Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Madame De Sevigne to Her Daughter and Friends The Editress has set forth so fully, in the introductory sketch of Madame de Sevigne's Life and Times, her object in offering this book to the American public, that any further prologue may seem superfluous; yet there are one or two things to be said which seem to find their most proper expression in a Preface. Since the date of the first edition, the changes in the manners and feelings of the time have been rapid and continuous; and they have operated in a twofold manner. In the first place, we have become as a nation more thoroughly acquainted with French literature, and better able to appreciate that world of the past in which the great letter-writer lived. Madame de Sevigne was a woman who lived in and for others, - for her daughter, her friends, and, at a greater distance, for the brilliant circle of distinguished men and women of which she herself was so important a figure. Her letters are made up of incident, of meetings, of conversations: they are full of references to the topics then uppermost; they draw half their charm from the personality of the writer. Literature of this sort cannot stand alone. To enjoy it to the full we must know with some minuteness the history of the times in which it was written, and of the people to whom it was written. The knowledge of these things is now spreading wider every year, as we become familiar, through originals or translations, with the masterpieces of foreign languages. For instance, probably the best French sketch of Madame de Sevigne is from the pen of M. Sainte-Beuve, the great critic whom Mr. Arnold acknowledges for his master. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Madame De Sévigné As an excuse for an edition of the Letters of Mme de Sevigne, I may plead the very kind words of encouragement called forth from teachers and reviewers by my edition of Moliere's L'Avare. I may also quote in support of my views as to the manner in which a text should be edited, the words of Mr. Balfour. He, speaking of the immortality which is con ventionally ascribed to great writers of the past, says: "If they survive at all, it is but a shadowy life they live, moving on through the gradations of slow decay to distant but inevitable death. They can no longer, as heretofore, speak directly to the hearts of their fellow-men, evoking their tears or laughter, and all the pleasures, be they sad or merry, of which imagination holds the secret. Driven from the market place, they become first the companions of the student, then the victims of the specialist. He who would still hold familiar intercourse with them must train himself to penetrate the veil which, in ever thickening folds, conceals them from the ordinary gaze." It is impossible in the short space of an introduction to give all that is necessary to enable us to "penetrate the veil" which hangs between us and the century of Mme de Sevigne. This has been done once with loving care by the Baron de Walckenaer (Memoires sur Mme de Sevigne), but as this fills out some eight volumes, I may be excused from thinking that it is likely to have been read by the ordinary student. I have felt compelled to omit from my choice of letters all reference to the Jansenist controversy, despite Mme de Sevigne's close connection with the Arnauld family; nor have I ventured to mention Descartes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madame De Sveigne Our closing century has had from the outset, and will bequeath to its successor, a deep-seated inclination for historical studies. It has pursued them with a zest, a method, and a success, that the preceding ages had not known. The history of the globe and of its inhabitants has been entirely rewritten; the pick of the archeologist has brought to light the bones of the heroes of Mycenae and the very features of Sesostris. By the interpretation of ruins and the decipherment of hieroglyphics men have been enabled to reconstruct the existence of the illustrious dead, and even in some cases to enter into their thoughts. With a passion still more intense because seasoned with love, our century has devoted itself to the task of reviving the great authors of all literatures, the men who hold in trust the genius of nations and are the spokesmen of races.
