Book The Codex of the Endangered Species Act

Download or read book The Codex of the Endangered Species Act written by Lowell E. Baier and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) is one of the most cherished and reviled laws ever passed. It mandates protection and preservation of all the nation’s species and biodiversity, whatever the cost. It has been a lightning rod for controversy and conflicts between industry/business and environmentalists. The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of this law, and provides an opportunity for a measured and thorough evaluation thereof. We cannot know today’s challenges and opportunities without understanding their histories. This book is the most comprehensive history of the ESA ever published, and the first to consider the entire history of the law from all angles in a single volume. The history of the ESA has been one of increasing impact, complexity, and controversy. In 1978, the Supreme Court declared that Congress intended for the U.S. government to save all species at any cost, and thereafter application of the ESA became steadily more controversial, as seen in the example of the northern spotted owl and the timber wars in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s and early 90s, and then everywhere as the ESA became a political football in the highly partisan environment of the late 1990s and amendments to the law ceased. This book is not only a history, but a call to action. It will take more conservation, more funding, and more innovative solutions if we are to save our wildlife and biodiversity. It will take the engagement to every American to muster the collective will to meet this challenge. The hope of this book is that we will be able to look back and say that we accomplished more in the second 50 years of the ESA than we did in the first.

Download or read book Keeping Faith with Nature written by Robert B. Keiter and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the twenty-first century dawns, public land policy is entering a new era. This timely book examines the historical, scientific, political, legal, and institutional developments that are changing management priorities and policies—developments that compel us to view the public lands as an integrated ecological entity and a key biodiversity stronghold. Once the background is set, each chapter opens with a specific natural resource controversy, ranging from the Pacific Northwest’s spotted owl imbroglio to the struggle over southern Utah’s Colorado Plateau country. Robert Keiter uses these case histories to analyze the ideas, forces, and institutions that are both fomenting and retarding change. Although Congress has the final say in how the public domain is managed, the public land agencies, federal courts, and western communities are each playing important roles in the transformation to an ecological management regime. At the same time, a newly emergent and homegrown collaborative process movement has given the public land constituencies a greater role in administering these lands. Arguing that we must integrate the new imperatives of ecosystem science with our devolutionary political tendencies, Keiter outlines a coherent new approach to natural resources policy.

Book The Earth on Trial

Download or read book The Earth on Trial written by Paul Stanton Kibel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth on Trial examines the degree to which the law has accommodated an increased understanding of the natural environment. Paul Stanton Kibel provides a clear assessment of what conceptual and practical changes are needed to reconcile law to the limits of ecology. By moving the debate between law and the environment beyond specialists, and towards a public forum, The Earth on Trial acknowledges that a healthy environmental future depends not so much on our ability to alter nature to accommodate society, as our ability to alter society to accommodate nature.
