A partir d'un corpus de données originales, cet ouvrage examine les différentes fonctions pragmatiques, interactionnclles et discursives des quotatifs afin de mettre au jour certains facteurs de distribution de ces marqueurs en discours. L'approche adoptée est à la fois polysystémique et pluri-théorique : la langue est un composé complexe, dans lequel plusieurs sous-systèmes interagissent pour participer à la construction de l'interaction. Afin de rendre compte de cette multiplicité, l'application combinée de plusieurs grilles d'analyse et de plusieurs approches théoriques est indispensable. Cet ouvrage s'inscrit également dans le cadre des études multimodales, qui considèrent la communication orale comme un élément composite dans lequel les variations prosodiques et gestuelles jouent un rôle aussi important que le verbal. L'ouvrage examine, qualitativement et quantitativement, les fonctions accomplies par les quotatifs en termes de représentation, de réitération d'événements antérieurs et de performance. Il propose également un tour d'horizon des diverses stratégies narratives attribuables aux quotatifs lorsqu'ils participent conjointement à la construction de séquences de dialogue dans les récits. Cet ouvrage défend l'idée qu'en définitive, ce n'est que par la combinaison de plusieurs systèmes d'analyse adaptés à diverses stratégies et à diverses modalités de communication qu'il est possible de réduire le nombre d'événements inexplicables dans les productions de la langue orale en interaction.

Book excerpt: Written forms of Arabic composed during the era of the Ottoman Empire present an immensely fruitful linguistic topic. Extant texts display a proximity to the vernacular that cannot be encountered in any other surviving historical Arabic material, and thus provide unprecedented access to Arabic language history. This rich material remains very little explored. Traditionally, scholarship on Arabic has focussed overwhelmingly on the literature of the various Golden Ages between the 8th and 13th centuries, whereas texts from the 15th century onwards have often been viewed as corrupted and not worthy of study. The lack of interest in Ottoman Arabic culture and literacy left these sources almost completely neglected in university courses. This volume is the first linguistic work to focus exclusively on varieties of Christian, Jewish and Muslim Arabic in the Ottoman Empire of the 15th to the 20th centuries, and present Ottoman Arabic material in a didactic and easily accessible way. Split into a Handbook and a Reader section, the book provides a historical introduction to Ottoman literacy, translation studies, vernacularisation processes, language policy and linguistic pluralism. The second part contains excerpts from more than forty sources, edited and translated by a diverse network of scholars. The material presented includes a large number of yet unedited texts, such as Christian Arabic letters from the Prize Paper collections, mercantile correspondence and notebooks found in the Library of Gotha, and Garshuni texts from archives of Syriac patriarchs.

Conventional expressions from everyday language are classified as dead, while much rarer novel or poetic metaphors are alive. In the 1980s, new theories on the cognitive processes involved with the use of metaphor challenged these assumptions, but with little empirical support. Drawing on the latest research in linguistics, semiotics, philosophy, and psychology, Cornelia Müller here unveils a new approach that refutes the rigid dead/alive dichotomy, offering in its place a more dynamic model: sleeping and waking. To build this model, Müller presents an overview of notions of metaphor from the classical period to the present; studies in detail how metaphors function in speech, text, gesture, and images; and examines the way mixed metaphors sometimes make sense and sometimes do not. This analysis leads her to conclude that metaphors may oscillate between various degrees of sleeping and waking as their status changes depending on context and intention. Bridging the gap between conceptual metaphor theory and more traditional linguistic theories, this book is a major advance for the field and will be vital to novices and initiates alike.
