Book excerpt: Complaining that it has been too long since he has seen him; saying that his "...present wretched Condition...assures me I resemble Nothing in the world so much as a Widow'd Turtle my Case in Verse stands thus;" including a poem of twenty-two lines beginning "To every Joy Dear Friend, I bid adieu / When last my Tongue a Farewell gave to you / Wine, Women, Books I seek to ease my Pain / Alas, Wine, Women Books, are sought in vain" and concluding "But oh, that Tongue that very Tongue whose Power / May watchfull Demon's In to Sleep allure / May Argus' Hundred Eyes in Slumber Lay / and make Hell's dog it's Drowzy Law's obey;" continuing "These Lines few as they are may Convince you of my Desponding Condition tho I can't indeed help thinking that for me to attempt versifying in my Present melancholy Circumstances is altogether as extraordinary as the Emperor Adrian's Breathing out Rhimes in His Last Agonies, if you think I have not been Dull and tedious enough on this Head, I fancy I could with great Success compare myself to Ovid at Pontus; Dido deserted at Carthage &c; and say numerable other things of the Like nature which may be equally shinning and pertinent, How would I Dear Ford conclude my Letter, but to say truth I can't help Imagining it must seem very Absurd after having been so unmercifully tedious to subscribe myself your Freind & Servant at the Bottom, I'm sure were any one in the World to treat me thus inhumanly as much a Christian as I am my faith would scarce be extensive enough to believe him my Freind however he might assure me of it certainly I should rather consider Him as an Enemy to my Health & repose, how to Convince you in the Like Case of the same Important truth I really am at a Loss unless to make Use of Peter's Plain Argument in the Tale of a Tub and swearing by God that I am (or - as Sam Allyen(?) more emphatically and elegantly expresses it) the Dwell in Hell Fry my Soul and Body if I am not, me dear Ford's sincere Freind / Ant. Henley."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly essays on the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South Looking back at her lengthy career just four years before her death, modernist painter Nell Blaine said, "Art is central to my life. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation." The Virginia native's creative path began early, and, during the course of her life, she overcame significant barriers in her quest to make and even see art, including serious vision problems, polio, and paralysis. And then there was her gender. In 1957 Blaine was hailed by Life magazine as someone to watch, profiled alongside four other emerging painters whom the journalist praised "not as notable women artists but as notable artists who happen to be women." In Central to Their Lives, twenty-six noted art historians offer scholarly insight into the achievements of female artists working in and inspired by the American South. Spanning the decades between the late 1890s and early 1960s, this volume examines the complex challenges these artists faced in a traditionally conservative region during a period in which women's social, cultural, and political roles were being redefined and reinterpreted. The presentation—and its companion exhibition—features artists from all of the Southern states, including Dusti Bongé, Anne Goldthwaite, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Ida Kohlmeyer, Loïs Mailou Jones, Alma Thomas, and Helen Turner. These essays examine how the variables of historical gender norms, educational barriers, race, regionalism, sisterhood, suffrage, and modernism mitigated and motivated these women who were seeking expression on canvas or in clay. Whether working from studio space, in spare rooms at home, or on the world stage, these artists made remarkable contributions to the art world while fostering future generations of artists through instruction, incorporating new aesthetics into the fine arts, and challenging the status quo. Sylvia Yount, the Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, provides a foreword to the volume. Contributors: Sara C. Book Savage Fortune

Download or read book Savage Fortune written by Lyn Boothman and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2006 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The eighty-three documents presented here, varied in length and character, are not all concerned with Suffolk, but they are all connected with the eventful lives of Sir Thomas (later Viscount) Savage and his wife Elizabeth Savage (later Countress Rivers), who married in 1602 and whose homes included Melford Hall." "Thomas and Elizabeth both inherited considerable estates in Suffolk, Essex and Cheshire. Within a tight circle of aristocratic Catholics, they became prominent servants of the royal family during the reigns of James I and Charles I. After Thomas's death in 1635, Elizabeth remained an intimate of the queen, but her two houses of St. Osyth's and Melford Hall were sacked in 1642, and she remained chronically short of money up to her death in 1651." "The central document is a remarkable inventory of 1635-6, taken after Thomas died, listing the contents of Melford Hall in Suffolk, Rocksavage in Cheshire and a town house on Tower Hill in London."--BOOK JACKET.

Book A Very British Family

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a rule that no Trevelyan ever sucks up either to the press, or the chiefs, or the “right people”.The world has given us money enough to enable us to do what we think is right. We thank it for that and ask no more of it, but to be allowed to serve it.' G. M. Trevelyan The Trevelyans are unique in British social and political history: a family that for several generations dedicated themselves to the service and chronicling of their country, from the radical, reforming civil servant Charles Edward Trevelyan to the historian G. M. Trevelyan. Often eccentric, priggish, high-minded and utterly self-regarding, they have nonetheless left their mark on our past. This engaging history dispassionately explores the lives and achievements of this unique family and the part they played in shaping the history of Great Britain.
