Excerpt: ... to put the matter in order, I confidently hope that the divine Majesty will arrange it entirely for His greater praise and glory, for by His grace we desire nothing else. May He through His infinite and supreme goodness deign to grant us His abundant grace that we may perceive His divine will and accomplish it entirely.40 XXIV. To The Fathers And Brothers At Coimbra.41 Rome, May 7, 1547. May the grace and eternal love of Christ Our Lord ever favour and help us. Amen. Through the letters of Master Simon and Santa Cruz I continually receive news of you all, and God knows, from Whom all that is good proceeds, the great consolation and joy I experience when I hear ihow He helps you in the study of letters as well as of virtue, the good odour of which encourages and animates many even in other parts very distant from your land. And if this should bring joy to every Christian, on account of the common obligation imposed on all to love the honour of God and the good of His image redeemed with the blood and life of Jesus Christ, great and special reason is there that I should rejoice in Our LorcL who am so much obliged to "keep you within my soul with special affection. For all this may our Creator and Redeemer be for ever blessed and praised, from Whose infinite liberality spring all good and all grace; and may He deign every day to open up yet more the fountain of His mercies, that He may increase and carry forward what He has begun in your souls. And I have no doubt, so supreme is He in goodness, so supremely liberal of His gifts, and of that eternal love which makes Him more eager to grant us our perfection than we are to receive it, that He will do it; for if it were not so Jesus Christ would not Himself incite us to that which we can...

Book Ignatius of Loyola and Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book Ignatius of Loyola and Thomas Aquinas written by Justin M. Anderson and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the relationship between Jesuits and Dominicans has historically been marked by theological controversy, Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, shows remarkable affinity for the Thomistic tradition, the tradition advanced above all by the Dominican order. When writing the Jesuit Constitutions, in fact, Ignatius made Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologiae the primary textbook for Jesuit theological formation. The contributions to this volume?originating from Jesuits, Dominicans, and lay scholars alike?explore different aspects of the complex yet illuminating relationship between Ignatius and Thomas. The themes range from the general relationship between the early Jesuits and scholastic theology to the attempts by Francisco de Toledo, the first Jesuit cardinal, to apply Thomistic reasoning to the religious and legal status of Jewish converts to Christianity. Other contributions compare Ignatius and Thomas on topics of significant interest for dogmatic, sacramental, and spiritual theology: spiritual experience, the ordering of the passions, the use of the imagination, prudence and discernment of spirits, frequent communion, Mariology, the "hierarchical church," and the limits of obedience. Students of Ignatius of Loyola, Thomas Aquinas, second scholasticism, Christian-Jewish relations, and spiritual theology in general will find this volume an invaluable contribution.

Book What Matters Most and Why

Download or read book What Matters Most and Why written by Jim Manney and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Makes a five-hundred-year-old wisdom tradition accessible to contemporary readers seeking daily guidance on life and how to live it How can I find meaning and joy? How can I think clearly? What’s valuable in life, and what’s irrelevant? How do we manage anger? What can we do about envy, laziness, resentment? How do I know what matters most? What do I really want? These are the questions that lie at the heart of Ignatian spirituality, the five-hundred-year-old wisdom tradition that has shown leaders, seekers, and doers the way to live a better life. The daily readings in this book emphasize answers to pressing questions about satisfaction in work and relationships. St. Ignatius and his friends believed that “God is found in all things” and “love is best expressed in deeds rather than words.” The Ignatian way is profoundly practical. It guides us through the great challenge of life — finding God and finding our place in God’s work to save and heal the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jesuit mission to China more than four hundred years ago has been the subject of sustained scholarly investigation for centuries. Focusing on the concepts of friendship and hospitality as they were both theorized and practiced by the Jesuit missionaries and their Confucian hosts, this book offers a new, comparative, and deconstructive reading of the interaction between these two vastly different cultures. Dongfeng Xu analyzes how the Jesuits presented their concept of friendship to achieve their evangelical goals and how the Confucians reacted in turn by either displaying or denying hospitality. Challenging the hierarchical view in traditional discourse on friendship and hospitality by revealing the irreducible otherness as the condition of possibility of the two concepts, Xu argues that one legacy of the Jesuit-Confucian encounter has been the shared recognition that cultural differences are what both motivated and conditioned cross-cultural exchanges and understandings.
