Book Let Me Survive

Download or read book Let Me Survive written by Louise Longo and published by Sheridan House, Inc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few tales of disaster at sea are able to convey the survivors' feelings of fear, hopelessness, and horror. This book is one of those successful few...the author, her husband, and their 5-year-old daughter were on a yacht cruise on the Bay of Biscay when they were struck by a storm. Fearing that the yacht was about to sink, the three took to the liferaft in mountainous seas. Less than a week later the husband died. Nine days later, the daughter died. Shortly afterwards, the author was rescued. But that wasn't the end of the story. The media circus took hold. There were insinuations that this may have been more than a straight disaster at sea, that the author may have been involved in-what?-an insurance scam? neglect? murder?

Book What Matters in Survival

Download or read book What Matters in Survival written by Douglas Ehring and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is about what matters in survival--about what relation to a future individual gives you a reason for prudential concern for that individual. For common sense there is such a relation and it is identity, but according to Parfit common sense is wrong in this respect. Identity is not what matters in survival. In What Matters in Survival, Douglas Ehring argues that this Parfitian thesis does not go far enough. The result is the highly radical view "Survival Nihilism," according to which nothing matters in survival. Although we generally have motivating reasons to have prudential concern, and perhaps even indirect normative reasons for such concerns there is no relation that gives you a basic, foundational normative reason for prudential concern. This view goes beyond what Parfit calls the Extreme View. It is the More Extreme View and is in effect something like an error theory about prudential reason as a special kind of normative reason.

He has one of the deepest and penetrating economical minds there is today. He knows the US and western Europe is doomed unless they privatize out of their welfare states. The welfare state has all but destroyed western civilization. The liberals and their welfare state have destroyed our culture and any capacity to barter as a last resort to survive. A lack of true survival struggle is the main causes of liberalism.

Book You re the Mecca I never want to visit

Download or read book You re the Mecca I never want to visit written by Soumyanetra and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did I ever meet You? The simple answer is No, I never wanted to. A simpler answer is Yes, millions of times, in the gravity of spaces, in the eternity of moments, in the vortex of storms, in mellow dusks, and in grains of sands… You are ‘now’ and ‘here’. And You are ‘never’ and ‘nowhere’. Here is a collection of poems from the deepest chasms of unfulfilled desires and solitary musings, that somehow make the unbearable bearable, with just a whiff of ecstasy at the border of dejection, just the hint of a dream at the edge of doom, just a sublime hope at the end of the subconscious sorrow. They unsettle and ruffle peace and are unending journeys within oneself. Let the catharsis begin. Let intricate turbulence be expressed. Let the journey itself be relished and imbibed. Let the heart transcend the commonplace and the expected into forbidden realms and uncharted territories. Let the zing simmer. Let the passion live!

Book Die Young with Me

Download or read book Die Young with Me written by Rob Rufus and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, this incredibly moving and harrowing true story of a teenager diagnosed with cancer is “a resounding affirmation of how music can lift one’s spirits beyond gray skies and bad news (Kirkus Reviews).” Punk’s not dead in rural West Virginia. In fact, it blares constantly from the basement of Rob and Nat Rufus—identical twin brothers with spiked hair, black leather jackets, and the most kick-ass record collection in Appalachia. To them, school (and pretty much everything else) sucks. But what can you expect when you’re the only punks in town? When the brothers start their own band, their lives begin to change: they meet friends, they attract girls, and they finally get invited to join a national tour and get out of their rat box little town. But their plans are cut short when Rob is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that has already progressed to Stage Four. Not only are his dreams of punk rock stardom completely shredded, there is a very real threat that this is one battle that can’t be won. While Rob suffers through nightmarish treatments and debilitating surgery, Nat continues on their band’s road to success alone. But as Rob’s life diverges from his brother’s, he learns to find strength within himself and through his music. Die Young with Me is a “raw, honest picture of the weirdness of growing up” (Marky Ramone) and the story of a brave teen’s battle with cancer and the many ways music helped him cope through his recovery.

Download or read book Unto Us Is Born written by J. Benton White and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time is 1931. The three places we first visit are Iowa, South Africa and Alabama. The characters finally end up as neighbors in Alabama and the story is about three young men whose growing up years were typical for that place and that era. What makes it different is that rather than be in a culture that accepted racial bias as a way of life these three young men simply did not accept the status quo. One of the young men was the son of the local minister who had originally come from the Midwest and moved to Birmingham when his father became a minister there. The second friend was a native South African and arrived in Birmingham when his mother who was a nanny accompanied a family which had immigrated to the South. The third, whose father had been an alcoholic causing his mother to divorce him and who was raising her two children alone. The boys met and eventually became close friends and classmates. Each family has a fascinating history in the own right but after the boys meet the story becomes more about them as a trio.. The boys became fast friends. The first two boys became star athletes and entered the University of Alabama on football scholarships. They all entered the University together, pledged the same fraternity and continued their lives together. In their early teen years the boys had become friends with some young Black men their own age living neirar them and that friendship has something to do with later developments in the story. That part of the story is intriguing. Each character has a story of their own but the story of the three helps explain who they were and what they became. It is reflective of the times more than some would want to remember. You will enjoy the journey into their lives and perhaps better understand the tensions of a society which had nor yet faced the dark side of its culture. It is truly reflective of those times in the South, times that in some places might still be trying to exist.

Book excerpt: he Culling In a solar system where The Authority decides who lives and who dies, only one of their own executioners can stop them. Glade Io is a trained killer. Marked at a young age as an individual with violent tendencies, she was taken from her family and groomed to be a Datapoint—a biotech-enabled analyst who carries out the Culling. She is designed to identify and destroy any potential humans that threaten the colonies: those marked as lawbreakers, unproductive or sick. But when she’s kidnapped by rogue colonists known as the Ferrymen, everything Glade thinks she knows about the colonies, and The Authority that runs them, collapses into doubt. Pulled between two opposing sides, and with her family’s lives hanging in the balance, Glade is unsure of who to trust—and time is running out. The Authority When everything she’s ever known is a lie, one young woman must make a choice that could change the course of history. Glade Io is torn between two worlds. She’s a trained killing machine—selected by the ruthless Authority to be a Datapoint, a tech-enabled agent of the state who eliminates threats to the human colonies throughout the solar system in the Culling. But her time among rogue colonists called the Ferrymen has convinced her that The Authority has far more sinister plans in store, and all the justifications they fed to her are lies. Vowing to help the rebels fight The Authority from the inside, Glade must sabotage a captured Ferryman ship that The Authority is planning to use to attack the Ferrymen stronghold. Though Glade is drawn to the brave leader of the Ferrymen, Kupier, she has older loyalties as well. Her friend and mentor Dahn Enceladus is charismatic and ambitious, but although Glade cares for him, she can no longer trust him. Her younger sisters are also in danger of facing Datapoint testing, and now she’s being forced into an upgrade she cannot refuse. But help is about to arrive in an unlikely form: a ghost from her distant past. The Ferrymen Torn in two directions, Glade must make one fateful choice—for herself, and the future of humanity. Glade Io is a rebel. Having fled with her younger sisters to live among the Ferrymen, she knows there is no going back now. She is committed to the cause of overthrowing the brutal Authority, and she trains her new comrades in the art of combating Datapoints like herself—those tasked with the Ferrymen’s destruction. Meanwhile Ferryman leader Kupier longs to travel the stars with Glade, free from constant war, but to do that he believes they must strike The Authority at its heart: the ancestral homeworld of Earth. Glade is hesitant; she hopes taking out the Datapoints living on the Station will be enough. But when the time comes, Glade faces the specter of killing her former friends in cold blood and her former mentor, Dahn Enceladus, tells her that The Authority has eyes and ears within the rebel stronghold. Now Glade faces a dilemma: sabotage The Authority from within, or return to fight alongside the Ferrymen, possibly putting her sisters’ lives in danger.

Book excerpt: "The End of Men is a fiercely intelligent page-turner, an eerily prescient novel, at once thoughtful and highly emotive." --Paula Hawkins, #1 internationally bestselling author of The Girl on the Train Set in a world where a virus stalks our male population, The End of Men is an electrifying and unforgettable debut from a remarkable new talent that asks: what would our world truly look like without men? Only men carry the virus. Only women can save us all. The year is 2025, and a mysterious virus has broken out in Scotland--a lethal illness that seems to affect only men. When Dr. Amanda MacLean reports this phenomenon, she is dismissed as hysterical. By the time her warning is heeded, it is too late. The virus becomes a global pandemic--and a political one. The victims are all men. The world becomes alien--a women's world. What follows is the immersive account of the women who have been left to deal with the virus's consequences, told through first-person narratives. Dr. MacLean; Catherine, a social historian determined to document the human stories behind the "male plague"; intelligence analyst Dawn, tasked with helping the government forge a new society; and Elizabeth, one of many scientists desperately working to develop a vaccine. Through these women and others, we see the uncountable ways the absence of men has changed society, from the personal--the loss of husbands and sons--to the political--the changes in the workforce, fertility, and the meaning of family. In The End of Men, Christina Sweeney-Baird turns the unimaginable into the unforgettable.
