Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in the Speaking, and Writing of English, Vol. 1: Book One Language Lessons The study of English is of supreme importance to the people of the United States. With no other subject in the curriculum is the national well-being so intimately connected. The very existence of the republic depends in no small measure upon the possession and use of a language that carries the same meaning clearly and unequivocally to every citizen, of whatever race or traditions. This would be true even if language were merely an instrument of communication which left unchanged the mind and character of its user. But, as everyone knows, no language can be used habitually without modifying profoundly the forms of thought, the knowledge, the beliefs, the traditions, the ideals, and the character of anyone who uses it. The English language is therefore the most potent single force now transforming our heterogeneous population into a homogeneous and unified people. But this is not all. Language, not as an instrument of use, but as an object of study, is unsurpassed for the development of the thinking powers. True of all languages, this is especially true of English, the whole organization and meaning of which exercise the logical and rational faculties. Whatever may be the case with other languages, English cannot be studied as a purely formal discipline. The content is of greater importance than the form; and the content of language is as varied as human life and almost as educative. It is desirable, therefore, that English should be taught in our schools not only in such ways as will provide a uniform in strument of clear and exact communication, but also in such ways as will cultivate the power of clear and exact thinking, and establish noble ideals of life and character. Success in this arduous but inspiring task lies in the hands of the teachers of our common schools and of those who have the power to lighten or make heavy their task by providing or with holding the proper conditions and means of labor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother Tongue, Vol. 1: Lessons in Speaking, Reading and Writing English All these common things, if they could talk, might ask you a hundred questions about them selves. But to every question you would give the same answer: I do not know. Yet the com mon things are the most interesting, after all, and are best worth studying. One of the common things which serve you every day is the English language. You have used this language ever since you began to talk. You have spoken it everywhere - at home, at school, at play. You are constantly using it. It is your servant. Do you know what it does for you? How much do you know about it? Tell me this: Do all children speak the same language? No. You say in English, I'go to school. The German boy says, Ich gehe in die Schule. The French boy says, Je vais a l'ecole. You speak in the English language, the German boy in the German language, the French boy in the French language. Every language has names of its own for all common things. You often Speak of your house Were you French, you would say ma maison if you were German, you would say mein Haus instead. Book Writing and Rhetoric Book 1 Fable

Download or read book Writing and Rhetoric Book 1 Fable written by Fable Stu Ed and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Writing & Rhetoric series method employs fluent reading, careful listening, models for imitation, and progressive steps. It assumes that students learn the best by reading excellent, whole-story examples of litereature and by growing their skills through imitatiion. Each excercise is intended to impart a skill (or tool) that can be employed in all kids of writing and speaking. The excercises are arranged from simple to more complex. What's more, the exercises are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired preceding exercises. This series is a step-by-step apprenticeship in the art of writing and rhetoric. Fable, the first book in the Writing & Rhetoric series, teaches students the practice of close reading and comprehension, summarizing a story aloud and in writing, and amplification of a story through description and dialogue. Students learn how to identify different kinds of stories; determine the beginning, middle, and end of stories; recognize point of view; and see analogous situations, among other essential tools. The Writing & Rhetoric series recovers a proven method of teaching writing, using fables to teach beginning writers the craft of writing well.

Excerpt: ...compound sentence by the semicolon, unless they are very closely connected in thought; in that case use the comma. In analyzing a compound sentence, proceed in this way: I like oranges, but Bessie prefers grapefruit is a compound declarative sentence. I like oranges and Bessie prefers grapefruit are the coordinate clauses connected by but. Then analyze each clause as if it were a simple sentence. EXERCISE Tell which of the following sentences are simple and which are compound. Analyze each: 1. I borrowed Arabian Nights; and Lucy and I read it together. 2. The weather is cold and stormy. 3. Mother and I walked down to the river; there we found father waiting with a boat. 4. We danced and sang and had great fun; but some people found the evening stupid. 5. Double daffodils are handsome; but I like single ones best. 6. Who came to the door, and what did he want? 7. How the moon shone, and how the nightingales sang! 8. Which hat shall I choose, and which are you going to take? 9. Did you excuse me to Mrs. Jones, and did she understand the situation? 10. Some are born great; some achieve greatness; and some have greatness thrust upon them. 22 Compound Subject and Compound Predicate What is a simple sentence? Just as a compound sentence may be formed by combining a number of simple sentences, so each part of a simple sentence may be compound. We may use a compound subject, or a compound predicate, or both. As long, however, as these subjects or predicates are grouped together, and each group is treated as if it were only one subject, or only one predicate, the sentence remains a simple sentence. EXERCISE In the following sentences, name (1) all the compound subjects, (2) all the compound predicates. Which sentences have both subject and...
