Book excerpt: Breastfeeding. The mere mention of it has many mothers wracked with anxiety (how will I manage with work, other kids, what if I don't make enough milk?) or guilt about not doing it (will I be hurting my child if I choose not to breastfeed? what will people think of me if I choose not to?). This hot-button issue is one we've talked about repeatedly in the media and in celebrity culture. Remember when Angelina Jolie posed for the cover of W nursing her newborn? Oh, the controversy! And when Barbara Walters complained about the woman breastfeeding next to her on a plane? She was forced to issue a public apology. Or what about when supermodel Gisele Bunchen declared that there should be worldwide law that mothers be required to breastfeed their babies for the first six months of life? All hell broke loose. This topic gets people riled up, and there has never been a narrative account that explores the breastfeeding big picture for parents and their children in today's world. THE BIG LETDOWN by author, journalist, and breastfeeding advocate Kimberly Seals Allers will change that for the better and open up a candid conversation about the cultural, sociological, and economic forces that shape the breastfeeding culture and how it undermines women in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most widely accepted ways of describing an addiction is as a disease, but do we realize what we are saying when we describe it that way? Our current language and approach to addiction is not only lacking in depth but is keeping us blind to an amazing way that God is working in each and every one of us. What if our addictions are not broken parts of us that we have to get rid of, but invitations from God to new depth and transformation? When we are able to hold this experience gently and look at it anew, it reveals a new depth to how we can understand ourselves, our suffering, and God. For too long we have been trying to treat addiction like a disease, and tear it out by the root, but we are invited to something more in our humanity; something that we will never find if we continue to wish away our suffering. Author David Tremaine explores the possibilities of understanding addiction not as a diseased part of our humanity, but as a blessed part of our spiritual journey, and sheds new light on this deeply engrained experience of God.

Book Stephanie Stephanie Let Down Your Hair

Download or read book Stephanie Stephanie Let Down Your Hair written by Tess Marcin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2002-03-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can anyone really write a book, about self, that has a true beginning and a true end? I believe one can only write about a time span between the two. To encompass more than that must be left to someone else after one is gone. So one could call this book a series of essays, increments of time within the cycle of life. One could call it a series of experiments, of lessons, as well as of choices made. One could also call it a series of philosophical thoughts underscored by life. Living a life, living the life, one human individual no different than any other. Acting out life, re-acting to life, we all do it. Is one anymore or anyless than another's? It depends on the choices made. As the reader peruses a chapter here, a chapter there, the response could very well be, "Oh, I remember that!" "Oh, I've been there!" Etc., etc. There is a synchronicity in life it seems, and universal mind is part of it. Are we different? Yes, but ... Are we the same? Yes, but ... Reading the book and reliving memories is nostalgia in action. How far back can one go when one seeks to remember? Amazingly quite a way back. Can one remember every word spoken? No. The writers, who say they can remember such detailed conversations, have taken literary license with their work. Unless they were fortunate to have been able to record everything or to have been able to keep a daily journal in extreme detail. Reading about a conversation of some fifty, sixty years in such exact detail is suspect. It begins to border on fiction . So to create and recreate a life in progress it must be understood memories can be fickle. Never-the-less, however one manages to gather them together, they still make interesting reading. Yes a door was opened and what spilled forth revealed the life of one human being. The memories in the book do not quite cover a century, but they come pretty close. It was a period that seemed to take quantum leaps. We humans lived it, we ooed and aahed through all the events that took place on our watch. We were sad and we rejoiced. We even had that fleeting thought, "Will there be a tomorrow?" as we seemed to be living on the razors edge. There was, there is, there will be ... If we humans actually begin acting civilized, instead of pretending to be.

In fluent and graceful prose, the author has imagined the inner life of these young women and their families in rich historical detail, and has created a touching and inspiring story of the power of faith and love to transform lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2021, a sexual misconduct scandal struck the Canadian military, leading to a profound crisis in leadership. While some more recent allegations came to light before the #MeToo movement, these latest revelations have historical roots in the 1990s, an era known to service members as the “decade of darkness.” Due to drastic budget cuts and allegations of serious crimes perpetrated by its members, the last decade of the twentieth century was a tumultuous time for the Canadian Armed Forces. Amid this period, a human rights tribunal ordered the military to open its combat positions to women and reach full gender integration by 1999. Yet by 2021, women made up only 16.3 per cent of personnel; women and LGBTQ+ service members continue to face sexual harassment and abuse at all levels. In The Ones We Let Down Charlotte Duval-Lantoine looks at failed efforts to achieve gender parity during the 1990s. She reveals an organization unwilling and unable to change, and attitudes held by military leaders that fed a destructive dynamic and cost lives. As the military grapples with its failure to address cultural misconduct and change its culture, The Ones We Let Down reflects on whether the right lessons were learned from the decade of darkness.

Book excerpt: The ultimate modern-day breastfeeding guide, with empowering, medically sound advice and solutions for the trickiest issues—from a pioneering ENT doctor and breastfeeding expert. In today’s breastfeeding-friendly environment, the pressure to nurse is intense. We hear over and over that breastfeeding is natural, and every woman can do it. The truth is, the majority of moms need help breastfeeding, but they’re forced to sift through varying viewpoints from a dizzying host of sources instead of being able to turn to a doctor for advice. And when breastfeeding doesn’t work, they’re the ones getting blamed for failure. In Better Breastfeeding, you will find information, not opinions: science-backed facts to help you make informed decisions, without feeling ashamed or bullied. Dr. Linda Dahl presents a new paradigm for breastfeeding based on diagnosing and treating mothers and babies using anatomy and physiology, offering a comprehensive overview of how breastfeeding works, why it fails, and what to do about it. Dr. Dahl takes you through the basics of breastfeeding in a week-by-week guide and explores solutions for little-understood difficulties like gape restriction and tongue tie, nipple and breast pain, issues with milk supply, or abnormal nursing behaviors.
