Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Disaster Story: Things I Learned From Hurricane Katrina" tells stories (on a very personal level) of what people had to endure following Hurricane Katrina. Unless you've experienced a disaster you cannot begin to know about emergency survival and what to expect. As a Hurricane Betsy and Katrina survivor the author shares many perspectives on the aftermath of a major disaster. When almost every "system" in a city is destroyed almost overnight, emergency preparedness teams can be completely overwhelmed and inadequate. Here is some of what you'll learn: - Why no one expects a disaster to happen to them. - What you need to know in advance to stay in touch with family even when communications are down. How to return and have housing before most people. - What to expect immediately after a man made or natural disaster and for short and long-term recovery. The mistakes of Hurricane Katrina taught valuable lessons about disaster relief. Let's learn from "Disaster Story: Things I Learned From Hurricane Katrina" and avoid unnecessary suffering in future disasters. This book can help anyone who needs it now or future victims who need to understand the complexities of disaster survival, rescue and recovery.

Book excerpt: On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the Mid-Atlantic region. The devastation she would bring to the New York and New Jersey was widespread and unimaginable. Though warnings had been issued for days and many evacuated their homes and offices, thousands stood in the path of one of the strongest storms in the history of America. Winds on Long Island reached 90 mph. Large sections of Lower Manhattan flooded. Fire in Queens destroyed more than 100 buildings. In New Jersey, 2.6 million homes were without people and nearly 40 people were killed. A 50-foot piece of the Atlantic City Boardwalk washed away and half the city of Hoboken was under water. Hundreds of thousands were left without power and water, with dwindling food supplies. Amidst this devastation, Sandy inspired courage and hope in many New Yorkers, giving them the will to triumph against incalculable odds. Seeking shelter and the basic necessities of life, thousands continued to fight on to simply survive the harshest of conditions and help others do the same. These gripping moments of ruin and recovery are captured in "Sandy: A Story of Complete Devastation, Courage, and Recovery," which features award-winning stories and nearly 100 vivid full-color images from the "New York Post." A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated to the Mayor's Fund for New York City and Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

Book Helping Families and Communities Recover from Disaster

Download or read book Helping Families and Communities Recover from Disaster written by Ryan P. Kilmer and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2010 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall along the Central Gulf Coast region of the United States. The storm and its aftermath resulted in the most severe, damaging, and costly natural and unnatural disaster in the nation's history-as evidenced by the size of the region affected, the loss of life, the extensive destruction of property, and the thousands displaced. More than 2 years postdisaster, many families still lived in temporary housing and had limited access to basic services; in fact, many continue to struggle to meet basic needs. Furthermore, the mental health needs of many survivors remain largely unmet-and disproportionately so for marginalized, disenfranchised segments of the affected population. The magnitude of Hurricane Katrina and the associated shortcomings in disaster planning and relief interventions have provided mental health and social service professionals, as well as policymakers, with critical information for the improved handling of future disasters. The present volume examines key lessons learned and offers a blueprint for better meeting the needs of children, families, and communities postdisaster through well-timed, targeted responses and interventions. Broadly guided by a bioecological framework, it highlights significant issues in postdisaster work; considers the range of risks, resources, and factors related to postdisaster adaptation; emphasizes community-level provision of resources, services, and supports; and provides actionable recommendations and practical applications for future disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The editors' and contributors' experiences with children, caregivers, educators, and practitioners in Louisiana and Mississippi lend a compassionate perspective to the analysis of research and further underscore the significance of the recommendations put forth"--Jacket. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was almost November 2012 when Hurricane Sandy, a late arrival in an otherwise quiet tropical season, slammed into the Mid-Atlantic US coastline. Millions of residents were plunged into darkness and billions of dollars in property and infrastructure were flooded or washed away in surging waters. Blizzard conditions struck the Appalachians as the hybrid Halloween monster moved inland. Savage Sand and Surf: The Hurricane Sandy Disaster is multi-faceted examination into one of the most recent natural disasters in the United States. Scholars from multiple disciplines address a wide range of important aspects of this event, including unique meteorological and social impacts of Sandy, Sandy’s intersection with vulnerable social groups in society, and social institutions’ adaptations to the disaster. Also, different theoretical models of disasters are explored and applied to better understand and prepare for similar events in the future.

Book Disaster Citizenship

Download or read book Disaster Citizenship written by Jacob A.C. Remes and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, governments buoyed by Progressive Era–beliefs began to assume greater responsibility for protecting and rescuing citizens. Yet the aftermath of two disasters in the United States–Canada borderlands--the Salem Fire of 1914 and the Halifax Explosion of 1917--saw working class survivors instead turn to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members for succor and aid. Both official and unofficial responses, meanwhile, showed how the United States and Canada were linked by experts, workers, and money. In Disaster Citizenship, Jacob A. C. Remes draws on histories of the Salem and Halifax events to explore the institutions--both formal and informal--that ordinary people relied upon in times of crisis. He explores patterns and traditions of self-help, informal order, and solidarity and details how people adapted these traditions when necessary. Yet, as he shows, these methods--though often quick and effective--remained illegible to reformers. Indeed, soldiers, social workers, and reformers wielding extraordinary emergency powers challenged these grassroots practices to impose progressive "solutions" on what they wrongly imagined to be a fractured social landscape.

Book excerpt: The first complete moment-by-moment account of the largest Atlantic storm system ever recorded—a hurricane like no other The sky was lit by a full moon on October 29, 2012, but nobody on the eastern seaboard of the United States could see it. Everything had been consumed by cloud. The storm’s immensity caught the attention of scientists on the International Space Station. Even from there, it seemed almost limitless: 1.8 million square feet of tightly coiled bands so huge they filled the windows of the Station. It was the largest storm anyone had ever seen. Initially a tropical storm, Sandy had grown into a hybrid monster. It charged across open ocean, picking up strength with every step, baffling meteorologists and scientists, officials and emergency managers, even the traditional maritime wisdom of sailors and seamen: What exactly was this thing? By the time anyone decided, it was too late. And then the storm made landfall. Sandy was not just enormous, it was also unprecedented. As a result, the entire nation was left flat-footed. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration couldn’t issue reliable warnings; the Coast Guard didn’t know what to do. In Superstorm, journalist Kathryn Miles takes readers inside the maelstrom, detailing the stories of dedicated professionals at the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service. The characters include a forecaster who risked his job to sound the alarm in New Jersey, the crew of the ill-fated tall ship Bounty, Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Christie, and countless coastal residents whose homes—and lives—were torn apart and then left to wonder . . . When is the next superstorm coming?
