Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter to Friends on the Personal Christian Life Dear mr. - I am very glad to have news of your activity, and to hear that your work begins to attract attention. Fifty years ago Lloyd Gar rison's Declaration of N ou-resistance only estranged people from him; and Ballou's fifty years' labour in the same direction was constantly met by a con spiracy of Silence. I now read with great pleasure in the Voice admirable thoughts by American writers on this question of Non-resistance I need only demur at the notion expressed by Mr. B. It is an old but unfounded libel upon Christ to suppose that the expulsion of the cattle from the temple. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend: On the Evidences, Doctrines, and Duties of the Christian Religion The history of the work now presented to the public may be given in very few words. It originated in a series of conversations which I had about five years ago with a friend much younger than myself, who had a considerable acquaintance with almost all except religious subjects. He expressed much surprise that a person of my habits and pursuits in other respects should adopt the religious notions I had long entertained, or indeed be solicitous about any religious opinions whatever; and I endeavoured to assign the reasons which led me to embrace them, and to consider such topics as of the first importance. After a short time we were so far separated as to have much fewer opportunities of personal intercourse: and I in consequence became induced to carry on the momentous inquiry we had previously commenced, by letter. Pursuant to this intention, all the letters in the first volume were actually written: they were read in manuscript by my friend; and, as I have reason to believe, were not unproductive of benefit. His Letters and Papers from Prison became a prized testimony to Christian faith and courage, read by thousands. Now in Life Together we have Pastor Bonhoeffer's experience of Christian community. This story of a unique fellowship in an underground seminary during the Nazi years reads like one of Paul's letters. It gives practical advice on how life together in Christ can be sustained in families and groups. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend, on the Evidences, Doctrines, and Duties, of the Christian Religion, Vol. 2 Christianity, it is true, is distinguishable from all other systems by the purity, excellency, and extent of the morality it enforces; yet this is not, I conceive, its most prominent characteristic. It no where pre sents us with a connected scheme of ethics, but it does far better in advancing the most simple precepts rela tive to every part of moral duty, and accompanying them with the most powerful incentives to upright and holy conduct. Its grand peculiarity consists in as suming the fact that man is in a fallen state, that he has lost the image of God, that he is of himself inca puble of regaining the favour of his Creator, and in providing a remedy by which man may be cured of his moral disorder; this remedy being no less than the gift of the Son of God who, in relation to mankind, is not so frequently called their pattern, as the Physician of Souls, the great Deliverer, the Saviour of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to a Friend on the Evidences and Theory of Christianity The following letter is published at the request of the friend to whom it was ad dressed, and in the hope that its brevity may prove a recommendation to some who have neither time nor inclination for the study of works of greater length and higher pretensions. In admitting, how ever, this hope, the writer would earnestly refer to the Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scrip tures, by the Rev. T. Hartwell Horne, as a library of information on all points connected with the evidences of the Chris tian religion, and the illustration of the Bible; and also to the works of the Rev. Book Letters of Isaac Penington

Download or read book Letters of Isaac Penington written by Isaac Panington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Isaac Penington: An Eminent Minister of the Gospel in the Society of Friends The following letters form part of a collection published by John Barclay in England in 1828, and since republished in this country. Their author, Isaac Penington, was a member and minister of the religious society of Friends, and was the son of Alderman Penington, of London, who during two years was Mayor of that city, and a noted member of the Long Parliament. The letters were written at various intervals between the time at which Isaac Penington joined the Society of Friends, which was about the year 1658, and his death, which took place in 1679. Both the English and American editions having been exhausted, it has been thought that it might be useful to reprint such of the letters as could be comprised in a volume of this series. With reference to economy of space, the selection is chiefly confined to those which arc hortatory in character. Probably few have realized with more fulness the spiritual nature of Christianity than did Isaac Penington. His own relation of what befell him in his pursuit after truth cannot fail, therefore, to be deeply instructive. "I was acquainted," ho says, "with a spring of life from my childhood, which enlightened me in my tender years, and pointed my heart towards the Lord, begetting true sense in me, and faith, and hope, and love, and humility, and meekness, &c., so that indeed I was a wonder to some that knew me, because of the savor and life of religion which dwelt in my heart and appeared in my conversation. "But I never durst trust the spring of my life, and the springings up of life therefrom; but, in reading the Scriptures, gathered what knowledge I could therefrom, and set this over the spring and springings of life in me, and indeed judged that I ought so to do. Book Letters to a Friend on Some of the Primitive Doctrines of Christianity Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend, on Some of the Primitive Doctrines of Christianity IN publishing the following Letters, it is necessary that I should briefly state some of the reasons which have induced me thus to give a more extended circulation to what was originally only a private communication of sentiment. They contain the views of a friend who, during his visit and gospel labours in this land, was often led into deep exercise and solicitude on subjects of great interest and importance to our religious society. The views which he has taken, and the sentiments he has expressed, are, in my judgment, well\ calculated to afford instruction and profit; and to support the ancient doctrines and testimo nies of our society; nor can I doubt but they will be acceptable to, and be well received by all who wish these doctrines and testimonies to be maintained in their ancient purity. Yet to others who may be shunning the cross, and the narrow way, and seeking for themselves and their children more liberty; endeavouring to combine what are altogether irreconcilable, the grandeur and friendships of this world with the plain and simple way of truth, I expect some of the sentiments contained in this work, will be very unpalatable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Young Christian Another great difficulty with me was, that I had not correct ideas of what is implied in the life of faith. I understood very well that heaven was not to be purchased with penances, or merited by good works. Yet the spirit of legality lingered long in my heart, unperceived. I used to think it a mark of humility for a Christian to have doubts and fears about the reality of his conversion. If I happened to hear one speak with confidence as to his good estate, I thought it savored of self-complacency, and when that Christian could say with David, My soul shall make her boast in the Lord, it seemed to me that he was making his boast in himself. The part which they have all along acted in a variety of the leading objects of humanity and Christian benevolence, has entitled them to it.
