Book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe

Download or read book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe written by Manfred Pohl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.

Book A History of Public Banking in Portugal in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Download or read book A History of Public Banking in Portugal in the 19th and 20th Centuries written by Pedro Lains and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of what became one of Portugal’s largest banks, the Caixa Geral de Depósitos. The bank was founded in 1876 by the state to run public deposits, and evolved into a savings bank, catering for both public and private deposits. Its history goes beyond the history of banking, as it ties in with the role of the state in the banking sector and financial markets. The book weaves in and out of different political and international contexts, following the many changes of the Portuguese political regime and of its interactions with the national and international economy. The most important lesson from the study is that publicly owned institutions can compete successfully with the private sector when they simultaneously cater for the interests of policy makers as well as those of the public, in this case, the depositors. The history of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos therefore shows how the state of a peripheral economy is capable of successfully managing a large financial institution when the right set of incentives is in place. This work will be a valuable resource for researchers and students of financial and economic history at both the advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It will also provide interesting insights for practitioners in the financial sector.

Book excerpt: "The history of a bank is more than a chronicle of money-making; it should be both a personal history of shareholders, manager and employees, and at a macroeconomic level, a history of the organizations at the centre of national and international growth and recession. This volume comprehensively demonstrates the significance of banking history and its relations with social, political and economic history." "A wide range of leading European banking historians provide comments and practical advice on technical problems of research and writing, and discuss critically a variety of approaches they and their peers have used in their work. They bring years of experience and unrivalled expertise to bear on the complete spectrum of banking organizations, from individual institutions to central banks, and the relations between banking systems across international boundaries." "At a time when monetary union is a major issue on economic and political agendas all over Europe this book provides a much needed supra-national perspective on the reasons for, and the best practice in, the writing of banking history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Conscripts and Deserters

Download or read book Conscripts and Deserters written by Alan I. Forrest and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the outbreak of war with Austria in 1792 and Napoleon's final debacle in 1814, France remained almost continously at war, recruiting in the process some two to three million frenchmen--a level of recruitment unknown to previous generations and widely resented as an attack on the liberties of rural communities. Forrest challenges the notion of a nation heroically rushing to arms by examining the massive rates of desertion and avoidance of service as well as their consequences on French society--on military campaigns and the morale of armies, on political opinion at home, on the social fabric of local villages, and on the Napoleonic dream of bringing about a coherent and centralized state.

  • Author : Erika Vause

Download or read book In the Red and in the Black written by Erika Vause and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most dishonorable act that can dishonor a man." Such is Félix Grandet’s unsparing view of bankruptcy, adding that even a highway robber—who at least "risks his own life in attacking you"—is worthier of respect. Indeed, the France of Balzac’s day was an unforgiving place for borrowers. Each year, thousands of debtors found themselves arrested for commercial debts. Those who wished to escape debt imprisonment through bankruptcy sacrificed their honor—losing, among other rights and privileges, the ability to vote, to serve on a jury, or even to enter the stock market. Arguing that French Revolutionary and Napoleonic legislation created a conception of commercial identity that tied together the debtor’s social, moral, and physical person, In the Red and in the Black examines the history of debt imprisonment and bankruptcy as a means of understanding the changing logic of commercial debt. Following the practical application of these laws throughout the early nineteenth century, Erika Vause traces how financial failure and fraud became legally disentangled. The idea of personhood established in the Revolution’s aftermath unraveled over the course of the century owing to a growing penal ideology that stressed the state’s virtual monopoly over incarceration and to investors’ desire to insure their financial risks. This meticulously researched study offers a novel conceptualization of how central "the economic" was to new understandings of self, state, and the market. Telling a story deeply resonant in our own age of ambivalence about the innocence of failures by financial institutions and large-scale speculators, Vause reveals how legal personalization and depersonalization of debt was essential for unleashing the latent forces of capitalism itself.
