Download or read book Burning Bright written by Dethloff Diana and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the work and career of the internationally renowned art historian, David Bindman, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, and is above all a tribute to him from his former students and colleagues. With essays on sculpture, drawings, watercolours and prints, the volume reflects the extraordinary range of Bindman's knowledge of works of art and his impact through his teaching and research on the understanding of British and European artistic developments from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The essays cast light on questions of technique and stylistic change, patronage, collecting and iconography, and engage with issues such as the representation of race, gender, sexuality, political violence and propaganda, exile, and notions of the canon. The artists discussed here include Hogarth, Blake, Roubiliac, Thorvaldsen and Canova, all subjects of books by David Bindman, as well as Morland, Rowlandson, Gillray, Millais, Munch, Nevinson, and Heartfield.
Download or read book Kwan yin written by Stella Benson and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kwan-yin" by Stella Benson is an intense one-act play presenting two acolytes and four priests worshiping before an altar of the Goddess Of Mercy. Do they, however, hear her voice when she answers? Or are they too preoccupied with their very own sound? Excerpt: "A woman's voice again sings, unheeded, from behind the veil of smoke. Wherefore plead with death? Who shall soften the terrible heart of death? All, in urgent but slow unison: Kwan-yin. Kwan-yin. Kwan-yin. Kwan-yin. The golden face of Kwan-yin above the altar changes suddenly and terribly, and becomes like a masque of fear. The lanterns flare spasmodically. The voice can now be identified as Kwan-yin's, but still the priests stand unhearing with their heads bowed, and still the passionless bell rings. Kwan-yin, in a screaming voice: Ah, be still, be still.... I am Kwan-yin. I am Mercy. Mercy is defeated. Mercy who battled not, is defeated. She is a captive bound to the chariot of pain. Sorrow has set his foot upon her neck. Sin has mocked her. Turn away thine eyes from Mercy, From poor Mercy. Woo her no more. Cry upon her no more."

Download or read book Trees in Anglo Saxon England written by Della Hooke and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trees played a particularly important part in the rural economy of Anglo-Saxon England, both for wood and timber and as a wood-pasture resource, with hunting gaining a growing cultural role. But they are also powerful icons in many pre-Christian religions, with a degree of tree symbolism found in Christian scripture too. This wide-ranging book explores both the "real", historical and archaeological evidence of trees and woodland, and as they are depicted in Anglo-Saxon literature and legend. Place-name and charter references cast light upon the distribution of particular tree species (mapped here in detail for the first time) and also reflect upon regional character in a period that was fundamental for the evolution of the present landscape. Della Hooke is Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

Download or read book Minding the Darkness written by Peter Dale Scott and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minding the Darkness is the final volume of Peter Dale Scott's landmark trilogy Seculum. Following Coming to Jakarta and Listening to the Candle, it brings stunning, triumphant conclusion to a remarkable and sui generis poem. "There is nothing quite like these books," as the American Book Review remarked: "Scott's trilogy, only two-thirds completed as yet, is certain to be one of the most remarkable and challenging works of our rime." Scott's hypnotic epic poem concerns the political and the personal, and their darkly powerful relationships. With its riveting images, Poundian collage, tight three-line stanzas, and eerie, accumulated juxtapositions, Minding the Darkness fully hears out James Laughlin's opinion that "Not since Robert Duncan's Groundwork and before that William Carlos Williams Paterson, has New Directions published a long poem as important as Peter Dale Scott's."
