Book Otis Letters in Defence of the Hartford Convention and the People of Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Otis Letters in Defence of the Hartford Convention and the People of Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Harrison Gray Otis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Otis' Letters in Defence of the Hartford Convention and the People of Massachusetts In presenting to the public this collection of Mr. Otis' Letters upon the Hartford Convention, we do him no more than justice in declaring our conviction that he has amply redeemed his promises. He has demonstrated not merely the moral, but the physical impossibility of a secret combination, so often charged on that assembly; and though obliged to refer to facts and events which transpired during the war, he has forborne reviving topics of controversy, and has provided an armour for the defence of the honor of the State, which even his political opponents need not be backward to put on. Expectation too may be entertained that the brow beaten and calculating friends of the primitive plan of the Convention, (if any such there be) who have kept aloof and borne with exemplary fortitude censures inflicted on their agents, will no longer be ashamed or afraid to put in a word, though a commendable prudence may forbid their taking up a Cudgel in behalf of their old Forlorn Hope. The censors of the Hartford Convention may be divided into three classes. First the "Enragees," or those who affect to be patriots "par excellence." Download or read book Ornamenting the Cold Roast written by Dorothee Wagner von Hoff and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the meticulous case studies of three individual houses from different eras, which serve to depict the social, political, and cultural effects that domestic architecture and interior design had on the upper class, the city of Boston, and a national American identity. It takes the reader on a journey to 18th and 19th century Boston and provides insight into the lives of these prominent men and women as seen through the perspective of their homes. It is a novel examination of the cultural significance of domestic architecture and interior design and, because of its story-telling character and extensive attention to detail, it is fascinating for curious readers and cultural historians alike.
