Book Les secrets de sant et bien tre de Sainte Hildegarde de Bingen

Download or read book Les secrets de sant et bien tre de Sainte Hildegarde de Bingen written by Daniel Maurin and published by Éditions Jouvence. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Hildegard of Bingen

Download or read book Hildegard of Bingen written by Charles Burnett and published by Warburg Institute. This book was released on 1998 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a comprehensive view of Hildegard of Bingen's manifold achievements, her intellectual background and her reception in the later Middle Ages. It brings together, with full documentation, the contributions of an international group of medievalists, from diverse disciplines, to the colloquium held at the Warburg Institute on 17- 18 November 1995. Three of the essays are devoted to the cultural landscape in which Hildegard lived and worked - her relation to the writings of the Fathers, to the schools of her own time, and to the prophetic tradition. Two others examine how, after Hildegard's death, she came to be revered as saint and prophet, and two shed new light on the transmission of her manuscripts and of the illuminations that accompany her visions. Each of the remaining essays focuses on what is new and individual in aspects of Hildegard's astonishingly varied work: in her sacred music and poetry, her astronomy, botany and medicine, and in her unprecedented uses of allegory. The volume both pays tribute to the ninth centenary of Hildegard's birth (1098) and complements the first major study of Hildegard in our century - that of Hans Liebeschütz - which the Warburg Library, still in Hamburg, published in 1930. Contents - Peter Dronke - - The Allegorical World- Picture of Hildegard of Bingen: Revaluations and New Problems - Albert Derolez - - The Manuscript Tradition of Hildegard of Bingen's Writings: The State of the Problem - Madeline Caviness - - Hildegard as the Designer of the Illustrations to her Works - Charles Burnett - - Hildegard in England: A Note on Hildegard's Texts in the Library of the Austin Friars in York - Angela Carlevaris - - Ildegarda e la Patristica - Robert Murray - - Prophecy in Hildegard - Constant Mews - - Hildegard and the Schools - Charles Burnett - - Hildegard of Bingen and the Science of the Stars - Danielle Jacquart - - Hildegarde et la physiologie de son temps - Laurence Moulinier - - Abbesse et agronome: Hildegarde et le savoir botanique de son temps - Walter Berschin - - Eine Offiziendichtung in der Symphonia Hildegards von Bingen: Ursula und die Elftausend Jungfrauen (carm. 44) - John Stevens - - The Musical Individuality of Hildegard's Songs: A Liturgical Shadowland - Barbara Newman - - Three- Part Invention: The Vita S. Download or read book The Shortest Shadow written by Alenka Zupancic and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-09-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoring Nietzsche to a Nietzschean context—examining the definitive element that animates his work. What is it that makes Nietzsche Nietzsche? In The Shortest Shadow, Alenka Zupančič counters the currently fashionable appropriation of Nietzsche as a philosopher who was "ahead of his time" but whose time has finally come—the rather patronizing reduction of his often extraordinary statements to mere opinions that we can "share." Zupančič argues that the definitive Nietzschean quality is his very unfashionableness, his being out of the mainstream of his or any time. To restore Nietzsche to a context in which the thought "lives on its own credit," Zupančič examines two aspects of his philosophy. First, in "Nietzsche as Metapsychologist," she revisits the principal Nietzschean themes—his declaration of the death of God (which had a twofold meaning, "God is dead" and "Christianity survived the death of God"), the ascetic ideal, and nihilism—as ideas that are very much present in our hedonist postmodern condition. Then, in the second part of the book, she considers Nietzsche's figure of the Noon and its consequences for his notion of the truth. Nietzsche describes the Noon not as the moment when all shadows disappear but as the moment of "the shortest shadow"—not the unity of all things embraced by the sun, but the moment of splitting, when "one turns into two." Zupančič argues that this notion of the Two as the minimal and irreducible difference within the same animates all of Nietzsche's work, generating its permanent and inherent tension.

Download or read book The Pope s Body written by Agostino Paravicini-Bagliani and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the role traditionally fulfilled by secular rulers, the pope has been perceived as an individual person existing in a body subject to decay and death, yet at the same time a corporeal representation of Christ and the Church, eternity and salvation. Using an array of evidence from the eleventh through the fifteenth centuries, Agostino Paravicini- Bagliani addresses this paradox. He studies the rituals, metaphors, and images of the pope's body as they developed over time and shows how they resulted in the expectation that the pope's body be simultaneously physical and metaphorical. Also included is a particular emphasis on the thirteenth century when, during the pontificate of Boniface VIII (1294-1303), the papal court became the focus of medicine and the natural sciences as physicians devised ways to protect the pope's health and prolong his life. Masterfully translated from the Italian, this engaging history of the pope's body provides a new perspective for readers to understand the papacy, both historically and in our own time.

Book Hildegard s Healing Plants

Download or read book Hildegard s Healing Plants written by Hildegard Von Bingen and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2002-05-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval saint, mystic, healer, and visionary-Hildegard von Bingen has made a comeback. She is now popular in natural healing circles, in medieval and women's studies, and among those interested in investing the everyday with the spiritual. Hildegard's Healing Plants is a gift version and new translation of the 'Plant' section of Physica, Hildegard's classic work on health and healing. Hildegard comments on 230 plants and grains-most of which are still grown in home gardens and sold at local health food stores. In one of many entries on women's health, Hildegard writes, 'Also if a pregnant woman labors much in childbirth, let someone cook pleasant herbs, such as fennel and assurum, in water with fear and great moderation, squeeze out the water, and place them while they are warm around her thighs and back, tied gently with a piece of cloth, so that her pain and her closed womb is opened more pleasantly and easily.' Whether read for the sheer enjoyment of Hildegard's earthy, intelligent voice ("Let a man who has an overabundance of lust in his loins cook wild lettuce in water and pour it over himself in a sauna") or for her encyclopedic and often still relevant understanding of natural health, Hildegard's Healing Plants is a treasure for gardeners, natural healing enthusiasts, and Hildegard fans everywhere. Hildegard's Healing Plants includes 230 plants and grains-most of which are still grown in home gardens and sold at local health food stores.
