Book Dear Sister

Download or read book Dear Sister written by Lisa Factora-Borchers and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Sister, It wasn't your fault; it was never your fault. You did nothing wrong. Hold this tight to your heart: it wasn't your fault. At night when you lay there and your mind fills with images and you wonder if only, if you had . . . if you hadn't . . . . Remember: it wasn't your fault. Dear Sister highlights the lessons, memories, and vision of over forty artists, activists, mothers, writers, and students who share a common bond: they are survivors of sexual violence. Written in an epistolary format, this multi-generational, multi-ethnic collection of letters and essays is a moving journey into the hearts and minds of the survivors of rape, incest, and other forms of sexual violence, written directly to and for other survivors. Dear Sister goes far beyond traditional books about healing, which often use "experts" to explain the experience of survivors for the rest of the world. Where other books about rape weave the voices of feminists and activists together and imagine what a world without violence might look like, Dear Sister describes the reality of what the world looks like through the eyes of a survivor. From a professor in the Midwest to a poet in Belgium, an escapee from a child prostitution ring, a survivor advocate in the Congo, and a sex worker in San Francisco, Dear Sister touches on issues of feminism, love, disability, gender, justice, identity, and spirituality. Lisa Factora-Borchers is a Filipina writer and editor whose work has been published in make/shift, Bitch, Left Turn, and Critical Moment. Contributors: Aaminah Shakur, Adrienne Maree Brown, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Allison McCarthy, Amita Y. Book excerpt: I’m Still Here is the story of one woman who experienced the trauma and pain of child sexual abuse, sexual assault, and wife battering. She was seventeen when she married, and by the age of twenty-two, she had three children and was terrorized by her husband. She escapes the marriage after eleven tumultuous years but must leave two of her three children with their father, only to end up with a man who manipulates and dominates her. She leaves him, and years later lives with another abusive man. Elizabeth has to ask herself: why? What is it about her that draws her to abusive men? And why is her behaviour so troublesome to her? Through several forms of therapy by many therapists and reading self-help books, she begins to understand her thinking, her behaviour, and her physical ailments from the time she was a child. Finally, in one year, she took a monumental step in self-awareness by writing her memoir, I’m Still Here. During research and writing this book, she discovers, the process has become a yearlong therapy session, and she is the client and the therapist. I’m Still Here helps her understand how her life experiences molded who she has become based on science and her life. And hopefully, my story will provide insight for those struggling with trauma from family violence or sexual abuse, and, for Victim Assistants and first responders.

Book Joy Comes in the Morning

Download or read book Joy Comes in the Morning written by Yvonne Retief and published by Struik Christian Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molestation almost invariably takes place in secret, and most victims never speak to anyone about it. The pain is with them for life, and their functioning as human beings is usually negatively affected to some extent. There are those who would like to consult a therapist but for whom this is impossible due to the unavailability of a suitable person. Then there are those whose pain is so intense that they don’t have the courage to face it. The purpose of this book is to give such people the courage to do something about this matter, so that they may once again experience the ‘joy that comes in the morning’. This book is written in the form of a number of letters to an imaginary woman who, as a young girl, was molested by her grandfather. She lives in a small town and has no access to a suitable therapist. She and her therapist (the author) agree to undertake therapy by correspondence. In the last ten letters the sexual healing is discussed. Joy Comes in the Morning introduces the reader to a specific technique developed with great success by the author over a number of years. The book is thus also aimed at therapists who wish to develop their skills in this field.

Book Little Miss Linda Speaks About Rape

Download or read book Little Miss Linda Speaks About Rape written by Ryan Battle and published by Keen Vision Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2023-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2022 Distinguished Authors Guild-DAG 2022 PenCraft Book Award 2022 Purple Dragonfly Book Award Honorable Mention Rape is an extremely difficult topic to discuss with young children; however, it is a necessary conversation we must have. This book allows parents, teachers, counselors, administrators and those who work with children to create a responsible and safe space to talk about rape. The "Me Too Movement" is not just about adults but it is a conversation for children too. Statistics have shown that every nine minutes 1 in 9 girls and 1 and 53 boys will be sexually assaulted. We can no longer wait! The time is now to have this conversation. Little Miss Linda, as a rape survivor, learns to use her voice to express thoughts about rape, but not from feeling, out of "shame or guilt." Instead, she develops a letter writing campaign to let other children know that rape is not the victim's fault. Little Miss Linda creates a community outreach program called "STAR" (Survivors Talking About Rape). She encourages other to not sit still but lift up their voices and be silent no more. Join the campaign against rape so we can "STAR" together. Please be advised that this book is best suited for those ages 12+. It contains themes around sexual assault/violence. This book may also provoke psychological distress; thus, ensure that the proper resources and contacts are available should they be necessary. Reader's Favorite Five Star Reviewed By Rylanne Burdette Little Miss Linda Speaks about Rape is a challenging yet powerful read that hit my heart in a way that I wasn't expecting when I first picked it up. Although I have not experienced anything like this, I have several friends who have, and I think that this book, even though it is marketed as a children's book, would really impact them as well. The illustrations alongside the dialogue and plot all worked together to create a story that will stick with me for a long time. I would recommend Little Miss Linda Speaks about Rape by Linda J. M. Holloway to children who are in elementary school, but I also think that parents or other trusted adults should be present when it is read. This book is one that needs to be thought about and talked about during and after reading it. Little Miss Linda Speaks about Rape by Linda J. M. Holloway is a must-read book.

Download or read book Aftermath written by Susan J. Brison and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful personal narrative of recovery and an illuminating philosophical exploration of trauma On July 4, 1990, while on a morning walk in southern France, Susan Brison was attacked from behind, severely beaten, sexually assaulted, strangled to unconsciousness, and left for dead. She survived, but her world was destroyed. Her training as a philosopher could not help her make sense of things, and many of her fundamental assumptions about the nature of the self and the world it inhabits were shattered. At once a personal narrative of recovery and a philosophical exploration of trauma, this bravely and beautifully written book examines the undoing and remaking of a self in the aftermath of violence. It explores, from an interdisciplinary perspective, memory and truth, identity and self, autonomy and community. It offers imaginative access to the experience of a rape survivor as well as a reflective critique of a society in which women routinely fear and suffer sexual violence. As Brison observes, trauma disrupts memory, severs past from present, and incapacitates the ability to envision a future. Yet the act of bearing witness, she argues, facilitates recovery by integrating the experience into the survivor's life's story. She also argues for the importance, as well as the hazards, of using first-person narratives in understanding not only trauma, but also larger philosophical questions about what we can know and how we should live.

Book Now They Lay me Down to Rest

Download or read book Now They Lay me Down to Rest written by Thomas M. Aiken and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now They Lay me Down to Rest Hodgie’s Story By: Connie L. Aiken and Thomas M. Aiken About the Book New York State Police Investigator Thomas M. Aiken was asked to reopen a 22-year-old cold case homicide in August of 1994. It involved a little boy who was abused, beaten, tortured, and starved literally to death. A little boy who never felt the love or protection of a mother in his short life with the fatal strike occurring just before his third birthday. As they began their grueling investigation, they discovered one lie after another by the professionals that were trusted to protect these children, allowing a murderous monster to walk free for 22 years and horrendously abuse six additional siblings. Until a caring and dedicated prosecutor, tenacious investigators, and world-renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, put all the broken pieces together and obtained justice for a little boy who no one ever thought anyone would ever care about. All the while during the non-stop gathering of evidence and statements, this book also includes a couple of other chilling homicides that were intertwined during this investigation with all of this adding up to a made for TV movie. Now They Lay me Down to Rest was written from the perspective of Connie, Tom’s wife and mother of six children, who navigated her way through a 30-year career involving over 100 homicides and 700 horrendous child abuse cases all coming home to her. One case in particular, the story of Hodgie, has always been on their minds and in their hearts. They knew someday they wanted to write a book about this case to bring awareness to help children that are in similar situations. Their goal is to educate police, CPS, doctors, teachers, neighbors, and anyone who is in a position to observe children being abused or hear their cries, and to give them the courage to speak up and take action. Comments from October 4, 2021 Lecture at the University of South Carolina Beaufort: “The knowledge of the presenter and how he presented it. It was fascinating, horrifying, and enlightening.” “The most moving and deep presentation I have ever attended…outstanding!!!” “Unbelievable how evil people can be. True evil in this world…frightening!” “Extremely informative. The instructor’s work experience. More than I expected. Excellent” “Totally riveting! Created multitude of emotions! Yes, I cried during the “I Miss You Daddy” video/song. But touched at the passion and dedication to help make a change when evil lives among us! Continued success and bless both of you for your caring and dedication. I look forward to your book! As an aside…makes me angry!” “Yes, this class has too many WOW factors to adequately recognize here. I gained a high level of appreciation for the focus, determination, and professionalism of our civilian police forces and especially the detectives who work to solve these horrific and unsettling crimes. I have not attended a more interesting (even though the crime was horrific and unsettling) and engaging class. The presenter was fabulous mainly because he was genuine and forthcoming in so many ways.” “What these officers go through…it is hard to imagine being able to turn if off outside of work.” Comments from May 2, 2022 Lecture at Clemson University: “Excellent..!! Want more by these folks.” “Would love other classes taught by Mr. Aiken.”

Book Female Sexual Abuse of Children

Download or read book Female Sexual Abuse of Children written by Michele Elliott and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1994-05-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This courageous and powerful book is a first step in addressing the secrecy, distress, anger, and fear surrounding female sexual abuse of children. Refuting the rationales for our lack of attention to the problem and contradicting some commonly held beliefs about sexual abuse, it combines accounts from survivors with input from professionals working with both survivors and abusers. Part I presents contributions from professionals who discuss aspects of female sexual abuse ranging from impact and treatment issues for victims of childhood sexual abuse by female perpetrators to the paradox of women who sexually abuse children. The second part is devoted to survivors--it presents stories from both men and women, then provides self-help guidelines for both. The book concludes with a valuable section on resources which includes a review of the existing literature on female child molestation as well as a listing of pertinent books and help organizations. FEMALE SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN also addresses the controversial issue of current statistics that show that female sexual abuse is very rare and the question of whether it is being underreported due to fear from survivors that they will not be believed or supported. Regardless of the true magnitude of this problem, secrecy or denial about any aspect of child abuse must be avoided. Whatever future studies may show about this problem, it will not diminish this book's importance in taking the step of exploring this issue.

Book The School of Greatness

Download or read book The School of Greatness written by Lewis Howes and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a career-ending injury left elite athlete and professional football player Lewis Howes out of work and living on his sister’s couch, he decided he needed to make a change for the better. He started by reaching out to people he admired, searching for mentors, and applying his past coaches’ advice from sports to life off the field. Lewis did more than bounce back: He built a multimillion-dollar online business and is now a sought-after business coach, speaker, and podcast host. In The School of Greatness, Howes shares the essential tips and habits he gathered in interviewing “the greats” on his wildly popular podcast of the same name. In discussion with people like Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson and Pencils of Promise CEO Adam Braun, Howes figured out that greatness is unearthed and cultivated from within. The masters of greatness are not successful because they got lucky or are innately more talented, but because they applied specific habits and tools to embrace and overcome adversity in their lives. A framework for personal development, The School of Greatness gives you the tools, knowledge, and actionable resources you need to reach your potential. Howes anchors each chapter with a specific lesson he culled from his greatness “professors” and his own experiences to teach you how to create a vision, develop hustle, and use dedication, mindfulness, joy, and love to reach goals. His lessons and practical exercises prove that anyone is capable of achieving success and that we can all strive for greatness in our everyday lives.

  • Author : Sara Hagerty
  • Publisher : Zondervan

  • ISBN : 0310339987
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Unseen written by Sara Hagerty and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we find contentment in God when we feel so hidden? Sara Hagerty unfolds the truths found in the biblical story of Mary of Bethany to discover the scandalous love of God and explore the spiritual richness of being hidden in him. Every heart longs to be seen and understood. Yet most of our lives is unwitnessed. We spend our days working, driving, parenting. We sometimes spend whole seasons feeling unnoticed and unappreciated. In Unseen, Sara Hagerty suggests that this is exactly what God intended. He is the only One who truly knows us. He is the only One who understands the value of the unseen in our lives. When this truth seeps into our souls, we realize that only when we hide ourselves in God can we give ourselves to others in true freedom--and know the joy of a deeper relationship with the God who sees us. Our culture applauds what we can produce, what we can show, what we can upload to social media. Only when we give all of ourselves to God--unedited, abandoned, apparently wasteful in its lack of productivity--can we live out who God created us to be. As Hagerty writes, "Maybe my seemingly unproductive, looking-up-at-Him life produces awe among the angels." Through an eloquent exploration of both personal and biblical story, Hagerty calls us to offer every unseen minute of our lives to God. God is in the secret places of our lives that no one else witnesses. But we've not been relegated to these places. We've been invited. We may be "wasting" ourselves in a hidden corner today: The cubicle on the fourth floor. The hospital bedside of an elderly parent. The laundry room. But these are the places God uses to meet us with a radical love. These are the places that produce the kind of unhinged love in us that gives everything at His feet, whether or not anyone else ever proclaims our name, whether or not anyone else ever sees. God's invitation is not just for a season or a day. It is the question of our lives: "When no one else applauds you, when it makes no sense, when you see no results--will you waste your love on Me?"
