My Dbabest Charley, The first week in August 1848, our new Louse on the hill, 'College ttill' as we called it, was sufficiently completed for us to remove there; and Sunday the 12th, we had divine service in our large dining hall, instead of in the lower room of the Court House. A wide staircase outside the front of the house, with a pretty little porch at the top, leads to this hall. Over the porch, hangs a great bell, which rings at certain hours of the day, to set us all to our various employments; it calls the Malays to their work at six, the Chinese at seven; at eleven, it rings for their two hours to rest; at one, that they may begin work again; at five, to say work is over for the day. At one time, when we had no longer workmen in our employ, I thought the bell, and our ears too, might have a little rest from its frequent dingdong, but the townspeople petitioned it might go on as usual, for they were so accustomed to time their hours by it, they should feel quite at a loss without it. While we were removing to the Mission House, the Rajah, and nearly all the English, were away on the expedition up the pirate rivers, which I told you about some time ago. On the 24th of August, however, they returned, and a great rejoicing took place; our house was filled in every corner, with officers from the ships of war, who enjoyed a few nights on shore, and especially on our cold breezy hill. On the evening of the 26th, six Dyak women, who had been made captives, and were kept and brought to Sarawak, as hostages for their husbands' good behaviour, arrived, and the Rajah asked me to take care of them; he wished to shew them how differently Christian people treat their prisoners to what pirates do, consequently these poor women were...

Book excerpt: A significant reinterpretation of Sarawak history, Power and Prowess explores the network of power, economic and ritual relationships that developed on the northwest coast of Borneo in the mid-nineteenth century, from which a coalition led by James Brooke established the state of Sarawak. Where many authors placed Brooke in the context of nineteenth century British imperialism, this study perceives him in the context of Bornean cultures and political economies. Brooke emerges from the historical record as a 'man of prowess', with the author identifying important ritual sources of Brooke's power among Malays, Bidayuh and Ibans, sources which derived from and expressed indigenous cultural traditions about fertility, health and status. Drawing on conceptual frameworks from political science, as well as recent southeast Asian historiography, Power and Prowess offers a detailed political history of the period and new interpretations of Brooke's career. This study also retrieves from the historical sources previously concealed narratives which reflect the interests, priorities and activities of Sarawak people themselves. J.H. M. Jeanne Peterson rejects such formulations and the received wisdom they embody in favor of a careful examination of Victorian ladies and their lives. Focusing on a network of urban professional families over three generations, this book examines the scope and quality of gentlewomen's education, their physical lives, their relationship to money, their experience of family illness and death, and their relationships to men (brothers and friends as well as fathers and husbands). Peterson also examines the prominent place of work in the lives of these "leisured" Victorian ladies, both single and married. Far from idle, the mothers, wives, and daughters of Victorian clergymen, doctors, lawyers, university dons, and others were accomplished and productive members of society who made substantial public and private contributions to virtually every sphere of Victorian life.
