My Dbabest Charley, The first week in August 1848, our new Louse on the hill, 'College ttill' as we called it, was sufficiently completed for us to remove there; and Sunday the 12th, we had divine service in our large dining hall, instead of in the lower room of the Court House. A wide staircase outside the front of the house, with a pretty little porch at the top, leads to this hall. Over the porch, hangs a great bell, which rings at certain hours of the day, to set us all to our various employments; it calls the Malays to their work at six, the Chinese at seven; at eleven, it rings for their two hours to rest; at one, that they may begin work again; at five, to say work is over for the day. At one time, when we had no longer workmen in our employ, I thought the bell, and our ears too, might have a little rest from its frequent dingdong, but the townspeople petitioned it might go on as usual, for they were so accustomed to time their hours by it, they should feel quite at a loss without it. While we were removing to the Mission House, the Rajah, and nearly all the English, were away on the expedition up the pirate rivers, which I told you about some time ago. On the 24th of August, however, they returned, and a great rejoicing took place; our house was filled in every corner, with officers from the ships of war, who enjoyed a few nights on shore, and especially on our cold breezy hill. On the evening of the 26th, six Dyak women, who had been made captives, and were kept and brought to Sarawak, as hostages for their husbands' good behaviour, arrived, and the Rajah asked me to take care of them; he wished to shew them how differently Christian people treat their prisoners to what pirates do, consequently these poor women were...

Book Power and Prowess

Download or read book Power and Prowess written by JH Walker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant reinterpretation of Sarawak history, Power and Prowess explores the network of power, economic and ritual relationships that developed on the northwest coast of Borneo in the mid-nineteenth century, from which a coalition led by James Brooke established the state of Sarawak. Where many authors placed Brooke in the context of nineteenth century British imperialism, this study perceives him in the context of Bornean cultures and political economies. Brooke emerges from the historical record as a 'man of prowess', with the author identifying important ritual sources of Brooke's power among Malays, Bidayuh and Ibans, sources which derived from and expressed indigenous cultural traditions about fertility, health and status. Drawing on conceptual frameworks from political science, as well as recent southeast Asian historiography, Power and Prowess offers a detailed political history of the period and new interpretations of Brooke's career. This study also retrieves from the historical sources previously concealed narratives which reflect the interests, priorities and activities of Sarawak people themselves. J.H. WALKER lectures in political science at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Book A Decade in Borneo

Download or read book A Decade in Borneo written by Ada Pryer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1878 a German named Overbeck and an Englishman named Dent travelled to North Borneo (now Sabah), announced to the locals that their ruler, the Sultan of Brunei, had sold all trade rights in the region, and left a young man named William Pryer to 'establish' the British North Borneo Company there. In 1894 Ada Pryer, who had married William in 1883, published her account of his early years as an administrator, along with some sketches of their life together. The result is a lively, vivid and compelling narrative." "The only book aimed at presenting North Borneo appealingly to British audiences, and thus capturing their political support for the British commercial presence there, Ada's little book functioned as a kind of immigration manual about a land where snakes were scarce and moonlight was plentiful. The memoir has value both as a travel narrative in its own right and for understanding the international politics of the British takeover of North Borneo." "This new edition reproduces the text of the original 1894 edition, and includes an introductory essay as well as annotations to explain and contextualize references of historical and biographical significance."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book The Less Noble Sex written by M. Jeanne Peterson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1989-05-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physically frail, badly educated girls, brought up to lead useless lives as idle gentlewomen, married to dominant husbands, and relegated to "separate spheres" of life—these phrases have often been used to describe Victorian upper-middle-class women. M. Jeanne Peterson rejects such formulations and the received wisdom they embody in favor of a careful examination of Victorian ladies and their lives. Focusing on a network of urban professional families over three generations, this book examines the scope and quality of gentlewomen's education, their physical lives, their relationship to money, their experience of family illness and death, and their relationships to men (brothers and friends as well as fathers and husbands). Peterson also examines the prominent place of work in the lives of these "leisured" Victorian ladies, both single and married. Far from idle, the mothers, wives, and daughters of Victorian clergymen, doctors, lawyers, university dons, and others were accomplished and productive members of society who made substantial public and private contributions to virtually every sphere of Victorian life.

Download or read book White Rajah written by Nigel Barley and published by Abacus. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir James Brooke was an extraordinary 'eminent' Victorian, whose life was the stuff of legend. His curious career began in 1841 when he was caught up in a war in Brunei which had started because a party of local Dayaks had refused to furl their umbrellas in the presence of the Sultan. Brooke was an opportunist who, with the Sultan's backing, made war on the Dayaks tribespeople and eventually found himself ruling over Sarawak - a kingdom the size of England - as a result. How he achieved it is a romantic, sometimes horrifying story. Brooke is someone that George Macdonald Fraser would scarcely dare to invent. Errol Flynn wanted to play him in a movie, seventy years after his death and his dynasty is remembered throughout South-East Asia.
