Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of James Murray, Loyalist Late in the year 1885 my uncle, James Murray Robbins, died at Brush Hill, Milton, the last of three generations of honorable men who had owned or occupied the estate for many years. His wife, Frances Mary Robbins, was the daughter of Abiel Harris, of Portsmouth, N. H. They lived together most happily, from their marriage in 1834, till Mrs. Robbin's death in 1870, which was a great grief to him. But he continued to live on in the old home with his kindest of sisters, making many friends happy by his large hospitality. He was one of the most companionable of men, delighting nieces, nephews, and young friends with his stories of his own adventures in youth, and his reading and commentaries on what he read. His wife was one of the early Abolitionists and a most earnest advocate of Emancipation. She brought to the house all those she loved best. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Recollections of John Murray Forbes, Vol. 1 of 2 However, I believe, although he would scarcely have admitted it, that the well known Scotch feel ing of pride in being a Scotchman lay hidden in a corner of his heart. Be this as it may, at least one trait came to him from the Old Highland clan, namely, an intense interest in all his relatives far and near, and a feeling of his responsibility towards them to the sixth generation. The thought of a relation's becoming bankrupt was horrible to him, and many a plunge he took into distasteful business in order to prevent such a catastrophe, or to remedy it, as far as possible, if it had already occurred. Book Slavery in North Carolina 1748 1775

Download or read book Slavery in North Carolina 1748 1775 written by Marvin L. Michael Kay and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Kay and Lorin Cary illuminate new aspects of slavery in colonial America by focusing on North Carolina, which has largely been ignored by scholars in favor of the more mature slave systems in the Chesapeake and South Carolina. Kay and Cary demonstrate that North Carolina's fast-growing slave population, increasingly bound on large plantations, included many slaves born in Africa who continued to stress their African pasts to make sense of their new world. The authors illustrate this process by analyzing slave languages, naming practices, family structures, religion, and patterns of resistance. Kay and Cary clearly demonstrate that slaveowners erected a Draconian code of criminal justice for slaves. This system played a central role in the masters' attempt to achieve legal, political, and physical hegemony over their slaves, but it impeded a coherent attempt at acculturation. In fact, say Kay and Cary, slaveowners often withheld white culture from slaves rather than work to convert them to it. As a result, slaves retained significant elements of their African heritage and therefore enjoyed a degree of cultural autonomy that freed them from reliance on a worldview and value system determined by whites.
