It was two miles, the distance, but he would be with his dear Belvine at eight o'clock without fail. She would have dinner ready for him. It was ready now. After that they would go to walk on the Esplanade. Her fair face lighted up as his step sounded in the distance. It was for her trousseau, of course. That was necessary. Also Philippe had bought a new coat for the ceremony. It was the debt of both and both would pay it.
