written by its then junior editor. Describing scenes in army life, sketched currente calamo as they passed before the eye of the writer, with no attempt at writing history and containing little of "blood and thunder," it is not supposed that they will have much interest for the general reader; nor would they be now reprinted except in compliance with repeated requests from a number of my army comrades who have expressed a desire to preserve in permanent form what happened to be almost the only record published at the time (though but a fragmentary and imperfect one) of the service of the regiment to which they belonged. It was a service at best comparatively uneventful, and it is now, after over thirty years of peace, passing into oblivion for most of those who were not directly connected with it. For those who shared it, however, these letters seem still to have interest, and such as they are they are submitted in their present shape without further apology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From America, Vol. 2 of 2 Able, requiring neith'er barracks nor commissariat, and of course beyond all temptation to desert, that it is supposed they will be kept up. A young Irishman from the neighbourhood of K who belongs to one of them, told me that an economical man could save 301. A year after the first outlay. To give you an idea of the cheapness of forage here, I may mention that Captain has con tracted for the supply of his troop with twelve pounds of oats, ten pounds of hay, and eight pounds of straw (the regular cavalry ration) per man at sixpence per day. In Ireland the average is one shilling and sixpence. This frontier was a burrow of sympathisers, and it was close to Philips burgh that Grogan was taken, whose apprehension on the wrong side of the lines made such an out. Book The First New York Lincoln Cavalry

Download or read book The First New York Lincoln Cavalry written by William H. Beach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First New York (Lincoln) Cavalry: From April 19, 1861 to July 7, 1865 The work has been done in intervals of leisure in an almost constant occupation. The material has been taken from the diary of the writer, regularly kept during the entire four years; from letters written home. And from diaries and communications of comrades. For the details of related events all avail able authorities have been freely consulted. It is an attempt to do justice, no more and no less, to worthy men and boys who promptly responded to the Presi dent's first call for volunteers, or who rather anticipated a call for volunteer cavalry. It has not been the purpose to make a conventional or pretentious book. The purpose has been to represent as nearly as possible the men and conditions of the regiment as they actually were. And to narrate events as they actually took place. The career of the regiment was not an unbroken succession of brilliant charges. Nor were the officers and enlisted men all knights without fear and without reproach. But they did good service to the country, and the record of what they did, though imperfectly made up, deserves to be preserved. The minor incidents may not be of historical import ance. Some of them are given as showing the characters of the men, and the nature of their experiences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From a Surgeon of the Civil War Although there are gaps in the order of the correspondence, it is sufficiently connected to tell its own story. John G. Perry of Boston, Mass., entered Harvard College in 1858, bearing with him a very youthful attachment; and in the undoubting judgment of youth, he and I, but boy and girl, in light-hearted gayety strolled one evening in the moonlight to consider the unsupportable length of time before living our lives together. First the present college term; then the Medical School and hospital service after, for even in childhood John was called "the little doctor." How indefinite it all seemed, - how far, far away the future! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
