Download or read book La Pinta written by B. V. Olguín and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking study based on archival research about Chicana and Chicano prisoners—known as Pintas and Pintos—as well as fresh interpretations of works by renowned Pinta and Pinto authors and activists, B. V. Olguín provides crucial insights into the central roles that incarceration and the incarcerated have played in the evolution of Chicana/o history, cultural paradigms, and oppositional political praxis. This is the first text on prisoners in general, and Chicana/o and Latina/o prisoners in particular, that provides a range of case studies from the nineteenth century to the present. Olguín places multiple approaches in dialogue through the pairing of representational figures in the history of Chicana/o incarceration with specific themes and topics. Case studies on the first nineteenth-century Chicana prisoner in San Quentin State Prison, Modesta Avila; renowned late-twentieth-century Chicano poets Raúl Salinas, Ricardo Sánchez, and Jimmy Santiago Baca; lesser-known Chicana pinta and author Judy Lucero; and infamous Chicano drug baron and social bandit Fred Gómez Carrasco are aligned with themes from popular culture such as prisoner tattoo art and handkerchief art, Hollywood Chicana/o gangxploitation and the prisoner film American Me, and prisoner education projects. Olguín provides a refreshing critical interrogation of Chicana/o subaltern agency, which too often is celebrated as unambiguously resistant and oppositional. As such, this study challenges long-held presumptions about Chicana/o cultures of resistance and proposes important explorations of the complex and contradictory relationship between Chicana/o agency and ideology.

Book Overcoming Cultural Mismatch

Download or read book Overcoming Cultural Mismatch written by Abigail L. Fuller and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students in U.S. public schools represent an array of cultural heritages. From students’ cultures emerge different ways of constructing knowledge, making sense of experiences, and learning (Gay, 2000). The majority of teachers, unlike their students, are white, mono-cultural females who lack experience with individuals of other cultures. Student diversity is increasing at a faster rate than teachers of color. As a result there is a cultural mismatch between students and teachers. This book introduces readers to cultural mismatch and culturally responsive teaching. Two mechanisms for activating change are presented in the “Framework for Overcoming Cultural Mismatch: Roles of Teachers and Administrators” and the “Inclusive Schools Action Plan.” Stirring up a sense of urgency in educators and then guiding school teams on planning and implementation, teachers and school leaders can commit now to equity for all students. In order to effectively teach all children – regardless of ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, religious, and other differences – practicing and pre-service teachers must be aware of the role a student’s cultural background plays in their readiness to learn and how they learn. In order to develop this awareness, teachers must reflect on his or her own cultural lens and how it informs teaching.

Book Culture and Cultures in Tourism

Download or read book Culture and Cultures in Tourism written by Andres Artal-Tur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourists engaging in cultural activities accounted for more than 500 million of international tourist numbers in 2017. City tourism relies on culture as a major product, providing benefits not only for interested visitors, but also for the local resident population. New trends in tourism include "experiential tourism", where the interactions between tourists and residents become a key part of the tourism experience and overall customer satisfaction. New technologies and IT applications allow tourists to design their own trip, given the presence of global companies like Trip Advisor, Booking.com and AirBnB. This comprehensive volume explores new trends in cultural tourism, demonstrating how and why culture has become a central factor in tourism. The authors analyse a wide range of relevant issues, including: how heritage-based and cultural tourism could contribute to the sustainability of destinations; the increase of religious travels to and within Arab countries; and how cultural tourism fosters understanding among people and cultures, and could even potentially help to consolidate peace at a regional level. The book also analyses interactions between hosts (the local residents) and guests (the cultural visitors), revisiting the pioneer hippy travelling experiences in Turkey of the 1960s and how they shaped youth culture. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of cultural tourism. The chapters were originally published in the journal Anatolia.

Book Enter Culture Exit Arts

Download or read book Enter Culture Exit Arts written by Semi Purhonen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key debates of contemporary cultural sociology – the rise of the ‘cultural omnivore’, the fate of classical ‘highbrow’ culture, the popularization, commercialization and globalization of culture – deal with temporal changes. Yet, systematic research about these processes is scarce due to the lack of suitable longitudinal data. This book explores these questions through the lens of a crucial institution of cultural mediation – the culture sections in quality European newspapers – from 1960 to 2010. Starting from the framework of cultural stratification and employing systematic content analysis both quantitative and qualitative of more than 13,000 newspaper articles, Enter Culture, Exit Arts? presents a synthetic yet empirically rich and detailed account of cultural transformation in Europe over the last five decades. It shows how classifications and hierarchies of culture have changed in course of the process towards increased cultural heterogeneity. Furthermore, it conceptualizes the key trends of rising popular culture and declining highbrow arts as two simultaneous processes: the one of legitimization of popular culture and the other of popularization of traditional legitimate culture, both important for the loosening of the boundary between ‘highbrow’ and ‘popular’. Through careful comparative analysis and illustrative snapshots into the specific socio-historical contexts in which the newspapers and their representations of culture are embedded – in Finland, France, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK – the book reveals the key patterns and diversity of European variations in the transformation of cultural hierarchies since the 1960s. The book is a collective endeavour of a large-scale international research project active between 2013 and 2018.

Book Think On These Things

Download or read book Think On These Things written by Stanley George and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-08-13 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When leaders use the public forum to speak and propagate their beliefs and thought processes, be it religious views or political thoughts, it is the responsibility of the listener to make an informed decision. Whether or not they act on the preaching is a decision that the audience makes, every individual in the audience, and the consequences of those decisions, good or bad, are to be borne in its entirety by that individual. They will need to use their God-given intelligence to discern right from wrong, moral from immoral, encouragement from tearing down, creation from destruction and choose life over death. The propagator, similarly, cannot be vindicated from the consequences of those actions. Just as they enjoy the applause and adulation of their audience, they should be mindful of the effects of a wrongful message and take responsibility for the same. Being aware of the fact that what they say and do is being watched by their audience, they should automatically restrain their words, actions, posts and even their very thought processes. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
