Book excerpt: This festschrift for Josephus D.M. Platenkamp brings some central concerns of anthropology into focus: social morphology, exchange, cosmology, history, and practical applications. Ranging across several disciplines and continents, but with a preference for Southeast Asia, the contributions look at a common approach that unites these diverse themes. In this view, the most constitutive relationships of society are based on exchange. Exchange and ritual articulate central values of a society, thus appearing as parts in relationship to a whole. These relationships encompass both human and non-human beings, the social and the cosmological domain. Thus, the study of these subject issues merges into a single project. Book Kinship Ecology and History

Download or read book Kinship Ecology and History written by Laurent Dousset and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of kinship plays a major role in social anthropology. However, the intellectual triumph of structuralism has transformed this analysis into an ivory tower and the methodological hegemony of functionalism inhibits any historical authority. Kinship, Ecology and History informs the reader of these old, yet long-lasting issues. By presenting new, original perspectives, this book reinvents the manner in which we can study kinship. It also examines ecology and history as a conjectural reflection, which make up the foundations on which human kinship can be reflected upon. Whether human kinship is understood in the form of systematics models or as articulated practices, it has to be conceived as a strategic means for modes of action and of transformation of life in society. The three case studies presented in this book give body to new issues. They deconstruct the existing models in order to re-establish kinship as a condition and consequence of social evolution.

Book Indigenising Anthropology with Guattari and Deleuze

Download or read book Indigenising Anthropology with Guattari and Deleuze written by Glowczewski Barbara Glowczewski and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays charts the intellectual trajectory of Barbara Glowczewski, an anthropologist who has worked with the Warlpiri people of Australia since 1979. She shows that the ways Aboriginal people actualise virtualities of their Dreaming space-time into collective networks of ritualised places resonate with Guattarian and Deleuzian concepts. Inspired by the art and struggles of different Indigenous people and other discriminated groups, especially women, Glowczewski draws on her own conversations with Guattari, and her debates with various scholars to deliver an innovative agenda for radical anthropology.

Book Area Based Management Tools and Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Area Based Management Tools and Marine Fisheries written by Serge Michel Garcia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of Area-Based Management Tools (ABMTs) used in fisheries or affecting their performance in relation to biodiversity and related socio-economic issues. The prologue provides historical, mystic, philosophical, political, economic, and ecological points of view of ocean space since antiquity. The book describes the modern background of ABMTs, their role in living in harmony with nature; their human dimensions; their governance; the tensions they face; the role of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and that of the United Nations and other global policy frameworks. ABMTs are described thusly: definition; human dimensions; goals and objectives; old and new roles; possible typologies; tensions; synergies and complementarities; trade-offs; and effectiveness and related factors. Pathways to reduce tensions, mobilize synergies, and increase effectiveness are described. The perspectives offered are illustrated by a few case studies including an industry view.
