Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Ireland These Letters were communicated to the Daily News' during my journey in Ireland this last autumn. A reprint of them, as a volume, has been asked for, and I now obey the call. My readers will take them for what they are - a rapid account of impressions received and thoughts excited from day to day, in the course of a journey of above 1200 miles. I have thought it best not to alter them, either in form or matter. There would be no use in attempting to give anything of the character of a closet-book to letters written sometimes in a coffee-room, sometimes in the crowded single parlour of a country inn, - now to the sound of the harp, and now to the clatter of knives and forks, and scarcely ever within reach of books therefore have I left untouched what I wrote, even to the no tices of passing incidents as if they were still present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love Letters of an Irishwoman Here I am sitting in my boodwar on the third floor using my trunk for a writing desk and as I sit here I can look out my window and see Kee gan's goat on Mccarthy's lot, calmly chewing a red flannel shirt as he gazes up toward the broad blue dome of the heavens. Oh, that clear goat. I could dash out there acrost the lots, jump the dump and cast my arms around his silky neck, then I could gaze into his dreamy blinkers and kiss him, oh, a thousand times. Why? Do you ask me why I am so moved by a goat, I who have been brought up with a goat in the kitchen most of the time, well better people than me have been moved by a goat before now, and Mike dear, this goat is not like other goats. Book Irish Protestant Letters Etc Etc

Download or read book Irish Protestant Letters Etc Etc written by R. R. B. Dublin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Protestant Letters, Etc, Etc: Also, an Address on Ireland the Cradle of European Literature; To Which Is Added a Choice Collection of Original and Selected Poetry In presenting to a generous Public, the following letters, &c. the author is not induced to do so from any claim to merit or superiority. His chief desire is to set before the enlightened citizens of America, the true character of Protestant foreigners in general, and of Irish Protestants in particular. If Ireland occupies the attention of the-writer to a great extent, it should not create any surprise, inasmuch as his youngest years were spent in that country, and its history has long been his favorite study. The statements embodied in these pages have been drawn from the most reliable sources. Though they may not be favorably received by all their readers, they are nevertheless stubborn facts. Actuated by a true love for his native land, he has introduced a few of the illustrious names that have adorned his country - men whose brilliant deeds in America have raised a monument of glory to which posterity will exultingly point as they exclaim, "Behold the deeds of our fathers in other times!" Honor to their memories! Though some may endeavor to deny the truthfulness of his conclusions, he is, however, well aware, that in the language of Washington Irving: "There is a certain meddlesome spirit, which in the garb of learned research, goes prying about the traces of history, casting down its fairest trophies. Care should be taken to vindicate great names from such pernicious erudition." The author is conscious of many defects in this work. Typographical errors, over which he had no control, have unavoidably crept into it while passing through the press, and have rendered it not so perfect as it otherwise should have been. As it now stands he only asks for it a careful examination; not from the eyes of professional critics, but from those of an inquiring public. He is not an author by profession, but merely a tyro in the halls of literature. He knows, as Byron has thus expressed: - "A man must serve his time to every trade Save censure; critics all are ready made.
